Standing in the middle of my new flat I could not help but revel in the excitement of the past few days. I had finally done it! Escaped! The joy was just too impossible to ignore. I started clapping wildly, stamping my feet on the ground, turning in circles gazing at the empty walls, squealing with delight and finally throwing by head back to howl in triumph. I caught sight of the smog filled night and the glittering twinkle of stars through the skylight. Instantly I sobered, the grin leaving my face. I was not safe yet. Not by a long shot.
Almost a week has gone by since that fateful night. So far things have been quiet. There has been no sign of my enemies. It is too good to be true so therefore it isn’t. They are still out there and still looking. It seems the Dockmaster took my advice and hid away my airship while commencing repairs. So for the moment I have eluded capture or possibly death but for how long remains to be seen. I must remain on my toes, keep my wits about me and always be on the lookout for trouble. With luck, I hope to spot it before it happens. I dread to put my new friends at risk. I have come to love New Babbage and would love to make it my home… for as long as it’s safe.
It must’ve been fate that drew me to the Grand Ballroom that night. The residents of New Babbage had been celebrating… something about a Trainwreck. I ducked in meaning to hide in the shadows blending into the background but such was not to be. Despite my best efforts I was not able to slide the gaze off my person from this one man. Understandably, I was distraught but that is no excuse for failing. Mr. Melnik walked over to me and asked for a dance. To refuse him would bring attention to myself and I could not have that. Gracefully accepting his offer, he led me out on the dancefloor keeping us near the edge as if he sensed my plight. Meeting his gaze took my breath away. He was the most handsome man I had ever seen, his aura shining like a nimbus around him. I could not look away. The next thing I knew, hours had passed. Gasping with shock, I made a hasty departure thanking Mr. Melnik for the dance and his company but he would not let me leave until he extracted my promise to see him again. Against my better judgement I agreed wondering just what I had gotten myself in for. Never had a man so bewitched me that I lost all track and sense of time.
True to his word, a few days later he invited me to the build contest between Steelhead and New Babbage. It was absolutely fantastic. Never have I seen such artistry at work. Phenominal! Afterwords, he took me to see his shop in the port district where he introduced me to a couple resident neighbors. Out of the blue, surprising even myself, I inquired if there were any rental flats available. Turns out that the Mechanix Arms had a recent vacancy and was close to the shop. While he made arrangements to meet the owner, I gazed out over the water from his lab. Such a beautiful view. I fell in love with it at first sight. I think I am definately going to like it here. My enemies must never find me.
I even got to see the Mayor of New Babbage from a distance. He looked absolutely adorable in his white suit with oversized hat and white feathered plumes. I understand now that this is not his usual attire and that he made a bet with the residents that if a certain amount of wealth was amassed before midnight for RFL, he would wear that hated suit at the Clockwork Ball in a couple weeks. He seemed assured of his victory that he would get to burn the suit. However, thanks to the ingenious Miss Sky Neitizen who arranged a bustle burning and dance afterwards, the Grand Opening I believe, of the charming Mr. Mannonen’s new establishment, the goal was not only reached but exceeded. I love how the residents of this town pull together in times like this. It is heartwarming to see. Yes, I am really enjoying life in New Babbage. The people are so amazing.
Glancing around the flat once more with its faded wallpaper, worn carpets, clean spots on the walls where pictures once hung, I am ecstatic. Perhaps there is hope for me afterall. A new beginning perhaps. For the first time in a long while I am truly happy. I wish it could be like this forever. Oh, I know that nothing lasts forever, that all good things must come to an end eventually but as long as I can hold off the end from happening, I will be one happy cat. Bringing my hands to my mouth and kissing the fingers, spreading my arms wide, throwing my head back to stare out at the starry night, I cry, "New Babbage… I love you!"

smiles and blushes a bit Thank you for your kind words, Miss Ash. And welcome once again to New Babbage. As far as safety is concerned… yeah, maybe not quite the right word. But if anyone’s tracking you I’m sure they’ll run into the same dangers we all do. There’s nothing like hiding in a minefield…

blimy….. is everyone in New Babbage hiding from hords of dangerous enemies? guess the good thing is, if they all arrive at once, we can most likely get em all to fight each other an leave us alone…

Calling the Mayor "adoreable" might not be the best idea….
walks off giggling

You are quite correct Mr. Mayor. "Safe" is a subjective term usually pertaining to one’s sense of well being. No place is really safe… not when danger lurks everywhere just waiting to pounce upon the unwary and I’m sure Babbage is certainly not immune. Perhaps it would be more apt to say, that for me at least, Babbage is the lesser of two evils. Miss Harlequin, I’m afraid I can only speak for myself regarding hordes of dangerous enemies but perhaps that is the luire to New Babbage for some. To associate with a community of individuals that have been through similar experiences… or perhaps as Mr. Melnik suggests, "…hiding in a minefield…" I tend to agree with you Mr victor. While I do still consider the Mayor adorable, I think it is in my best interest to keep such notions private from now on… or I might meet a few of those afore mentioned dangers much sooner than expected.

Claps a hand over her mouth gasping, "Oh My! I am so sorry. I did not mean to offend. I am rather partial to my leg but if you must bite, please be gentle. If I see any red coats or hounds, you will be the first to know. Promise!"
