Scottie and Sky stood side by side as they opened up the Book of Wagers that sat on the counter of ‘Cuffs. They were curious to see what bets had been placed for the question that everyone had been discussing for weeks now:
Who will be the last standing: Malus or Lapis?
Per usual, the entries described various amounts of quatloo and bartering…
Scottie writes in his wager, betting heavily on Lapis, “Experience over youth. I have to believe that’s worth something…”
Sky takes the quill from Scottie and playfully says to him, “For once I’m going to have to agree with you.” She jots down an additional two hundred quatloo on the side of Lapis.
Not that I know either of the two involved but I’ll put 200 on the kid who wears the sun glasses at night.
Loosen that cravat, son. Mr. Cory Hart isn’t in the running.
Madam, surely you realize by now I have no sense of humour.
Now, do you want the livestock I have collected for your niece or not?
You’re a tad pushy for a would-be suitor, wouldn’t you say?
(It’s going to take much more than livestock.)
kicks a crate over to the counter to step up to the book, and writes in his spidery script-
Lapis. 50q. M. T.
*hobbles up to the bar and peeks over the top, just tall enough to look at the book*
I know neither of these fellows, but I can read well enough to know an underdog when I see one.
*takes the quill and scrawls with a drippy flourish*
Malus. 200q. A. Sharp
Tepic hauls over a bar stool, clambers up, and reads the book carefully. After a thoughtful pause, considering a fight between the Brothers, he makes his choice….
Miss Junie and Mr Lighthouse, two pints voles milk
*Consults the Bones, and frowns*
*Casts the bones again and raises an eyebrow and writes in the book.*
Malus – 1 ounce of ambergris. Old Hob
*Arnold looks at the books out of curiosity and wondered why everyone would assume the two brothers would fight. He doesn’t know either of them particularly well, and to him it was a very odd conclusion for people to assume and bet on. If there was no fight and both men were left standing then everyone lost.
Maybe the two have some kind of history, Arnold shrugged and turned to see if there was a betting pool on if one or more of the men will end up in a dress.*
*Looks in the book and sees Old Hob’s bid*
*Mutters* “Where did he get that?”
*Writes*
Lapis – 50q. Captain Lupindo
*Leans over the book and hesitates,* I just think you should know that I don’t like either of them. But, a promise is a promise.
Malus- 250q. S. MacB.
Goes straight for the book and writes in green ink from her own inkpot:
500q-Brother Dominic Lapis (a small symbol drawn here) Phaedra Underby
Slips back out before anyone can ask any questions.
Leafing through the book Deyni notices it is pretty evenly matched
25q Malus25q LapisUnable to make a decision, Deyni slips out of Cuffs and returns to the Porthead Tavern
Lapis. 50. JB
tips toes in … peeks in the book ..
quickly jots down 200. on Brother Lapis ..
nods nods to self looks about as I quickly and quietly .. tip toe out (( with twinkle toes music playing in my head ))
Scottie hops down from the mantle at Cuffs after their guest leaves, penciling in:
Malus – 1q – B.R.
*wonders if he is allowed to bet*
No.
Damn, I was hoping to win enough to pay my tier next month. I guess it’s back to the printing press in the basement.
*Arnold sent a message forward at one point explaining what Palmer added to the contract, and as the 29th approaches he wonders if Emerson ever got the letter about being declared dead and losing his home.*
Lapis 300Qt J.Dagger
Lapis. 1000q. U.
*comes in, writes “both K.O. each other, 20Q”
Sister Loxely quietly enters the establishment during vacant hours. She gives a shake of her head as she reads the wagers. In clean, precise hand she makes a note at the bottom.
Brother Lapis. 28q.
The sister hesitates as she considers the wisdom of noting her affiliation. She settles on remaining discreet.
-Julia
Reads the wagers and wishes she had a quatloo so she could write her name in it too. At least Emily will be happy to know that everyone thinks Brother Lapis will win.

/me realizes he is becoming increasingly irrelevant considering he had to determine what ‘quatloo’ is…
i believe Lupindo was the first to bring it here, imported from ‘the gamesters of triskelion’
a quatloo is an archaic imperial unit of currency no longer in use except in markers, wagers, and gambling. in current coin worth about…
but that would spoil the ‘economics’ category for oiling festival this year.
Well, I was going to bet on Lapis, but this is so very uneven, isn’t it? ::leans over to mark down in the book::
Malus. 100q. K. Sonnerstein
Bookworm peeks into Cuffs, having heard about the betting book. She reads over the entries, chuckling quietly. Suddenly, an impish gleam lights her eyes, and she grabs the pen to scribble in an entry.
10q. Something interrupts them before an outcome is determined. B. Hienrichs
Malus. 200q. Tom L.
