I think it is time to refill the long vacant position of Captain of the Citizens Militia, which has been nebulous at best since Wiggy stepped down and Darian (who was a fur, which I say to squelch a certain vicious rumor) faded away. After all, there is a HQ building still standing next to the Gangplank. If I interested, please contact me inworld today.
here’s my thoughts on militias, so we are all on he same page.
this is a city.
this is a citizen self defense organization.
I am not firing Jed.
when filling an ‘authority’ role, your character needs to be a hell of a lot dumber than you are, or there is no roleplaying for anyone except yourself. Wiggy did this particularly well.
Babbage rp is not a kill game. Keep the story going. coordinate with the person driving the plot before jumping in with the troops or you are going to break something.
armed sailors are not marines.
our navy, realistically, is most likely a bunch of rich guys playing with boats, shipbuilders who want to prove their toys, and some very competent coasties that know how to deal with pirates. the navy is its own militia, as is the air corp, which would be a more youthful daredevil bunch playing with their toys, especially during kraken season.
don’t shoot people.
you get to run the jail.
I see….
How good are the kickbacks..?
pretty shabby.
Bah… Well that can be fixed. Its just a matter of education.
Just a thought: Maybe it would be good to choose two captains or a captain and an officer who are in different time zones, so there’s one at european times and one at american times. Or we let Victor do it, because he lives nearly 24 hours a day in babbage.
Splendid idea, and do we have a volunteer?
“our navy, realistically, is most likely a bunch of rich guys playing with boats”
Couldn’t help but laugh cuz that would be about the extent of my naval “qualifications”.
I have never considered myself rich, comfortable perhaps.
The urchins and likely other persons in Babbage of no address (I seem to recall a gent mentioned in the newspapers being of no address), frequently make meals of rats. By comparison then, to have means in excess enough to own a boat of any measure, might be deemed “rich”.
You want me to volunteer? Me, the German? Really??
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xf150l_preusen-in-memoriam_fun#.UQwQI2et8rI
oooh, denken Sie an die Deutschenuniformen!
and Pickelhauben?
We actually do have a German…other than you Am
What’s your problem?
None at all. I was just saying that there was a lady who signed up last fall who lives in that side of the world.
Oh, there are many new europeans and some germans. That’s why I suggested two captains in diffrent time zones. I would like to do some roleplay especially militia roleplay and I would like to help, but I can’t do the captains job, because I didn’t make much rp and don’t feel like I could fill such a big job.
You REALLY dont want me being a captain of the militia…in about 2 weeks i’ll be running a protection racket through the entire city…
I vote for Victor as Businesspersons’ Alliance Liaison.
Businesspersons’ Alliance Liaison Lieutenant Substitute.
JIMMY for captain of the militia!
i’ll have to dig into the group to be sure, but i think he is still capt of the air corps.
Nope, retired a couple years back. The Aether Corps was independent, but has since been folded into the general militia.
The building next to the Gangplank has become a bit obsolete given the brand spanking new militia headquarters just up the hill. I don’t know if the new one has a jail though, and our building is empty, so I think we’re open to ideas.
Is there another new building besides the naval HQ?
I think the current place is okay but could definitely use a rebuild contest.
Maybe I’m a bit fuzzy on the branches of our militia. Is the Navy not synonymous with the New Babbage militia? I thought the new naval HQ was intended to be the new militia HQ.
But true, the old building does need a rebuild. We’ve just been pondering what to do with that space.
Tenk says above “the navy is its own militia”.
So, I think there are/were technically 3 separate “organizations”:
Historically, the separate groups usually end up being created because you’ll have one person, or a few people who are *really* into one area. They’ll step up and offer to do something with it so they, and other residents, can have fun. Some residents serve in one group, some serve in all, depending on their interests.
I can tell you that from the perspective of an estate owner, it’s nice
when residents step up and volunteer to contribute to the community in
this way (in spite of the fact that we know it’s a risk for disagreements).
The group(s) will be all gung ho for awhile, sometimes years, but eventually people move on and it’s hard to keep the groups going. You are *lucky* if someone keeps a group alive, even if it’s just a few people contributing their time and effort.
Yes, I am referring to Jed Dagger, who has put in innumerable hours of community work in a variety of ways for New Babbage.
I have lived in the Steamlands since the very beginning and I have *never* seen a situation in any community in which residents were “not allowed” to join one of these types of groups, when the groups were directly connected to the estate.
Some people go off and create their own groups that exist in the estate, but that are not carrying the name of the estate. It happened in Caledon in 2008. In that case, that’s a private group in which the members determine the rules.
All of the estate owners, Tenk included, are unfailingly fair. If anyone felt “not allowed” to join, then that means that there was zero direct communication on the matter. It’s as simple as talking directly to someone and asking. There is sometimes a need to explain how things developed as they did, and why things are the way they are now. You won’t know any of this unless you ask.
On that note, I wish for a successful Captain-recruiting process for the New Babbage Citizens Militia!
About the building:
The original HQ was in Wheatstone, and was owned by Wiggy. When he let the lot go, Star stepped up and built the building in Clockhaven. It passed to Blackberry, and then to the Lighthouse Experience, who were very gracious in allowing it to continue. The downfall was space, and a low prim budget. Again, I was very thankful to all the previous owners who were so generous to give us what we had. Last year I had an offer to build a larger facility, with a touch more space and a larger prim budget to decorate. Since the old building was largely unused, and really had a small prim allowance, I figured we’d close the other one and let Junie and Emerson have the space back since they have been good enough to allow it to continue.
Once the new Captain is in place, we can cohabitate in the new area, or they can stay at the other building, or we can figure out something else.
Firing Jed would not be a particularly good idea on account I reckon she would fire back…
good point.
Hmmmm. Captain of the Militia sounds tempting.
If I may?
The new Militia HQ, ie. New Babbage Naval Station, was originally intended to be a Babbage Militia HQ. No one showed any interest in it, save for Jed – who IS the New Babbage militia (let’s not get things twisted – without her, there would be NO New Babbage Militia (atm)) – and 1LT Morgan Beckett, Commander of the New Babbage Marines (yes – he is a real player in SL with a real typist).
As it is my land and a gift from me to the people of New Babbage, for the purpose of defense, and as the only interested party was the Navy/Marines, it was given to them specifically. We can discuss rectifying that if/when the need is more relevant.
As a historical note – specific to the US: Up until the (late) start of the 20th Century, the US Marines were used as subsitute law enforcement in behalf of cities and states w/o (and for the federal government in dire situations). It is a role they could fulfill in New Babbage, if the chance were permitted…just saying.
So to wrap up my bit of soap boxing and obvious bias for the Marines (of which I once proudly served in the company of) – I would like to nominate 1LT Morgan Beckett for the position, and would ask others who know of his service accomplishments (such as the every lovely Miss Riel) to second that nomination if their conscience so directs.
1) No one showed any interest in it, save for Jed – who IS the New Babbage militia
Hey, what am I–chopped liver? *thppt* *wink*
2) I don’t think I’ve ever seen, let alone met, Lt. Beckett. When is he usually around, so that I may rectify that?
Book, please know I meant no slight. I have only ever (of late) witnessed interest in the militia via Jed and Morgan.
As for 1LT Beckett – I spoke with him last night while he was working on the HQ building. I believe he said that he would be inworld again tonight doing the same. It is also my understanding, after I told him that I would be nominating him, that he would only accept the nomination on one condition – he wished to make himself available to a public review board so that they could understand what they would be buying BEFORE hiring him. Just name the time and place.
Would he be available at european times too?
We’d need to ask him, but he seemed to be very accomodating. I’m sure if it were a weekend he could pull it off. My understanding is that he lives and works on the EST (US).
I know you meant no slight, Mr. Wexhome–I was teasing you some. Though I would put it to you that the militia is more than the building. I also did not know that the new Naval building was meant to replace the old headquarters until recently, when Commodore Dagger was kind enough to give me a tour of the new building. Too, I am certainly no builder, and so cannot contribute anything to it at this time. But I have been, and continue to act as, a member of the militia when the situation calls for it (one of the zombie plagues, the Dark Aether troubles, the recent problems connected with the asylum…)
Which is not to say that I’m throwing my hat into the ring. I’ve been mulling it over, off and on, even before Tenk posted this announcement. On the one hand, I understand what Tenk means about how Wiggy handled the role, and I’ve always been a proponent of communication and planning in RP. On the other hand, though, to take the role would mean mostly stepping back from the more active role I’ve enjoyed in RPing to this point, and could mean a halt to the evolution of Bookworm as a character. I don’t know that I’m willing to do that. (And I, too, could not operate at European-friendly times. Or even US-friendly times, for the most part. I go to bed early. *wry grin*)
I know, and can vouch for 1LT Beckett.
It was he and Commodore Dagger who provided New Toulouse with support during our hurricanes in 2011 and 2012. Both I and the residents at the time greatly appreciated their assistance during the disasters.
New Babbage, via the Commodore and 1LT, was the only Steamlands community to step up and provide us with aid, in either year.
From 1LT Beckett’s performance on those occasions, I believe he would be an excellent candidate.
((He was also an extremely good sport when at some point I caught him afk and said something rather cheeky to him. :-) ))
If you want examples of Wiggy’s work as Captain, you can read about the murder of William DeFaw, and a story I ended up calling Ruby Dreams.
What about a communal clank av? Almost like Iron Man armor that any typist with the password can step into as needed/desired to assume the identity? A clank with an iffy cogitator-thingy can be glitchy and their behavior inconsistent… plus there’s less of a chance such an important community stalwart won’t be available for RP if several people are able to take on the role.
sharing an SL account will earn you a permaban when the lab discovers it, no matter how benign. it is a TOS violation. you’d need some sort of hardware masker to come back from that.
Heavens… I suppose I should read that TOS thing one of these days.
Well, if not a shared account, what about a shared look (skin, uniform, etc.) with one of those tittle attachments so different people can take on the appearance and fill the role as needed?
Instead of Iron Man, the new captain can be like Wolverine in the comics and somehow appear in a dozen simultaneously occurring adventures every month.
