Concerning Strange Signs and the Church

Before a long day of work on a few incomplete cases Sky sat at the desk in her flat, diligently preparing lesson plans. She needed to work quickly to finalize the material since word had it a few more people were now interested in her personal instruction. Though she sat with her eyes dancing across the page of yet another book of Italian fencing techniques Sky’s mind was focused elsewhere. A confident voice played over and over in her thoughts…

“Great Builder, Our Father and Teacher, Bless the Lines of this House with your Divine Logic. Reason is our foundation, and Logic, our weapon. The Laws of the Universe are Constant.”

Those were the words Brother Dominic Lapis had used the night prior to bless a new building in Clockhaven. Sky could not help but be intrigued by the Brothers, something about how they interacted with one another seemed so familiar. She audibly sighed, dog-earing the page before closing the book and opening up her weathered journal to write…

Wednesday, August 25th, 188-

Not all religious groups are blindly ignorant or painfully daft, or at least that is what I’m beginning to hope…

Last night I took a turn about town on my usual patrol and saw a strange shade of red on the ground in front of City Hall. Drawing near, my jaw tightened as I read the words “AND THE STREETS SHALL RUN WITH BLOOD” followed by a large circled star with an animal’s head at the center. My mind quickly reeled with thoughts and speculations on who would do such a thing. Though I knew better I spoke of the possibility of urchins being the vandals as a small crowd began to gather. After that many of the events are a blur of memories, my concern with the safety of New Babbage and keeping facts free from opinions took most of my attention.

I do remember the Clockwinder arriving, being rather displeased, asking for a runner to be sent to the Church of the Builder and commanding that the symbols be cleaned up. As folks continued to discuss the identity of the perpetrator, Brothers Lapis and Rudyard arrived. I’ll confess to being happy to see them once again, knowing that they are of sound mind and most importantly…users of Logic.

Though I had only met them this past weekend at the ball I have had plenty of encounters with them since for my trust to grow. (Sidenote: The Brothers dance divinely and have great senses of humor.) The Brothers quickly set to work examining the symbols and eventually proved that they believed the vandalism was not done by a true cult. I have yet to decide if I concur or not, but it is certainly a fair judgment. After all, it could be a new member of a cult attempting to impress the elder members…the possibilities are endless.

As the crowd dwindled, a few new people arrived to examine the symbols. The Brothers remained, patiently explaining their views on the situation. Eventually, Pip showed up causing tensions to spike. You see, the Church has been on the hunt for Pip for a while now. Something about lying, attempted murder and Stargirl, I believe. After some polite conversation, the Brothers carefully seized Pip and took him to the Church while they were followed by extremely concerned and angered onlookers. I quietly followed, fearing that the situation would escalate.

Soon after, I sat in the Church as debates filled the air, the onlookers attempting to politely hold their ground as the Brothers calmly explained and went about their business restraining Pip to a cell. In the end it seemed the onlookers and the Brothers had reached a polite conclusion to their discussions for the night.

I remained there for the better part of the evening, sitting and reading a book on carpentry written in Latin that Brother Rudyard was kind enough to let me borrow. Now the question remains, why was I there? Truth be told, I’m not quite sure, other than wanting to confirm that the Brothers would be kept safe. It perhaps seems strange that I am so drawn to them, but their closeness to one another and common goal reminds me so much of one of my old airship crews…Lapis and Rudyard standing in large similarity to two old mates of mine. Plus, Brother Lapis is also an expert in fencing and we have agreed to compare notes on the sport. I suppose I’m hoping to get to know them a bit better, and perhaps find some of that old camaraderie again.

I’ll be sure to stop by the Church today to pay the Brothers a visit. Hopefully all will be well this evening…I still have plenty to consider.

I stopped by to check this out. Quite the spectacle. It’s amazing to see how many folks went to work trying to scrub the area clean quickly. People pulling together when something like this happens is why I love living in Babbage.
    ((Nice write-up!))

((Churches with cells in them?????  Aren’t we in the wrong time period for the Inquisition???))

((First, if a church had cells during the historical Inquisition period, it would still have cells in Babbage’s time period.  It’s unlikely they would have torn them down to please people.

Second, perhaps you have yet to notice, but Babbage exists in some sort of alternate world, where alternate churches exists, with alternate motives and practices.  It would be unwise to compare these to churches in our world.))

the first views of plants under microscope reminded the scientist of monks in their cells (small rooms), from which we have the relatively modern biology term.
