Weird Conveyances

While looking for images for a pub sign I stumbled across one called the Hen & Chickens.

However instead of the expected feather image, I was shown a man on a rather odd looking bike. Further searching revealed the Pentacycle, nicknamed the Hen & Chickens, was actually in use by the British Post Office around Horsham in the late 1800s.

Surviving examples still exist in the Blist Hills Museum, part of the Iron Gorge heritage site.

At least you wouldn’t need to worry about balancing :-)

I’d never heard of a Pentacycle before.  Thank you.

The spectacular facial hair on these uniformed gentlemen should not pass without comment. Having said that, you may very well have inspired a session on the Oakwood Labs build platform.

My father wasn’t kidding… there is still quite a bit of refinement to come, but general form and function are complete. Our thanks to Mr. Pearse for the inspiration!
