MURDER MOST FOUL!
Citizens of New Babbage, a murder has been committed in Pennyfeather Park, located in Babbage Square. According to Wiggy Undertone of the New Babbage Militia, a suspect has already been identified and apprehended, Captain Undertone provided the following statement:
Earlier I was minding my own business when Gilhooly Skute runs up all out of breath and excited like. Young Mr. Skute was telling me about some sort of row between Skyler Gant and another older fellow. Just then up comes Skyler himself. Skyler was a horrible sight! He had blood on his clothes, and he was shaking so hard he could hardly talk. Skyler says “Come quick, I found someone who’s been hurt bad!”. Well, Gilhooly and I set off with Skyler, and he leads us straight to Pennyfeather Park. It was there that I saw who Skyler was going on about, only this guy was not hurt; he was dead! Skyler is trying to tell us that he didn’t have anything to do with the death. Being highly trained in the investigation of such things and whatnot, I secured the crime scene. While I was using yellow chalk to outline the position of the body, my keen investigative skills discovered a blood-stained brick that has to be the murder weapon. This whole affair is very sad, and I’ve had to take young Skyler into custody as he obviously killed that poor fellow.
[OOC] All citizens are encouraged to perform their own investigation!
Will you be the first to solve this Murder Mystery? Is Skyler truly the killer?
* Visit the scene of the crime!
* Question those involved!
* Make wild accusations!
* Check back frequently as more information will become available over the next few days.
As Mr. Holmes has been know to say, THE GAME IS AFOOT!

SOME NEW INFORMATION
The victim has been identified as William DeFaw of Caledon. Mr. DeFaw is an official of a Caledon orphanage, and it appears that Skyler was a tenant of the orphanage for some time. William DeFaw’s remains are with Doctor Rafael Fabre, and Doctor Fabre is in the process of performing an autopsy.
I hope to have statements from Skyler Gant and the witness, Gilhooly, within the next few days.

Anyway, I en’t Skyler’s fault! Let th’ poor boy go, he’s seen enough already!

Amidst my initial review of the crime scene I do have one question…
I do believe young Master Gant needs counsel before being questioned no?
*Reply by Ivniciix Wemyss on November 29, 2009 at 4:14am
Having visited the scene of the crime, I will add the following observations from which I have drawn no conclusions.
Firstly, there are two pairs of footprints in the snow leading North into the park from the street. Assuming these are not new since the crime was discovered, they would likely belong to Captain Undertone and Sklyer Gant who lead him to the unfortunate Mr. DeFaw.
There is also a third set of prints leading out of the museum, approaching the site of the crime and then leading off in a Northwesterly direction. This third set of prints ends abruptly at a manhole cover that is just beside the museum.
Thirdly, I noted another loose brick when at the site and also that there did not appear to be any buildings made of a similar material in the immediate vicinity.
Did some third party come from the museum, confront or otherwise meet the victim and then make his escape into the sewers? And where might one look to find a similar sort of brick and, for that matter, is the one I found at the scene similar to the supposed murder br…err..weapon…and was it there and overlooked earlier?
The only constructive course if action that currently occurs to me is to launch a search of the sewers in that vicinity assuming they are accessible and proper plans or a guide can be found.
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on November 29, 2009 at 12:46pm
Mr. Wemyss, I am impressed by your investigative skills! Based on your comments, I shall take samples from the soles of the shoes of young Skyler and the victim, William DaFew. I will publish these results shortly, perhaps in a separate post.
While I applaud your effort I do think in the end the evidence from the shoe prints will only confirm that which I have know from the moment Skyler came running up to me with the wild story of having ‘just found’ the injured man; Skyler is indeed the killer.
((In order to keep the number of footprints from being too confusing, Wiggy’s prints are not shown. The two sets of prints leading north are from Skyler and William DaFew.))
*Reply by Matthew Masingh on November 29, 2009 at 2:21pm
When I looked there were 3 prints, two going to and away from the scene, and the victim’s….going to the scene and stopping
*Reply by Ivniciix Wemyss on November 29, 2009 at 2:42pm
Sir…I would encourage you to look anew at the footprints while they are still fresh. I believe there are three distinct sole patterns from which it can be discerned that one pair comes out of the museum to where the body was found and then proceeds NW to a manhole cover and stops. I must conclude that someone other than the victim was in the vicinity of this crime when it occurred. I await Mr. Undertone’s examination of the soles of the shoes of all parties know to have been in the area, i.e. Mr. DeFaw, the two boys and, of course, his own.
*Reply by Matthew Masingh on November 29, 2009 at 3:14pm
EXACTLY! And as I noticed…young master Gil is still on crutches, so none of the three sets of footprints are his!

I have also visited the crime scene along with Matthew. He measure the chalk markings and the man seems to be around 7ft tall. I do not see how it would be possible for Skyler to have murdered the man in that manner. How is a small boy able to cause a blow to man’s head that is that much taller than him. I myself wonder if a brick may have fallen from an air boat passing over head. That just maybe it was just an accident and the poor man was standing in the wrong spot at the wrong time. I think someone should look into if there was indeed a air boat crossing that path with a load of bricks. I am very curious to see how this mystery unfolds.
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on November 29, 2009 at 12:38pm
My dear Miss Maven, I do appreciate your insight. It is quite true that William DeFaw is a tall man, but it is still entirely possible that he could have been struck by young Skyler. If Mr. DeFaw was bending down at the time, then such a blow would have been quite easy for Skyler to deliver.
The brick is one of several that are laying about the park, and such bricks are very common about New Babbage. I’m afraid that no airship dropped any bricks from the sky.
*Reply by Rafael Fabre on November 29, 2009 at 8:21am
Dear Mr. Undertone,
I have completed the results of the autopsy and the results are available for the authorities review. To assist in the investigation, please visit the old New Babbage Arsenal.

Oh yes. He is quite dead. You can see for yourself.
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on November 29, 2009 at 12:32pm
From the desk of Captain Undertone:
I want to thank Doctor Fabre for completeing the autopsy in record time. The autopsy findings are of public record, and are available at the New Babbage Arsenal.Based upon the autopsy report, I have to say the following:
Doctor Fabre concluded that the blood on Skyler’s shirt, and the blood on the brick, both match the blood type of the victim. Further, Doctor Fabre finds that the killing blow was indeed struck by the brick. I think this leaves no doubt that young Skyler is indeed the killer. It is a very sad turn of events to see one so young entangled in such a foul deed.
*Reply by Stargirl Macbain on November 29, 2009 at 12:53pm
You are wrong Mr Undertone! The real killer is walking our streets while you keep an innocent boy in custody!

Having read the coroners report, I note that a condition he calls “Petechial Hemorraghing” is present in the victim’s mouth. I must find a medical journal and discover the meaning and causes for this. Pehaps the library has such a tome….
*Reply by Tepic Harlequin on November 29, 2009 at 3:55pm
oh! that means he was killed by being strangled or smothered, not by being hit with the brick…. could Skyler have lobbed the brick, knocked im out, then someone dun im in after?
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on November 29, 2009 at 6:20pm
((Ah! My mistake! I should have deleted that phrase: “Petechial Hemorraghing” when I copied another autopsy to use as a template. Please ignore it, the victim was not strangled.))

No one has yet mentioned that there is a trail of footprints leading from the scene toward the City Hall. They are the same as one of the sets leading in from the south entrance.
Having examined the footprints, this is my working interpretation:
The victim (large sole) and someone else (small boot) enter from the south entrance. I am currently guessing these to be Mr. DeFaw (large sole) and Skyler Gant, as the second set of footprints is considerably smaller than those of Mr. DeFaw. This guess will, of course, need to be confirmed or denied by Captain Undertone’s examination of their footwear.
These two reach the north end, where a scuffle of some sort occurs. Skyler begins leaving the scene, heading back toward the south. My guess is at that point, the unknown party (small sole) enters from the north and arrives at the scene of the scuffle. Skyler turns back, and the unknown party runs away, entering the sewer outside the northwest corner of the park. Skyler then runs toward the west, exiting next to City Hall.
((*sees Skyler’s posted his statement, and reads it*))
Well, my interpretation, in so far as it goes, fits with Skyler’s statement. No matter what, we do need to find this unknown party, to learn what he or she knows.

Oh, dear, dear, dear.
After examaning the scene of the crime, I went first to get the autopsy notes, then headed to the militia headquarters to interview Skyler. When I got there, though, I found that he had somehow gotten hold of an explosive, blew a hole in the wall, and escaped!
I know this doesn’t look good, but I’m still much more inclined to believe him innocent of murder. I just hope I can find him, and convince him that this is not the way to handle this situation.
*Reply by Bookworm Hienrichs on November 29, 2009 at 5:39pm
After some thought, I figured that it was most likely that Skyler would go into the sewers to escape notice. So, I went into the courtyard behind Mr. Holmes’s house, as I knew of an easy way in there. Sure enough, it wasn’t long before I heard his voice echoing down a corridor, and found him and Mr. Sixpence talking. I told Skyler that I believed in his innocence, and tried to convince him to return with me, as running just makes him look more guilty. Unfortunately, I didn’t succeed, and he ran away and disappeared into the sewer system.
(*carefully makes no mention of Mr. Sixpence’s role in helping Skyler run from her, even as she coughs out the last of the smoke from his smokescreen*)
I returned to Pennyfeather Park with my photographic equipment to take pictures of the footprints while there was still light. It is my firm conviction that we must find the owner of the third set of footprints–the one pictured here. Only then can we know the entire truth.
*Reply by Tepic Harlequin on November 30, 2009 at 3:10am
e’s escaped? No wonder we couldn’t find him yesterday…. but…. if Skyler blew the wall, why’s there bricks on the inside? Seen enough stuff blow up in New Babbage (bloomin inventors!) to know the bricks end up outside! Maybe whoever did the bloke in helped Skyler escape to make him look guilty? e’d be scared enough to run, given the chance, an i don’t blame him!
Tepic carefully smooths out the diagrams of his own plans for springing Skyler from the snowy bank
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on November 30, 2009 at 6:26pm
Yes, indeed Skyler has escaped. While there are a few bricks inside the cell, there are dozens outside. Indeed, I fear bricks hurtled off in all directions, as some have been found 50 feet from the jail cell wall!
Skyler’s actions are understandable of someone who is guilty of murder. I’m just glad I was able to take a cast of his boot soles before he made his escape.
*Reply by Skyler ‘Artful Dodger’ Gant on November 29, 2009 at 4:58pm
The boy obviously had reason to kill that human. I say, congratulations to the new human hating Gant… and… he needs someplace safe to hide if he is indeed innocent.

Thinks about how clever Skyler is for killing the human that hurt him, and then escaping from that jail as he swims off
*Reply by Wallis Graves on November 30, 2009 at 8:10am
There are three distinct sets of prints. One print, with a solid heal and a club motif, I take to be the victim’s. Both these and a second set of prints enter the park from the south. The second set of prints has a distinctive ridged heel pattern to them.
In front of the crypt (the TARDIS exterior) there appears to be some sort of a scuffle between the victim and the own of the second set of shoes. At one point the ridged heel prints leave the scuffle spot and walk away, only to to return before exiting the park in the direction of the Town Hall.
A third set of shoes without heel, and bearing some sort of woven sole, runs from the Palaeozoic Museum, then to the body and exits the park towards the manhole cover.
The blood stained brick in question seems to match the pile of horsehead bricks available within the Town Hall as part of building materials available to residents of the City.
Until the identity of the owner of the third set of footprints is discovered then the possibility remains that young Skyler is telling the truth.

i worked it out… it was the squirrels in the park. Everyone knows squirrels pelt people under their trees with nuts an stuff, the bloke was standing almost under a tree, and there were bricks everywhere around the park. So the squirrels musta just got board of using nuts which everyone ignored, an gone onto bricks to get some attention. So they slung a brick at the bloke, knocked him off, an that explains why no other footprints!

Through investigation I have unraveled this mystery. Skyler Gant is innocent of this crime.
The third set of footprints are small enough to fit that of an urchin. The killer is clever and cold blooded enough to allow master Gant to take the wrap and even to help him to escape prison so that everyone would believe that he is guilty. Such a person who enjoys going to museums and sits amongst us creating a smokescreen to put us off their scent. upon questioning master Tepic it became obvious that he was hiding something, his argument about squirrels commiting the offence of murder is ludricrous and is designed to add more smoke to cover his dasterdly deeds. I demand that the authorities sieze Master Tepic Harlequin and check his bootprint against those of the third set of prints.

I am unclear just where the investigation stands at this time and hesitate to inject some information that may be entirely unrelated however…whilst investigating the sewers yesterday, I came upon the lad Sam Emintrood engaged in a similar activity. Together, we followed the sewers east and eventually found they came to a series of larger rooms that appeared to even provide a dock. There were several doors leading out of this are as well as a small opening leading to an open pool of water, several gangways, a couple of doors and what, at first glance, appeared to be a dead end passage.
Just outside, and also within, this passage are what appear to be blood stains on the walls. More interestingly, what appeared to be the closed end of this tunnel was, in fact, a secret sliding door which, when opened, leads into the end of the street east of the Gangplank Tavern. Here, there are more of what appear to be blood stains.
At this point I lost track of the urchin Elmintrood as we went searching in separate directions. However, before we parted, he commented to me that one of the other doors we had searched previously lead into a building he told me was once an orphanage. While it seemed mostly unocupied now, some of the passages we followed did lead to some interesting places including the backs of shops and some rooms that appear to have been recently populated though sparsely furnished.
Should any of this information be deemed useful to the authorities in the current investigation – or warrant one of it’s own – I am at their disposal.

Need I remind all that Jimmy shot and killed a man not too long ago. Though he was defending Finley, who was being attacked by the man. Dead is dead. It does not matter if one killed in self defense, they still had the capacity and inclination to kill. Sorry to dredge up old memories Jim, I was just using you to illustrate my point.
Wiggy, perhaps if the victim were somebody of decent standing that was a real loss to the community and not a right rotter, more effort would be expended as well. I mean, wasn’t this the fellow that was full of hate and abuse towards many? Or do I have my stories crossed here?
Being from a crew of pirat… erm.. privateers, yes, that is it, privateers, there is a common ideology that “some folks just need killing” as it were. I mean, I don’t remember anybody wanting or feeling the need to “save” Mr. Moriarty.. they just wanted him dead.
The crime scene being all but gone now (realistically)and evidence being filed away (that’s what happens to cold cases) is there some place that houses all of the accrued information and evidence in one common place so that would be investigators could take a look? ((perhaps a “file” of ordered notecards in world?))
*Reply by Wiggy Undertone on January 26, 2010 at 2:07pm
Dr. Dayafter, you are correct. The victim in this case has been implicated in abuse and murder. These crimes were committed at an orphanage in Caledon, and the victim was a person of influence at that orphanage. I assure you that considerable effort has been expended on this matter, but without any new leads I see no reason to continue active investigation.
As far as a common repository of information, I really have been meaning to organize my files. The Wiggyfish Cannery operation has been demanding most of my time lately. ((Maybe we could use the wiki for this?))
