Response to Spring Town Hall

As I wasn’t at the meeting (since I didn’t know about it until it was too late), you get to put up with me rambling here. Consider it your punishment, Tenk.

First of all, I keep hearing about plans for what to do with the “Welcome Center (Coming Soon)” spot – aka Kaylee’s old build. Considering that I own that spot, it would be nice if folks actually talked to me directly about it, instead of me hearing things second- or third-hand. I do actually have a vision for it, which I’ve not yet had the time – or the skills – to do.

I see it as a welcome center for those who are seeing the city for the first time. To me, that means one thing: KISS. Keep It Simple… erm… Siblings. Yeah. Most casual visitors aren’t interested in wading through pages of information; they’re looking for the basics. I think we could give that to them quite easily.

This is what I was thinking could go in it:

Poster – New Babbage: The TL;DR version
Pithy list of the basics of the city (see comment below for what I thought to put in it)
Put in sections underneath to click for detailed notecards (covenant, real estate, building rules)

City map
Like real estate map, but showing ‘You are here’ tag, as well as tags (and SLURLs) of notable builds – City Hall, Piermont Landing, Brunel Hall, Clarendon, Burton Library, AEther Salon, various museums – what else?

Events Calendar (Google calendar on a prim, if I can figure out how to do that)

Freebies – Clothing, calendar, tourist t-shirt, engineer’s caps, welcome kit, etc.

Few choice pictures

Group inviter

Caledon Oxbridge classes?

On/off-line indicators for estate managers? Or at least list of names?

The whole RP Welcome Center thing… I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad idea, but it’s more for someone who’s already interested in the city, not those who are casually visiting. And frankly, I think the Burton Library would be the logical place for it, if Ms. Puchkina agreed to it.

Spread the love

Poster – New Babbage: the TL;DR version

    1) Steampunk city
    2) City of builders and writers
    3) Role-playing optional, but occurs fairly often
    4) Clothing mandatory. Victorian/Steampunk clothing optional. Free clothing available [insert where]
    5) Main webpage: cityofnewbabbage.com
    6) Wiki site: cityofnewbabbage.com/records

(What else could be added? But not too much – remember, we don’t want to make this too long.)

personally, I loathe most rp sim entrance areas, I just want to get on with it and see the sights. BUT, for folks coming for heavier rp, they want to see that stuff so they can get on with it without the stumbling around that leads to all the yelling and screaming that ends up with me getting stompy.

the tram terminal next door seems to be the next logical stop from your wharf. the boarding house mock ups could be converted into a functional building too for a more detailed walk-thru?

Did the model Tesla tower arrive in one piece? I do not really trust those delivery drivers!

excellent feedback. I was considering putting a lot if it into the tram terminal next door. would links to the museums and libraries be good for the KISS format? it is your land, I would like to see you take the lead on the organization.

and I have no idea why my event posting wouldn’t stick. I tried more than once. let’s blame the winter storm.

Links would certainly be good!  Have something that says If you want to learn more about… various subjects, go here.

And if you have problems with posting an event again, send the info to me.  So far, I’ve been able to post them just fine, and I’d gladly do one for you.

I’ll be honest ( amazing as that sounds from me) but the one thing that has most turned me off of  RP sims, aside from the all to often no furries rule,is to arive at the landing point and be inundated with a wave of rules, especially if all im doing is visiting,

so yes i agree with Hienrichs (again amazing) on the KISS idea but what may be needed is a rules of conduct notice,

things like enjoy the builds but please don’t enter private property

,as a visitor you may see people RPing please do not get involved unless invited ( a group of three day old players jumping into a well planned RP and shooting people with their brand new scifi weapons because it looks like fun is understandably disruptive)

pretty much look around have fun but respect the locals,

ive been an Admin on my home sim of Amaranth for a couple years and aside from griefers the most issues we have is people who just don’t know how to act on sim,

so we get the trespassers having sex in some ones house, or unpacking boxes on someones lawn all the new player stuff,

things that a simple be polte notice goes along way to stop,

oh and please a note that all kinds of avatars are welcome to visit, as long as they’re not disruptive, and not RPing.

people are going to unpack boxes on your lawn unless you lock everything down, which causes other problems for me because i can’t unlink things when you turn the build off. autoreturn is your friend. it’s just they way the grid works.
