Giles S. Berithos, MD works as an unscrupulous physician and surgeon. His nationality and true origins are unknown, but he came to New Babbage fleeing scandal and prosecution. Although the doctor is quite skillful, a suspiciously large percentage of his patients succumb. Also, those patients that are indigent or without families often mysteriously disappear. Berithos is always willing to treat the poor and criminals “no questions asked.” This policy is based in profit, not altruism. Much has been said about the doctor’s unnatural eyes that seem to glow a sickly yellow and are hidden by spectacles of smoked glass. Berithos himself declines to comment at length on his appearance, saying only it is the result of experiments in his youth.
There have been rare instances when Berithos has shown a glimmer of compassion or good humour. However, he quickly lapses back into his misanthropic, morose state. His driving philosophy is that only evil men may thrive in such an evil world.
