Wanted: Engine Composers for New Babbage Athenaeum

Posted by Aeolus Cleanslate on May 15, 2010 at 8:30pm

The New Babbage Athenaeum is seeking the IMMEDIATE services of experienced clackers and composers of instructions for analytical engines. Specialists in compound nibble-scanning, dual-rate spline calculations, and floating tri-rhythmic class reciprocation are especially desired. Those with specific knowledge of why an Engine might spontaneously begin to calculate the nature of pi when scanning the text in a book are especially desired. Bonuses will be paid and punchcards will be provided.

The Steamweaver Company denies that the Athenaeum Engine is functioning improperly, or that there will be any delay to the Project of converting the contents of the Athenaeum into punchcards.

((Hm, I wonder if Book has seen this ad? It looks for an excellent opportunity for a saboteur person with the requisite talents to find truly meaningful work.))

ummm….. by the way… what happens if someone put some more holes in those cards stored there? some of the patterns looked quite prity, but the one that almost looked like a horse needed another hole to be right…… and…. errrr…. were they in any order? still, the place downstairs is nice an warm to snooze in…

Bookworm, on a walk, sees the poster, pauses to read it, and walks on, a slight smile on her face.

"Emergency Assistance" is needed, yet all is well? That has the feel of barely contained panic.

(( Brilliant job on the poster, Mr. Cleanslate. ))

((I especially love the technobabble in the announcement. *grin*))

I can nibble on things…

points at sharp metal teeth

of course, I can’t be too precise.

Ah, if only I was skilled in such matters. My expertise lies solely with steam boilers and steam engines. Perhaps Professor Lionheart? He assisted me with a clockwork some time ago.

"Those with specific knowledge of why an Engine might spontaneously begin to calculate the nature of pi when scanning the text in a book…"

Hmmm. Were the books still under copyright?

(Just taking a wild guess here…)

((It’s DRM on the texts.))
