Reading Suggestion

If, like me, you don’t really know a great deal about Victorian times, I’ve got the book for you–Inside the Victorian Home: A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England.  I’m about four chapters in, and I’ve already learned a lot.  (Good gravy, what they had to do just for laundry!  Poor Lisa Fargazer, toiling away in the asylum… turns out not nearly enough work was being described for her. *chuckle*)

Spread the love

I’ll be looking for a copy of that, thank you!  Another book I’ve had in my reference library for eons is The Light of the Home – you might be interested in that one, as well.

    Opened to a random page:

Gwen Raverat’s family bathroom “had a sort of grotto containing a shower-bath at one end; this was lined with as many different stops as the organ in King’s Chapel. And it was as difficult to control as it would be for an amateur to play that organ. Piercing jets of boiling, or ice-cold, water came roaring at one from the most unexpected angles, and hit one in the tenderest spots.”

    Good heavens!
