With all the excited talk about zombies recently, it was with great interest that I made my way to the bakery attached to the Gangplank in Clockhaven this morning. I was told that the mistress of the bakery was away, and I might be able to examine the alleged zombie being held within.

I was lead into the back area, where I met a boy named Pip. He was happy enough to fetch the zombie for me, which he referred to as “Miss Dizelle”. I expected her to be in ropes, or in chains, but the lad brought her upstairs by the hand.
Whether she was walking dead still remained to be seen, but one look proved there was certainly something wrong with the woman. Her skin was ashen, and eaten away in several places. The boy Pip brought her up to a ledge, asked her to sit on it, and she did willingly enough, only to crumple over almost immediately. Pip was unconcerned, and returned to his table to nibble on biscuits. Clearly I was on my own. I took off my coat and hat, to get to work…

I moved closer to her, and said (feeling somewhat silly): “Miss Dizelle, would you mind sitting up for me?”
In actuality, I expected no response, and was quite willing to continue the examination in the position she was in, but to my surprise, she sat right up.

While it was obvious that she could respond to requests and commands, the towns folk appeared to be correct: she was completely void of vital signs. She registered no heartbeat, no reflexes, and when I placed my ear to her mouth and nose (the nose was missing) I could detect no trace of breath. The smell from her mouth was, however, exceedingly foul, and she was indeed missing all of her teeth for some inexplicable reason.
I sat down next to her, and she began to whimper somewhat. It was a disturbing sound, as her vocal chords had clearly deteriorated excessively. She was looking at me, though it was clear that her eyes no longer worked as a team, but quite independently; despite this, though, she was able to look me in the eye as she moaned, and was able to mostly follow my finger as I moved it back and forth in front of her face.
The more I worked with her, the more placid she seemed to become, and strangely she filled me with a sort of calm I hadn’t expected. Other than the odd moan or grunt, she was quite quiet and watched me with what seemed to be curiosity.

I find Miss Dizelle to indeed be clinically deceased, though clearly able to function in a manner that I am at the present time unable to explain. I would very much like to spend more time examining her to see what the limits of her mental faculties are, and how much she may be “domesticated”, for lack of a better word. She seems able of conscious thought, and it is my feeling that to destroy her in this condition would be against the Hippocratic Oath. I feel she is quite harmless.

It’s not my place to decide whether this operation should have been performed, I understand the need for scientific enquiry, however it brings up many ethical issues. Beyond that, if I find that “Miss Dizelle” is capable of independent thought, I will do my best to see that she is emancipated from you.

she doesn’t look like se kept well enough to still have much independant thought, her brain is probably rotted to slush

I would imagine that being dead for some months cannot be good for one’s mental state, either physiological or psychological, yes?

ugh!.. honestly, stepfather… i would say it concerns all of us, rather!.. it is quite impolite to unleash the living dead amongst ordinary folk! poor dizelle, she must be awfully confused by them.

Be careful doctor! I’m afraid my own encounter with the cured undead in Clockhaven did not go so well…
