((may contain spoilers..))

dear diary,

since i have returned, new babbage is rather busy indeed!.. i was chatting with kane about rather a lot of important things, and then he said something about the beast lurking in the shadows trying to eat urchins, how perfectly frightful!…

especially how folk are saying the beast may have been born from quite an ordinary lady, really, when some sort of procedure went terribly wrong, and perhaps it is now invulnerable and no-one knows how to stop it devouring innocent people!  and i said to kane, well, if it is only a baby monster, perhaps it may be missing its mother an awful lot? for it may need comforting terribly! and be rather hungry too…

and kane thought that was rather a special idea… and he tried to think of someone especially motherly in babbage, and i was rather rude about my own mother phaedra i’m afraid, and then he said perhaps miss eugenia lamplight may be best to try, first?

and so then i ran to the post and aetheric telegraph office rather quickly and paid the smartly uniformed old operator with a little pocket money i hadn’t spent on cake, and asked him politely if he could please send a telegram to miss eugenia lamplight as follows…

dear miss eugenia lamplight, stop.  monster requires motherly care and attention, stop.
if you have a spare moment or two to comfort an urchin-devouring beast then that would be marvellous for it may in fact save babbage and… (message ends)”  …for then i ran out of tuppences, rather… i do hope miss lamplight doesn’t mind

Like my namesake, I’m a master musician… I could lull it to sleep with the lovely dulcitones of my didgeridoo…

      o, that would be marvellous!
for then perhaps it may dream of wide open spaces?.. and then it may drift away, to explore new lands?..
