Because I’ve been missing tabletop RPGs for years now, I have decided to attempt to run something akin to it here in SL. This will be something of a stumbling experiment to find out what works and what doesn’t, but I welcome your input, comments, and participation!
This will occur on Wednesday evenings, 7pm SL time.
The players will likely sit about at the observatory, and role play via chat, no dressing up required. :)
Mechanics will be minimal, focus will be on storytelling. *General* inspiration and setting will be coming from the Castle Falkenstein RPG. No knowlege of the mechanics or setting of the RPG is needed to participate.
Interested? Read on. Otherwise, now’s your chance to run. :P
Setting: Steampunk, 1870s-1890s. Very Babbage-ish. The Fey exist, but due to an agreement known as the Compact, they generally avoid crossing the “Veil”, the border between the faerie lands and the mundane world. The exception is dwarves, who are not exactly common, but live in the mundane world. Magic exists, but is not fast, and not reliable.
There will be a set of character archetypes that will be fleshed out by the players who take them up.
1: Bavarian Calvaryman – action character: Swords and horses
2: Bavarian Student Magician – knowledge character: Magic and general knowledge
3: Texan Secret Agent – action character: Guns and wilderness
4: Dwarf Watchmaker – knowledge character: Mechanics and Fey
5: Bavarian Princess – social character: Contacts and Money
Ideally, we’d have the same people playing the same characters every week, but that’s likely to be impossible, so there will be the need for alternates to turn up and take an empty seat. There will be a summary posted after each session, or at least a transcript if nothing else, in hopes of keeping alternates up-to-date.
Interested? Drop me a notecard in world. Put “Falkenstein” in the title, so I can find it. Or post to this thread.
I am definitely looking forward to this.
BTW, for those of you who will be involved I am playing the Bavarian Cavalryman. :)
And under Satu, his younger brother the bavarian student magician.
Unless, of course, someone convinces me they can do a better job of it. :)
I totally want in on this. I also wanna call dibs on the magician if nobody else has!
At least I think I want to play the magician. Gonna read up on how magic works in this some more. Just to get an idea of the in-world mechanics of it, not necessarily the game mechanics (though knowing those couldn’t hurt either).
EDIT: Oh man there are so many ways for a spell to go devastatingly wrong and wildly out of control. Thats the best kind of magic!
i know, right? its so much more fun when it doesn’t work.
Bavarian Princess :) [ponders already on all kinds of decadence to annoy with .. laced with fluff thoughts]
Mrs. Fabre, you were born to play that role.
looks up and grins :) why thank you Sir !
Texas Secret Agent
Jedburgh Dagger, Texas Ranger has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? At the very least it ought to be a weekly serial at the movie palace. ;)
(I’m going to die for that one, aren’t I?)
Is there room for more than one Texian? Third Sergeant Underwood might be most interested, or innerested as he would say, in such a thing…
There are all sorts of possibilities. The cast list is more of a general guideline.
I would like to be the Dwarf Watchmaker, but have doubts my work schedule will make it possible.
I used to play a Bavarian Secret Service agent many years ago. Based on a slightly more moral version of Adrian Becker from the Karl Edward Wagnar short stories. Also did a PBM version online with a group that went to the moon.
I’d be interested in joining (CF is a personal favourite) although overlap with Riel Theatre on a Thursday may prove a problem?
I’d be all for it, but Thurday evening’s are usually my Malifaux nights
Alrighty, well, I’m not averse to switching nights, if it works out for more people. For those of you who are interested, what evenings other than Friday or Sunday, would work for you?
how about wednesday ?
I could play any night except Monday and Wednesday. Laaate classes those days, so I won’t be home.
I’d love to play and I’ll happily act as someone’s alternate who can’t play some days :)
how about tuesdays then?
tuesdays seem lovely :)
My friends,
Due to RL issues beyond my control I must withdraw from this endeavour before it has even begun.
Apologies all,
C. Osterham
Actually, if I had been thinking at the start, I would have ruled out Tuesdays myself, as that’s my ukulele class night. Looks like we’re back to Thursdays as being the least inconvenient.
Well, scheduling conflicts of all sorts abound. So, I bit the bullet and made a decision. Sorry if this doesn’t work for anyone of the people interested, but it’s settled on…
Wednesdays, 7pm SLT
The primary for the role of the Texan Secret Agent will be: Jedburgh Dagger
The primary for the role of the Young Prince (no longer princess): Pilipo Underwood
More news as it occurs!
Wednesdays will work for me.
My job (Night shift) is rearranging hours so in 2 weeks my Wednesdays will be free and clear.
Until then I could game from 7PM until 9PM.
I can try to make it on Wednesdays, if just to listen to the story. I love RPing, but I’d hate to leave someone else with the burden of a character if I started it,lol I would try my dang hardest to make it to play though.
Plenty of room, Maddox!
Well, despite the nice long thread here, it looks like this might just be a no-go, only two people showed up at the first meeting, lots of complaints about it being on Thursdays, so I switched it to Wednesdays….
And, only one person turned up this time. But, I’ll give it one more week.
Sorry about that, I’ve been arguing with my ISP over connection problems today. My modem has dropped 6 times in the last hour. And when it does connect I’m getting a whole 0.4Mbps download speed. Not happy.
i feel your pain.
*thinks people who complained about it being on a thurdsay but then didnt show up are big dumbfaces*
My apoligies. With RL job situation in flux I will not be able to play. Right now if I am offered hours I jump at it.
