Is it a lake or is it in fact the actual Iron Bay?

Speculation Lake.
Known in some local circles as Levitation Lake, it’s the site of a doomed mining operation. Having discovered traces of cavorite in small surface pits, a large operation was organzied to extract cavorite for export.
Once the main pit was established and some promising deposits removed, the speculator at the head of the company responsible insisted on going as deep as possible in one go. Having got in under a large chunk of mostly pure cavorite, the crew removed some more soil and rock, then there was a small earthquake. There was a massive thunderous crash, rocks and debris flew over the northwest of the city, and a cloud of soot and dust hung in the air for several hours.
When things finally settled, the entire mining operation was simply gone. Air operations in the city were suspended until the sky cleared. After a few days, a local astronomer caught sight of a huge clump of earth (rumoured to be covered with scrambling mining crew) at an almost incomprehensible altitude, still ascending and drifing southward.
Once air travel was again authorized, no trace of the clump could be found and the search was abandoned.
Miners throughout the Steamlands still remove their hats and look to the sky when the lake is mentioned.
