You’ve been there, done that, and probably broken a keyboard or two out of anger. But really, builders what -drives- you to the brink when it comes to the completion, or even starting of a new project? What trials do you face? What errors do you fix or try to at least? And what makes you simply give-up altogether?
Amuse me…
my interiors suck.
Me too. I usually focus so much on exteriors and not care so much about interiors.
I have an extremely bad habit of deleting entire buildings.
Textures. They are the worst. I have a few completely built projects in my inventory that just need to be textured but bluhhhhhhh I can’t bring myself to do it.
Every aspect of building. That’s why my builds suck. I’d rather build in RL any day.
Amen. I find RL “prims” easier to manipulate.
((it might be a stretch for me to actually consider myself a builder, despite what I might say IC… but one problem I fall victim to time and again is not taking enough care to ‘select face’ when re-texturing. as a result, rather than changing something small like a window frame, I end up with an entirely re-textured build.))
I textured the entirety of our home in blue wood earlier this year XD
Day one: Grid-shmid, who needs it!
Day Ten: OMG Why won’t anything line-up!?!? Why Didn’t I use the grid? WHY? WHY!?
And this happens every. time. I. build.
lining things up, lining textures up, trying to make a decent looking exterior and interior on limited prims
Oh I second that… the prim limit. I tend to forget that you actually have to furnish a building with prims once it is built.
Roofs on anything non-square.
I have reached the roof screaming point…
Texturing a co-worker’s builds. After the old Paris sim, never again! Though when working on my old builds, making sure prims meet smoothely without the irritating flickering overlap is my bane.
*is taking notes, sipping coffee, and reminding herself why she still doesn’t wish to build by reading all these fabulous replies.*
Never let the prim see you sweat. **smotes an evil prim with her delete key.
Painting over building any day for me…but heaven protect that unruly, dastardly sculpt that twists and blurs a carefully placed detail.
Oh god nooooooooo! I HATE that! Such a carefully laid out texture custom for a specific sculpt and you apply it and find SOME area SOMEWHERE that is just a stretched smudge!
Trying to get the textures on connecting walls to line up JUST right…. Mostly prim limits though. I’ve spent a fortune scouring the grid for low prim furniture and props, and am forced to set aside some really excellent freebies because of it.
Roofs….roofs are evil.
Oddly enough, knowing what i want to build, getting most of the way there and then finding i don’t have the particular skill to bring it to a conclusion! I have many build projects which are “almost” there, but will never quite be finished. So, my own artistic, creati8ve, scripting and other limits.
I will say though, that once in a while, when playing about with prims, a simple manipulation i’ve not done before produces some wonderful things – the engines on my windmill build, a simple one prim table, all accidents, all immensely pleasing to me.
Building something while asleep, only to realize while waking that I can’t save the work.
And like Tepic I also have a number of not quite finished projects. Either from not knowing how to proceed or being distracted by new ideas.
I always manage to do odd things when scripting my vehicles. I`m getting better at it now, but there are still hilarious moments when one wants to fly upside-down.
Then there are the hilarious times when i unlink a physical vehicle and it apslodes all over the place.
In my limited experience “building” (really I’m more of a ‘take existing objects and link them into new ready to use objects’ modder) I really hate when I’m just trying to move an item and somehow rotate the whole build sideways and askew… Or worse yet, when I am almost finished with the build and then by some glitch unlink the entire project and have to start over.
I guess that’s one way to gain extra experience and practice ;-)
*nods in agreement*
Last night I accidentally linked my door to my house, and when I opened it, the door stayed in the same place and the rest of the house rotated.
It was appalling and entertaining at the same time.
Corners.
Roof-related things
Angles.
The funniest script-related thing was the infamous ‘vomit comet’ incident, when I put the prop rotation script for the airship in the pilot’s seat. Ask Sera, she was there.
*wonders why he is smiling so much as he reads this thread*
I know I am…it’s the builders AA meeting in my mind…we are all here to vent, but are still addicted to the challenge.
texturing
Oh bane of my existence…thy name is prim count.
Not being able to stretch megaprims, and having to do kludgy things when you just want a simple large prim. I’m kludgy enough as it is, without making me stoop to new levels with megaprims!
Prim count. Period.
