Young Cyan Rayna had been away for a bit trying to procure machinery for his Brewery and other things for his bar. Returning to Babbage was nice though. He forgot how hard it was being a kid in this world and really wished his managing partner would do his end of the work, but he hadn’t seen much of him since he’d been hired.
Cyan climbed into his tree and relaxed for a spell before noticing that there was something wrong. The air felt heavier than usual, almost as if it had an electrical charge to it. He’d known this city had many odd things in it. Magic, machinery, and mayhem seemed to be a usual occurrence here but this was quite different. Something dark was going on.
He jumped out of his tree and started to go on a little stroll, leading to the city hall. He looked up and the clock tower was off. It was way off. He’d heard that Mayor Tenk was imprisoned due to a little wager for the previous ball, but even then he’d thought that Tenk’s own clock wouldn’t be off by this much. Sure there were other clock towers in town, but this is the clockwinder’s own. It was the most precise clock in town and the most cared for.
Cyan fur stood on end.
After a brief chat with Lo and others last night in the newly opened Gangplank and the discovery that Mr. Underby was back in town, this was indeed a bad omen. Cyan decided there wasn’t much he could do here so went back to his home and climbed back into his tree.
He contemplated all the bad things that were going on in the city recently. The explosions, the ghosts, Mrs. Underby’s Bakery and the return of Mr. Underby, Tenk’s imprisonment, all these things just stood for trouble with a capital T.
With as much energy that was swirling around and as much on his mind it was odd that he found himself sleeping, even odder that he knew he was sleeping. He’d felt this way before though, only when he was at home when his parents were still alive. He was in his old home in Chicago. It was quite a big home as his parents had a lot of money. He was laying in his bed and decided he might as well check out why he was here. He pushed the covers aside and got out of bed. He looked at his reflection and noticed he was wearing one of his many pairs of school issued pajamas, which he never really cared for. He glanced around the room a bit, seeing everything as it was. A school desk in the corner for his school work, a toy chest filled with toys most of which he never really cared for, closet filled with his various school uniforms of all the schools that his parents forced him to go to, the immaculate floor with not a spot of toy or piece of clothing laying on it… just as he remembered. He didn’t know why he was here though as he never cared for this place and always dreamed of where he’d rather be.
He walked to his door and opened it.
Upon entering the hallway he noticed that there were strange lights almost as if a fire and an electrical storm were combined to make a light show. He also heard the sounds of chanting down below. Most be one of his parents many seances. He’d heard them before but never participated and hardly ever watched. Something about what his mother did seemed to really bring the spirits there though. During one of these he swore there was a little girl playing with his toys while he was in bed feigning sleep.
He didn’t know what drew him to do it but he descended the stairs into the study where the seances were typically held. He looked around and there was nothing. No sound, lights, nothing. He turned around about to go through the rest of the house when suddenly behind him he saw his mom.
He jumped back a bit when she said ” Hello my dear Cyan, what are you doing up?”
” I though I heard a nois…” He began to say but again realized he was in a dream ” Why am I here? I never dream of this place or you for that matter. What’s going on Mother?”
” I always knew you were a smart one dear. Must have got that from me, amoung other things. And why we are all here… Well you must have felt it child. There is energy outside, a dark energy, and with so much energy out there it feeds into other things.”
” But you’re dead, how can this energy be feeding into you?” Cyan said realizing her connections.
” Only my body is dead dear one, my spirit lives on.”
They both stood there silently for a moment just looking at each other.
” So you are saying you’re a ghost now? You’ve entered my dreams in order to do… what?”
” You are a brilliant one.” she said with a smile. ” I have entered your dreams in order for you to help me become whole once more.”
Cyan thought about this. He supposed it would be great to mother back, but at the same time she never really cared much for him while she was alive. In fact outside of being his mom he really didn’t know much more about her.
” This time will be different, you will see” she said as if reading his thoughts, well duh if she’s in his dreams she’s in his thoughts too.
” Why should I? I’m very happy with my situation here. I have friends and people who care for me.”
” But I can protect you?”
” From who?”
” Your father.”
Cyan stared at her with disbelief.
” But he was killed at the same time as you.”
” Your father… Let’s just say it’s not very easy to kill him. He looked dead, yes, but in reality he wasn’t.”
Cyan paused for a moment.
” I’ll have to think about it. Not like I don’t have enough things on my mind right now.” he said in response.
She just stood there looking at him for a second.
” I understand.” She finally replied as everything around him started to fade away ” Just don’t take too long in this.”
Cyan woke with a start still laying on his tree.
Definietly a bad omen.

Blimy Cyan, you do have interesting dreams… all i get is chasing rabbits, an the occasional being chased by a giant vole (but only after i ate something a little… older than it should be!)

Usually my dreams aren’t so… vivid, Tepic.

Hmmmm, a patient of mine in Steelhead has been having very vivid dreams lately. At first I thought they were merely down to trauma and stress, but now I’m not so sure – if there is something ‘in the air’, so to speak, then maybe like you he is receiving a message…

Could very well be. I think just the combination of the “ghost machine” and the energy swirling around doesn’t help here at least. If there are any kinds of disturbances like that in Steelhead maybe you should check it out. Or even ask Professor Heliotrope as he does do dream analysis.
