The Frozen North – Ouch!

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The dark unicorn pondered the strange noise...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

A pounding sound that reverberated through her head...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Then she began to remember...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

It started a few hours after leaving the abandoned telegraph station as Avariel pulled her cargo sled through the snow. Bunny XXVI bouncing about on the sled encouraging the unicorn to go faster as the snow fell more thickly, whirling about the two travellers...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

There was a noise... A strange distorted screaming noise... Then more screaming from all around! Some of the strange screaming voices sounded far away, while others were somewhat closer...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

As both the unicorn and bunny listened they could hear the sounds of large creatures bounding through the snow. At this point they ran! Avariel dragging the sled as fast as she could...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The screaming started again, this time some of the screamers were closer, the pursuing pack coming together! The sound of the strange bounding gate of the hunters clearly audible now to the unicorns sensitive ears...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Avariel quickly pulled the sled round and down off the path before dropping the harness. The bunny already pulling the covers from the packs as the unicorn dived for a cluster of small cylindrical objects...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The unicorn threw the big cluster of firecrackers up onto the path and ignited them with a laser bolt! The sound was incredible, a deafening onslaught of percussive explosions that sent the pursuing predators into a frenzy of confused growls and strange yelping sounds...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The trick had worked, but not well enough, the screaming starting up again from much further out. They had brought themselves some time, but the predators were not about to give up the chase...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Avariel quickly got to work getting the wireless set running as Bunny XXVI run of with the end of the antenna wire. The two adventurers getting the wireless up and running in record time...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Then in the middle of sending the last desperate message a huge creature lunged out of the snow and fog with a terrible scream! It was big, very big indeed, it looked like a massively oversized bunny with huge sabre-toothed fangs and shredded ears! Its paws sprouted large razor sharp claws and it screamed savagely as it leapt towards its prey...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The dark unicorn grabbed Bunny XXVI by the ears, pulling the bunny from the sled just as the monstrous creature slammed into all the equipment! The unicorn galloped blindly through the snow with the monster bunny close behind when suddenly the ground vanished from under her...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Avariel was in free-fall, everything slowing as she took stock of the situation. The snowflakes glistened as they slowly flew past, the sound of the wind in her ears rumbling with deafening intensity. There was no visibility, no way of telling how high they were above the ground. She still had the little white bunny clutched by its ears in her mouth while behind her the huge monster bunny continued its insane pursuit! Following her over the cliff edge like a crazed oversized lemming…

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The unicorn could feel the monsters hot breath as she lashed out with her hind legs, hitting the predator in the neck and propelling it up and away from her! With the snarling monster tumbling away into the mist Avariel set about the task of twisting gravity to stop her fall just as the ground hit them...

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

What was that noise?

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Avariel opened her eyes…

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

And saw the small white bunny jumping up and down on her head!

“Its ok, I'm awake now!”

Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

Really, you can stop that!”

The bunny sighed and jumped down into the snow.

Avariel carefully stood up, feeling somewhat worse for wear after the fall. Looking around she could see several large furry forms laying still and broken in the snow, the predators having fallen prey to the merciless force of gravity.

The bunny and the unicorn found themselves in a long snow filled valley that ran through the mountain range. Bunny XXVI looked at Avariel pondering the question of what they should do next.

Professor Falcon replied by picking up the bunny and poping it on her back.

“We shall go North!”.

As night settled over the mountains Professor Falcon and her bunny companion pondered another night trudging through the thick blanket of snow that covered the maze of canyons.

The unicorn felt considerably worn out by the experience, with the endless fog and snow storms it was hard to tell if they were going in the right direction. For all Avariel knew they may have been walking in endless circles.

It was at this point that the little light appeared.

The light was flickering and green in colour, looking for all the world like a bit of the northern lights had broken away and now floated over the snow ahead of the two travellers.

Avariel sped up to examine the light more closely, but the light also sped up keeping the same distance between itself and the unicorn. Then the unicorn stopped, and the light stopped.

“Now, that is really strange!” exclaimed the befuddled unicorn “Should we follow it?”. Bunny XXVI pondered this for a moment then nodded enthusiastically.

So for the next hour and a half the unicorn and bunny chased after the little light as it darted through the mountainous maze until all of a sudden the chase ended at a cave entrance. The light flickered for a moment outside the cave before shooting off into the sky.

It was only then that the travellers noticed the break in the weather, the sky was clear of snow clouds and the fog had lifted during the chase. The sky shimmered with curtains green luminescence as the tired unicorn and soggy bunny made their camp in the cave entrance.

Just inside the cave lay a goodly supply of old cut wood, maybe left by some past traveller. Both bunny and unicorn set to work making a small but cheery camp fire, ignited with a few well aimed laser bolts.

As the night drew on the two companions rested under the shimmering auroras pondering what they would do in the morning...
