Brother Elim returned to his room after early Morning Prayer. He had begun to adjust to the sooty city after serving in Cape Town. Elim picked up an apple and polished it on his shirt.
Through his window he watched the dawn creep trough the murky streets. Movement in the alley caught his attention. A shabby urchin followed a hunched elderly man. Noting body language, and the approach, probability the urchin would pickpocket the old man 98.2%.
Elim considered the urchin’s motivation for theft. High probability hunger was the main motivator. Elim identified the elderly man as an attendee of the Church of the Builder services.
All of this was assessed in a split second. Solution found. Distance, angle, wind, trajectory and additional variables calculated.
The urchin cried out and fell to the ground from the impact. The elderly man, alerted to the attempted theft, exits the area. The urchin observes the apple, grasps it, stands up and runs away.
Problem solved. Church member escaped, urchin fed.
Brother Elim picked up another apple.
Wow, an apple! I usually just give beer and cigarettes to urchins.
Liquid Bread does have some value.
