The Captain sat across from me, laying all of the goings on of New Babbage bare before me. From the experimentations of Marit Static & Cral Denimore, to the steeped political triangle brewing between New Babbage, Armada Breakaway, and Steelhead, to Ms. Hienrichs intentions to twart the efforts of Mr. Steamweaver, and beyond. Through his eyes, and the eyes of the others, there was no detail I could not see, no eventuality I could not prepare for, and, if need be, no situation I could not control.
We were nearing the end of this particualr report, and there was only one item left. I could feel it coming. The ensuing headache from my newest source of aggrivation. One I hold dear, and regard as a friend and stalwart ally. One who has taken, as of late, to distrust my kindness, and begrudge my aid.
“Subject: Zachary Somerset…”
The pangs were beginning already…
“The observed has been seen in the company of Commodore Jed Dagger. Mr. Somerset asked the Commodore to allow a private discussion, much to the displeasure of Lady Strathearn. Subject lead the Commodore to an open lot for a brief conversation, which, we must apologize, was hidden from our ears. Afterwards, the two parted company. Subject returned home, where it is believed he may have slept on a sofa in the living room.”
I interrupted, rubbing my temples, “No doubt he felt the need to expound upon my ‘dubious nature’ to the good Commodore. A word about this momentarily. Please continue.”
“Of course my Lord. Unrelated to our previous entry, Mr. Somerset has been instructing Ms. Hienrich in the use of Deryni mental shielding. This is a direct result of her spiritual troubles, not so long ago. We theorize that this is also partially responsible for her new sense of boldness.”
I leaned back in my chair and pondered this news. How timely this was. How timely indeed. Just when it is needed most, Zachary has found something new and engaging to occupy his time.
“Continue to observe these training sessions. And, if the opportunity arises, encourage them.”
The Captain nodded to me, closing his Watch Book, signaling that his report was at an end.
“Excellent, Captain. You are thorough and efficient as always,” I said. “Now, there is another matter that will require your attention. You of course know Ms. Verlia Bilvio?”
“Painter. Mother recently deceased. Father investigating. Of course, my Lord.”
“Very good. She’s been troubled lately. Nervous. Aggitated. And it appears that someone has beed searching her home. I want this matter investigated immediately.”
The Captain nodded to me, “I will make an assignment as soon as I am dismissed.”
“No, you will investigate. Personally,” I commanded.
“As you wish. However, if I may, is there any particular reason you don’t wish another to look into this matter?” the Captain inquired.
“There has been deficiency among us that I wish rectified. However, I do not think Ms. Bilvio’s situation can wait.”
“Deficiency, my Lord?”
I opened the drawer of the desk, and withdrew the package, handing it to the Captain. “Open it.”
He studied the package, then carefully opened it and examined the contents.
“I see. I will correct the matter straight away. Please forgive us, your Lordship,” the Captain said apologetically.
“Very good,” I said, rising from my seat. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, it seems that I have an appointment.”

Knowing in which room in one’s own home someone is sleeping…that’s just going too far! *glare*
((*laugh* Loved that! And the tags. Yes, Jed most definitely has skillz. *grin*))

glare I did not have to sleep on the sofa!
(It’s too short. I slept in the attic instead. *grumble*)

I think young Mr S can afford his own cot.

It seems that the Commodore is correct. He can afford a cot, pillow, and perhaps even a blanket.

What about pyjamas? *whistles innocently*

Don’t wear ’em, Book.

Well, then, you’d better be able to afford the blanket.

Indeed, young Zachary does sleep “commando” style. Although now that I think about it, someone should probably tell him that this doesn’t require that he be armed…

((*mischievous grin at Miss Hermit* A most formidable weapon indeed, Miss Hermit, though if you thought you saw knees in that picture, perhaps you should get your vision checked?
Not a gun, Commodore; a dagger. And it was originally on the nightstand. Sheesh!))
