Maggie carried an awkward bundle tight against her chest, hurrying through the streets of New Babbage and slowing only as she approached her destination.

“Evening, Miss Lynwood,” The guard said with a smile and a wink, pointing his rifle casually at her bundle “Just the usual in there, I hope.”

She clutched the bag tighter to her chest, then forced herself to relax, reached into the sack and produced a small bottle of ale, “Brought yer fav’rit, duckie. Hopen it won’t get ye in no trouble now, eh?”

He accepted it with a laugh, “Go on in, I expect he’s still asleep.”

Maggie eyed the lengthening shadows, “Ay, I ‘spect thas true.”

She passed into the room and took a seat on the little bench, eyeing the sleeping occupant of the cell for a moment. Then, tucking her bundle beneath her feet and extracting a rough-spun ball of blue wool and wooden needles, she began to knit a few more stitches into an elaborately knotted sweater, humming a song near forgotten and waiting for the sleeper to wake.

Sweaters aren’t for luck, Mr. Tenk, they’re for keeping safe what needs kept safe in rough weather. Protection, if you will.
