Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Good day. I heard there was a snow tutorial?
Azura Loring: Ellos Doc, aye, be right ‘ere
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Excellent.
Azura Loring: Ello Lady M
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Good day, Lady Moldylocks.
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): Hello Azura. Tenk, Hyde
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): …
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): Jekyll!
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): Sorry. Don’t know why i get you two mixed up all the time.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Nor do I…
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Hello, Miss Ying.
Kimika Ying: Hello Doctor
Azura Loring: Ohhh spiffy
Mosseveno Tenk: mm, i guess i can live with that
Mosseveno Tenk: ]
Azura Loring: giggles.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Good day, Miss Wells.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): …Who is not here. I thought I saw her.
Azura Loring: hmm me nawt see ‘er ?
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Oh, wait. There she is.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Somebody has vis off on a plot
Mosseveno Tenk: righto. if you know how to build, this will be boring. if you are new, you need this
Azura Loring: ahh ya, jus noticed dat
Mosseveno Tenk: the basic snow issue is in the box. the materials might change, but i can live with these for now
Mosseveno Tenk: is everyone in firestorm?
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Yes.
Azura Loring: aye
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): yes
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Just updated it last night.
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): show off
Mosseveno Tenk: i’ll also need you to get into full settings with lights on. i wear a headlight in my goggles so i can see what i’m doing when i do this.
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): full settings?
Mosseveno Tenk: to get the light settings, its cntrl p
Mosseveno Tenk: local lights
Mosseveno Tenk: advanced lighting model
Azura Loring: ahh kks
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): oh ok
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Advanced lighting
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Ambient occlusion?
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): I have advanced lighting model on.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Just go Ultra. You’ll never look back ;)
Mosseveno Tenk: go ahead and buy the textures and materials box so you can get the class floder. that’s what i’ll use to show you how the alignment works.
Mosseveno Tenk: can everyone see the bump and shine on the cobblestones we are standing on?
Mosseveno Tenk: you need to be able to see it
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): I can.
Azura Loring: aye see it
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): yes
Mosseveno Tenk: ok
Mosseveno Tenk: lest to the danger will robinson first
Mosseveno Tenk: the legacy prim accounting , that is, land impact, is not honest!
Mosseveno Tenk: for example, here is a prim torus
Mosseveno Tenk: it costs 1
Mosseveno Tenk: BUT
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): grabs something to hold onto
Mosseveno Tenk: if i apply amatterial to it, it will go to honest accounting
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): This is going to hurt
Mosseveno Tenk: so ill do it, then you click on it and see what happened.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Thirty five?!
Azura Loring: holy crap
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): I have Veronica as a witness. I had one to 900 in the Fells
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): 906, I think
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): geeesh
Mosseveno Tenk: yes, it went to 35
Azura Loring: just from a texture? .. wow ..
Mosseveno Tenk: the lag issue we had in the canals for all those years was being caused by the bridges. where were made outof about 32 torii each
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Start twisting, if you dare
Mosseveno Tenk: hahaaaa
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Ouch
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Note to self: Avoid tourii like the plauge.
Mosseveno Tenk: this will happen to any prim that has complicated topology. torus is the worst
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Yes
Mosseveno Tenk: tube it will happen also, and hollow prims
Azura Loring: nods and listens
Mosseveno Tenk: box cut into triangle will do it
Mosseveno Tenk: but box skewed into triangle will not
Kimika Ying: And its easy to do by mistake if you’re not thinking.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Quite so
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Until everything gets returned
Mosseveno Tenk: so. don’t go applying materials to things me and henry own. i’ve been replacing the tube corners on the sidewalks with a mesh replacement lizzy made for me, but they are not all there yet
Mosseveno Tenk: so admins, if you have henry perms, and there’s materails applyed, you need to change materials to snow.
Mosseveno Tenk: if there are no materials applied, DON”T DO IT.
Mosseveno Tenk: i don’t want any object returns from primming out a sim
Mosseveno Tenk: righto, any questions so far?
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): raises hand.
Mosseveno Tenk: yes?
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Can this problem apply to mesh creations as well?
Mosseveno Tenk: no.
Mosseveno Tenk: all mesh objects account honestly
Azura Loring: Hmm interesting
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Good to know.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): And sculpts?
Mosseveno Tenk: it’s the legacy prims that do not, but are converted to new accoutning if you apply materials. these are things that are new within the past 2 years
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Sculpts are evil
Mosseveno Tenk: scupts i am not sure about. i’ll know by the end of the week
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Ah.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Because of the mapping, they aren’t likely to benefit from materials
Azura Loring: so no sculpts an no hollow like prims
Mosseveno Tenk: also, this applys to linked sets. if there is a torus in the set, it’s goign to happen. that’s how we found this out. i was putting materials no the canal walls, and one of the bridges when to 2000 prims, ebcuase the walls used to be linked to the bridges to get them out of the lots
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Yikes
Mosseveno Tenk: if you[‘re not sure, test it in a sandbox
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): question
Kimika Ying: A BIG sandbox.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Although current;y, 2000 would kill the Fells
Mosseveno Tenk: so. get the calss materials and let’s make some sidewalks
Mosseveno Tenk: most the sidewalks are 3m wide. so let’s do that
Mosseveno Tenk: the sidewalk texture is called cobble1 repair1
Mosseveno Tenk: now notice it is the right width. we’re in DEFAULT texture mapping
Azura Loring: nods
Mosseveno Tenk: i want to manipulate my textures one face at a time, so i am putting my radio button on SELECT FACE
Mosseveno Tenk: lest make it 10 m long and 3 m wide
Mosseveno Tenk: hmm, it kinda looks stretched
Mosseveno Tenk: stand on your prim so we know who is doing what
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Great. Now I’m in it for jumping ahead
Mosseveno Tenk: smartass
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): ;)
Mosseveno Tenk: so the stones are all stretched out. lets increase the repeat in the horizontal plane
Mosseveno Tenk: nice numbers are your frineds
Jimmy Branagh: Oh thet’s tricksy!
Mosseveno Tenk: notice that odd whole numbers put the edge of the texture on the edge of hte prim
Mosseveno Tenk: and even whole numbers put the center of the texture on the edge of the prim
Mosseveno Tenk: so lets go with an even number until it looks right
Mosseveno Tenk: 4 looks pretty good
Mosseveno Tenk: but you know, i like having the edge of the texture at the edge of the prim
Mosseveno Tenk: so we need to adjust the offset
Mosseveno Tenk: the offset to the edge is half the distance to the nearest whole number
Mosseveno Tenk: whole odd number. most of the time…
Mosseveno Tenk: so 2-1=1
Mosseveno Tenk: half that is .5
Mosseveno Tenk: lets put .5 in the horizontal offset
Mosseveno Tenk: and there it is!
Mosseveno Tenk: edge of the texture to edge of the prim
Mosseveno Tenk: ya know, i still don’t like it
Mosseveno Tenk: i want the dark border on both sides
Azura Loring: giggles.
Mosseveno Tenk: what if i increase the vertical repeat just a little bit…
Mosseveno Tenk: hmmm
Mosseveno Tenk: i’ll cheat and tell yuo it is 1.05
Azura Loring: waves ta jimmy
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): Hehe
Mosseveno Tenk: now how am i going to center that?
Mosseveno Tenk: anyone?
Jimmy Branagh: waves
Snow Clawtooth: why dont you just adjust the faces of the prim to get what you want?
Mosseveno Tenk: remember… half the distance to the whole odd number
Mosseveno Tenk: so 1.05 – 1 = .05
Mosseveno Tenk: half of that
Mosseveno Tenk: .025
Mosseveno Tenk: lets put that in the vertical offset
Mosseveno Tenk: algebra!
Mosseveno Tenk: it works!
Azura Loring: giggles.
Jimmy Branagh: Less hit and miss
Mosseveno Tenk: does everyone’s sidewalk look like mine?
Azura Loring: kinda aye
Mosseveno Tenk: ok. lets’ look at the sides.
Mosseveno Tenk: there used to be a seperate texture for the sides. but that’s be eliminated with teh mesh sidewalks
Mosseveno Tenk: so first , get teh horizontal texture to match the top
Mosseveno Tenk: that was 4 on the repeat, .5 on the offset
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): There we go.
Dee Wells Dagger (promiscute): sneaks away and skips out of class
Mosseveno Tenk: now for the vertical
Mosseveno Tenk: this is intuitive if you are good with numbers, if not, i’ll just tell you
Mosseveno Tenk: just like we did on top, make the repeat .05
Mosseveno Tenk: now .5 offset will bring the edge of the texure to teh center of the prim
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): Question
Mosseveno Tenk: wait
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): k
Mosseveno Tenk: so then add half the repeat, that is, .025
Mosseveno Tenk: so .525 offset brings it where we want it
Mosseveno Tenk: now you can ask
Mosseveno Tenk: your question
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): sorry to be dense, but is the idea to create one of these and then add snow to it….?
Mosseveno Tenk: we’re getting to that
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): k
Mosseveno Tenk: we’re reviewing basic texture alignment first, because i’m always surprised ad how many folks never figure it out
Mosseveno Tenk: it’s easy if you figured out the pattern, but i’m a math major….
Mosseveno Tenk: so….
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): that explains ALOT
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): heh
Mosseveno Tenk: righot. does everyone’s sidewalk look like mine?
Azura Loring: giggles.
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): I missed part of the class due to a glitch.
Mosseveno Tenk: now the cool thing is, once you got the textures aligned, you can switch to any other texture, and it’s still aligned.
Lady Moldylocks (moldylocks): take a seat in the back row, Jekyll
Mosseveno Tenk: so think? WALLPAPER
Mosseveno Tenk: once you got your wallpaper aligned, you can just swap the textures. and it’s still wallpaper
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): sighs and sits with Moldy.
Mosseveno Tenk: so let’s put the materials on the sidewalk now
Mosseveno Tenk: in your editing window, on the texture tab about half way down
Mosseveno Tenk: find the field that says texture(diffuse)
Mosseveno Tenk: push that
Mosseveno Tenk: and bumpiness(normal)
Mosseveno Tenk: find cobble1 repair1 bump
Mosseveno Tenk: and you can drag that from your inventory to the texture window
Janet Rhiadra: got it
Mosseveno Tenk: then push the field button again to get shininess(specular)
Mosseveno Tenk: and put in cobble1 repair1 shine
Mosseveno Tenk: or it might say more sepia or something
Mosseveno Tenk: now you have to align the matierals to the texture
Mosseveno Tenk: if you are not in firestorm, you are screwed
Jimmy Branagh: chuckles
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Oh dear.
Mosseveno Tenk: if you are in DEFAULT texture mapping, all you have to to is SYNCHORONIZE MATERIALS at the bottom of the fram
Mosseveno Tenk: and do this ONE FACE AT A TIME
Mosseveno Tenk: don’t select the whole prim
Jimmy Branagh: Ahh
Jimmy Branagh: scribbles
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): How convenient!
Mosseveno Tenk: you noticed how your sidewalk looked all jacked up until yuo did this?
Kimika Ying: Yes
Mosseveno Tenk: i’ve forced the shine maps to sepia tone because all the streetlights are yellow gaslamps
Mosseveno Tenk: otherwise, it loookes like everything got plastic wrapped
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): makes a note on that
Mosseveno Tenk: but for snow, it’s goint to be regular colors
Mosseveno Tenk: right
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): Ah.
Mosseveno Tenk: so how is everyone so far?
Azura Loring: gud .. me think ..
Mosseveno Tenk: now we need to talk about PLANAR texture mapping
Mosseveno Tenk: all the sidewalks are default
Mosseveno Tenk: but the streets and ice sheets are going to be planar
Mosseveno Tenk: because i don’t got time to do that much cross multiplication to get the textures lined up
Mosseveno Tenk: so lets’ put the SEAMLESS texture on he sidewalk now
Jimmy Branagh: brb
Mosseveno Tenk: it’s called cobble1 repair2 seamless
Mosseveno Tenk: and do the same for the bump and shine so it looks right
Mosseveno Tenk: i’m just going to work with the top face on my sidewalk
Mosseveno Tenk: notice that once yuo change the bump and shine, it looks right again, because the prim is already adjusted
Mosseveno Tenk: now lets’ drag a couple copies out by holding shift L while moving the mouse
Mosseveno Tenk: so you see i have 3 prim here
Dr. Henry Jekyll (nyanka.jinx): BRB. I have to take care of something real quick.
Mosseveno Tenk: and i need to align the textures
Mosseveno Tenk: so in select face mode
Jimmy Branagh: kback
Mosseveno Tenk: select all three top faces by holding shift while selecting with the mouse
Sammantha Sabetha: is offline.
Mosseveno Tenk: now in the texture tab, i/m going to change the DEFAULT fiedld to PLANAR
Mosseveno Tenk: default measueres in textures per length of the prim
Mosseveno Tenk: but planar measuers in textures per meter
Mosseveno Tenk: incidentally, terrain is .083 planar, you remember that as 1/12
Mosseveno Tenk: so now, still having all three faces selected. and my texture is in texture(diffuse) so you see the original texture in the winow
Mosseveno Tenk: then at the bottom
Mosseveno Tenk: you might have to hit planar again
Mosseveno Tenk: align planar faces
Mosseveno Tenk: and all the little square will align
Mosseveno Tenk: but they are goign to be really small
Mosseveno Tenk: i find .2 is usualy the right one
Mosseveno Tenk: so change teh scale (repeat) to .2
Mosseveno Tenk: and you might have to hit the algn button again
Mosseveno Tenk: then again to get rid of the check mark
Mosseveno Tenk: so the synchronize materials button will light up
Mosseveno Tenk: now whn you synchronize in planar, it’s going to go to twice of what you want. as you will see
Mosseveno Tenk: this is why we pick easy numbers
Mosseveno Tenk: so back in the diffuse texgture, lets copy the ,1
Mosseveno Tenk: wtih control c
Mosseveno Tenk: oops
Mosseveno Tenk: i mean the .2
Mosseveno Tenk: which is what we chose
Mosseveno Tenk: triple click, cnrtl c
Mosseveno Tenk: now change field to bump
Mosseveno Tenk: you’ll see it’s .4 in the horz and vert
Mosseveno Tenk: tripple click, cnrl v to paste in the .2 we copied
Mosseveno Tenk: and again in the shine
Mosseveno Tenk: and yuo might have to do it face by face
Mosseveno Tenk: if the face still looks wierd, but the underliying texture is right, synchronized that face again, then adjust the scale
Mosseveno Tenk: now you know all the secrets of texture alignment without a calculator.
Mosseveno Tenk: clear as mud?
Azura Loring: hehe gonna hafta notecard dis
Mosseveno Tenk: if you are a new builder, i suggest copying the transcript of this class.
Azura Loring: nods
Kimika Ying: Clear enough. :)
Mosseveno Tenk: it will make sense eventually. and it will save you a buttload of time and headaches
Mosseveno Tenk: righto, the snow texture is in the other box. ask around for the drift sculpts
Mosseveno Tenk: lets’ make some winter.
Jimmy Branagh: Thenks Mr. Tenk
Jimmy Branagh: Sorry was late. Speedreading bit me this time
Mosseveno Tenk: we didn’t put maerials on the snow last yer because there wasn’t an easy way to synchronize the materials
Azura Loring: Folks be givin out da drift sculpts?
Mosseveno Tenk: i ahve’t dug mine out yet
Mosseveno Tenk: kaylee made most of them. they might be in her shop still on marketplace
Azura Loring: nods
Mosseveno Tenk: texturing is the hardest part of building. if you can get past this class, you’ll be doing well.
Jimmy Branagh: Yup
Azura Loring: nods “Gonna try an notecard da transcript so me nawt screw up to bad …
Jimmy Branagh: You can make an inferior model excellent with good texturing
Mosseveno Tenk: see how fast taht went?
Azura Loring: nods
Mosseveno Tenk: you select the texture yuo want to go to last, then clikc the window, and your inventroy comes up, then you can switch them all to the first one you switched
Azura Loring: Ohhhh .. me never thought o’ dat
Janet Rhiadra: my feet are getting cold …
Mosseveno Tenk: the last face you select is the one you are referenceing to
Alyssa Hawthorn (alyssahawthorn): twirls in the snow
Azura Loring: nods “I will have ta go in sandbox and play around more with textures then.
