“Mumsy” Abigail Sharp returned to New Babbage to see to the welfare of her niece, Juniper Ginsburg. She is a shrewd, cranky, cantankerous, vitriolic, and a bit barmy old woman, but if she proves to be wealthy there are many aging bachelors in town that would be more than willing to step in and relieve her of bank accounts.
She has a step-son, Henry Sharp. Her husband was lost on a mining expedition to Terra Fosca.
