Since arriving in New Babbage, I have two general rules of getting around that may be of use for general simulation and to stimulate polity, communication, a bit of realism. There are to things I do, or, actually, try not to do:
1) Unless shanghai’d by lag and deposited into the sewers or a chimney or such, I do not use t … *koff* … I will not tele … *hack* … I refrain from ((teleporting)) anywhere.
2) If I am in a hurry or have a long way to go – gout, you know, and I am no longer a spring chicken – and feel the need to take to the air I make sure to employ a device that makes it plausible; I find a steampack useful or, if I want to make a grand entrance, some form of flying engine or aerostat.
Are their other ways to teem the streets and impress the walk throughs?
steam traction engines, but they take up a fair bit of the roadway. Some of the horse-drawn conveyances seem to be decent as well. as far as the sea and canals are concerned, there are sevaral small vessels out there that fit in quite nicely.
Mr Valeska, I have a new steam powered quadracycle I’ll send you, for testing. It is narrower than the average steam gurney for user on our peculiar streets, but more comfortable than a boneshaker, as well.
Now, I would love to have a boneshaker! Unless my wife murders me in it, that is.
I might be interested in a narrow one. I have a big one that is the devil to pay in our streets. The steam segway works well, tho…
Duplicate post over-written cuz I doan wanna look like a doofus.
Is it actually possible to get from one end of New Babbage to the other by street vehicle? When I walk, there are always a lot of stairs.
so, a steam vehicle that can negotiate stairs…. is that a challenge? hehehe
if you take Abney Parkway I think it is possible.
Yes, it is an open road from Clockhaven, past the Gangplank, through the Port and into the Gut. Turn left in the Gut to the canal then continue west and run off the end of the bridge and fall into Iron Bay. Mind the Wiggyfish. I’ve seen them schooling there at times.
I make a point of wearing a flight pack when i build, as i frequently have to fly up during the construction process at the sandbox. It’s just a freebie and doesnt even have a built in flight feather, but it has steam and little wings that come out when i go up, so it makes me feel more comfortable about attaining height and hovering.
In addition to the enjoyment of travel by walking or going in a conveyance there is no better way to learn the geography of a place. Earlier this summer in Armada I took part in a running gun battle (a “capture the flag” game). I learned my way around that area rather well. I don’t advocate being shot at as part of the educational process but it is true, what they say about it concentrating the mind.
I do occasionally poof from one part of the city to another when I want to quickly look at something. When around other people I prefer to walk out of sight first but I confess that I’m sometimes lazy – or falling asleep – and will vanish in a puff of inexplicable vapor. My first choice however is to hop on my airship and take off.
Oooo! Lemmee know if another running gun battle occurs in Armada. Herr Oldrich resides there, but is not always around and now too good at communication. Sounds like great fun! Perhaps we should have one here? Or would Clockwinder disapprove?
he would not.
contact Captain Static to get in the scrimmage loop at Armada.
It’s possible, yes
