Welcome to the 9th Annual New Babbage Oiling Festival, our version of
Spring Cleaning. We hope you will have time to visit.. and build!
The original Oiling Festival was held in 2009 to add needed items to
the city inventory and invite the greater steamlands to experience the
Babbage way of life. All good citizens and visiting steamlanders are
encouraged to roll up their sleeves, show their national pride, and
participate!
The Festival is now open. Building stops at midnight on AUGUST 31ST.
You may use any building technique at your disposal, althought
sculpts will be barred from categories that are intended to be added to
city inventory. Building in place encourages sharing
information and techniques, it helps everyone become a better builder, and it makes it feel like the bad old days when we used to all stand around and watch each other push a prim around.
And….. don’t forget to put what you build on Marketplace so we can all
enjoy it for years to come. (Not to mention that sales help you stay on
your land, which keeps the city rezzed! you only have to list it once!)
Judging and walk around to admire the results will take place on Sunday, JULY 16th.
This years categories are:
HONKING BIG MACHINE
sponsor:
land impact 100
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000
There’s a certain sense of awe one gets when watching a monumental engine go through its paces – whether it’s the massive pistons of an ocean liner’s engine room or the elegant, massive power of a beam engine pumping water. So build one – it does’t matter what it does, but it should move, be noisy, and be huge. An HBM will fit on a 25×25 meter platform and have a land impact of no more than 100. Entry limited to platforms available. One entry per person. Build only on city provided platform, rez prim on platform to claim. IM Mosseveno Tenk if you need more platforms.
GROUP 1 – Builders Square (4 platforms)
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Academy%20of%20Industry/186/106/111
GROUP 2 – Clockhaven Harbor
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Clockhaven/136/110/103
I would be honoured to be accepted as the sponsor for this competition.
you got it.
4 takers this year.
1st – Kimika Ying for The Useless Machine. Do go touch it.
2nd – Buckminster Solo for the DeGravotin, made with SIMCo’s latest miracle metal.
3rd(tie) – Artful Hammerer for the Gasometer, something we need more of in this town!
-Azura Loring for the Super Seckrit Thing #6-R1.
HBM’s will be derezzed Sunday night along with Burning Barrel Race clean up.
BUILDER’S PORTRAIT
sponsor: Edward Pearse
land impact 1
prizes: L$
Give us your selfie that shows your buildy side. Selected entries will be collected for a calendar. Place on easels at the Pearse’d & Cut mainstore in Babbage Palisade.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Babbage%20Palisade/161/46/106
I can up the Land impact to 2 if that helps.
Prizes: 1st L$2000, 2nd L$1000, 3rd L$500
Placed an easel outside of Pearse’d & Cut and my shop in Capabilty Mews for anyone which needs one. LI of one, just take a copy or buy for 0 L$. Just drag and drop your picture to the big white area and done.
Questions: I have some. Does it have to be a selfie? Can I take a pic of someone else and split the winnings, if any, with the subject?
Oh, and is any member of Fngineers of Babbage considered a builder, or only literal, virtual builders-from-scratch?
You can have someone else in the portrait if you want. As far as who is a builder, if you want to interpret it as say, builder of stories or builder of social groups or whatever, that’s entirely up to you :-)
i ain’t so much IN my one as sort of….. under it….
1st place: Tepic Harlequin for a brilliant rendition that made me smile.
2nd place: Wulfriðe Blitzen because flying monkeys make useful assistants.
3rd place: a tie between Captain Killian and Edda Borrelly.
Well done to everyone who entered!
FISH
sponsor:
land impact: 10
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000
Fauve Aeon is offering a special bonus prize for “something with tentacles”
Put a poster (required) with an image and description of your beastie on one of the easels at the Clockhaven Aquarium. Place your fish (optional if you built it) in one of the tanks. Please make sure it stays in the tank. The fish should be able to be added to a 7Seas fishing system.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Clockhaven/136/159/103
And how does a fish become compatable with 7seas system exactly?
Better late than never but we do have the 7Seas developer kit. It seems there were no entries at all this time? Ah well, maybe a summer or next year reboot with more information, perhaps? Or for another fishing system if 7S is not played here as much anymore?
can you dig out that info for everyone please?
Done, it’s called OpenSeas Developer Kit and everything is now in a copyable box set out at the Aquarium. Or anyone can just PM me for a copy. In the 7s fishing system, 3D fish are not commonly rezzed, they are either worn as attachable animated pets or sent to their aquariums where they are displayed as flat alpha textures on a prim. (Each specimen needs both versions, all the directions are in the dev kit.) It’s a good idea to make a common and uncommon version and then a rare or ultra rare version of the same fish with the rares having something special about them.
There is a blueprint/building aspect of the game as well, where you catch a blueprint and parts to assemble one of several things but I’m less familiar with that part. I like fish!
Citizens, cast your wee beady eyes to the Waters of New Babbage!
Surely there are some more fish waiting to be discovered in the Vernian Sea, the northern waters (my geography is hazy on names up there), lurking in the Canals…or maybe even unquietly mutating down in the Sewers…ew.
I’ll be working with the kit to make sure I know how to add the entires to the 7seas system so your Nightmares from the Deep can come to life as catchable specimens! Size is a factor as the 3D versions are wearable as pets and they rotate around the wearer. Some are more animated than others, some electric fish have visible and audible effects, many of the prettier fishes have little bubbles, some rares have color phasing, a few sparkle…there are a lot of potential ways to make something amusing or terrifying and of course unique to New Babbage. Mechanical fish, Steampunk robo-fish, experiments-gone-wrong escaped fish, fish altered by mysterious pollutants, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
I know there are some 7seas servers out already around the city and we will set ours out this weekend in Babbage Square and start collecting a list of the local fishing spot LM. 7s aquariums (public and private) allow the low LI flat prim “display” of the fish you catch, I will set out an example public aquarium that lets anyone send their caught fishes to show up in the tank.
GO MAKE A FISH! :D
Probably obvious but I’m pleased to sponsor the prizes, if I may.
No takers on the fish. This was a hard one.
the exhibit hall has been found. now we just gotta figure out how to get into it. i think it’s been drinking?
Bridges are in place Mr. Mayor. The tables and displays can begin to be placed.
10TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE JEWELRY
sponsor:
land impact: don’t prim out the sim. If it’s over 50, show a picture.
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000/500
We need some jewelry honor of the ten years New Babbage has been on the grid. If this category gets too primmy, I may have to request photos instead of objects to be rezzed.
Rez on designated table in exhibit hall.
BAR SUPPLIES & LIBATIONS
sponsor: His Most Serene Majesty, Emperor Ezra Crumb II
land impact: 10 or less
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000/500
Due to Mr Tenk’s recent real life woes, Oiling Festival got delayed until June, which is also National Drinking Month. Therefore, we will need to stock the bar!
There are a lot of bars in this town, so please, put your items for sale (yes, greater than 0 is okay) so everyone can resupply.
Rez objects on tables near the bar at rear of exhibit hall.
Just for suggestion Mesh glass bottles and glassware would be a wonderful thing.
BOARD GAMES
sponsor: Emerson Lighthouse
land impact: 15 or less
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000/500
What do we play? Does not have to be functional!!!! It could just be the box!
Special Prize (and extra land impact allowance) for chess sets.
Rez on tables in rear section of exhibit hall.
Okay, I’ve bought the games, read the instructions, (already lost a game piece, sorry Morphed, it slipped through my fingers and bounced into the canal) and am ready to render my board game judgment. First place goes to Captain Killiam for her New Babbage version of Clue (while I haven’t yet gone through the rules with a fine tooth comb, the first place award is contingent on the fact that I am never guilty); second place goes to Elleon Bergamasco for her Dredd Pirate Bob puzzle (are you sure all 500 pieces were included? I can’t seem to find his left eye); third place goes to Morphed Carter for Soots and Tentacles (Squire Malus and I have played this a dozen times, but every time I am on the cusp of winning I hit one of those effing tentacles).
Congrats to all – Emerson.
thank you sir, prizes have been distributed.
Many many thanks-you DID get all the pieces, the urchins promised they pack the boxes MOST carefully. I believe it must be that Bob is missling his left eye, obviously.
Wonderfully imaginative board games! I’d enjoy an evening playing New Babbage Clue and the Dredd Pirate Bob jigsaw puzzle is fun and nostalgic. I remember the picture from my days with the Scoundrel Fleet. And Soots & Tentacles is a classic – very Babbagey.
PROTECTIVE ARMOR ITEMS (WEARABLES)
sponsor:
land impact 20 (if more, show a photo)
prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000
New Babbage is a dangerous place, you need to wear protection. It may be industrial, tactical, or something else entirely.
Rez on designated tables in front section of exhibit hall.
Ah, this is going to be fun! I’d like to sponsor this category, please.
absolutely, sir!
Congratulations to Tepic Harlequin for designing the perfect entry for the protective wear competition, good for both combat and naps! Thanks, Tepic!
An thank you, Mr Aberdon, it’s saved me many a knock!
BRIDGES
sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
land impact: 15
prizes: L$ 5000/4000/3000/2000
The steel bridge near the front of the exhibit hall is looking dated and needs replacing. Canal breach is 11m, bridges can be made for an 11 or 12m breach. Incidentally, the layout of the exhibit hall recalls that Wheatstone Waterways was inaccessible by foot until after the first Oiling Festival. May be needing some new bridges besides what has been identified for replacement after the exhibit hall is derezzed.
Rez bridges at the front and middle canal breaches of the exhibit hall.
SOUVENIR SNOW GLOBES
sponsor: Maggie Lynwood
land impact: 30 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
One of the most popular entries at the first Oiling Festival was a souvenir snow globe with a miniature of city hall inside. In honor of 10 years on the grid, we need more snow globes for our street vendors and wretched urchins to hock to the tourists. Scene should be from the city or lore environs.
Rez on designated table in exhibit hall
STICK PINS
sponsor:
land impact: 10 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
You know, those things you wear on your lapel. They might commemorate something, show membership in an organization, just be something whimsical, or something else entirely.
Rez on display cushion on designated table in exhibit hall.
SUNDRIES
sponsor:
land impact: 10 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
What do we buy at the corner store in this town? Show it!
Rez on designated tables in front section the exhibit hall.
TOURISM POSTER (2D)
sponsor:
land impact: 1
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
It’s been a loooong time since we’ve done this one. Too long. Let’s get some new ones.
Rez on back wall of the exhibit hall behind the bar.
SHIPPING CRATES
sponsor: Lady Sumoku
land impact: 5 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
As a city of industry, there is plenty to ship in and out of the ports. We ALWAYS need new crates to clutter up the streets, and most of the old ones were sculpts. This is one of those things we can never have enough of.
Stack crates in designated section in back section of exhibit hall.
Imports and exports, so think of things we need, and not just what we want to get rid of.
So the 30,000 crates of chocolate brownies with hazelnuts AND peacan nuts with added chocolate fudge sauce and dark, milk and white chocolate chips are OK then?
Yes, but it only counts as one entry. :P
Dadgummit, I didn’t realize I had to do judging. WHOOPS!
First is going to Scottie Melnik, for the grungiest, Babbagey-ist of the crates. $3000
Second is going to Violet Solano, for VOLUME. $2000
Third is going to Azura Kitty (Loring), for most adorable logo picture. $1000
I only see three entries, so if you left one and pulled it up later thinking I saw it by now, let me know.
FIRE HYDRANTS
sponsor:
land impact: 10 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Fire hydrants can be wall or street mounted. Rez in designated area and pillar in front section of exhibit hall.
DRAINPIPES AND DOWNSPOUTS
sponsor:
land impact: 5 per item
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Face it folks, nothing looks as fake as perfectly flat buildings. That’s why we love having bits and bobs to stick onto them to give more depth. Everyone loves a good drainpipe. Especially cat burglars and other thieves.
Rez on designated wall in back section of exhibit hall.
Two takers on this one.
1st- Kimika Ying. both entries were similar and included a sidewalk drain, it was the sidewalk drain that made the decision. I prefered the texture on Miss Ying’s object.
2nd- Artful Hammer
Now make a mix and match set and get them on marketplace! it’s the little details that make a build stand out.
Yay! Thank you so much. I have put this up on the Marketplace and it includes 45 and 90 degree bends which were not incluced in the free version. If you feel inclined to buy a kit you can make all manner of crazy building drains. :)
CALLING CARDS
sponsor:
land impact: 1
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Calling Cards were a social necessity in our day, so everyone should have one, right? Let’s see them! This is not limited to actual avatars, you may create fictional residents of the city.
Rez cards on designated tables in front section of the exhibit hall.
I suggested this, so I can sponsor it.
This was tough! But, I’ve finally reached my decisions.
First place: Captain Killian for the Babbage-touched design for Count Kalimari.
*Very* close second place: Edda Borrelly for her beautiful card.
Third place: Sir John Killigrew
Fourth place: Sir Sir Emerson Lighthouse
And thank you to all who participated!
Thanks, I’ll distribute the prizes
Oh! I already did that.
FAKE BUILDINGS
sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
land impact: how low can you go?
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
The problem with maintaining a city scape is that when there’s too much sky showing, or too much empty land, folks start getting… nervous. That’s when you need a low prim fake to put in the empty space next to the building you actually do use to fill in the street and keep things tight.
Build some fakes. Slums? Shops? Rowhouses? Warehouses? Something else? Pick something. Fake buildings normally have no interiors, but that’s up to you. Build full size.
Note Bene: “Crackerbox” style buildings will be rejected. We don’t do that anymore. (and yes, i know there are still a few standing here and there around town, all of them very old).
Rez on the lower rampart in Quarry Hill in some semblance of a street layout.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Quarry%20Hill/168/102/100
1st – Victorian Magic at 14 prims, offered a nicely detailed full mesh front facade with a semi-functional interior. narrow enough to fill a gap in a lot while keeping a back yard free for something else.
2nd – Azura Kitty at 13 prims, had a narrow row style build wtih real windows and a semi-functional 2 level interior. Nice becuase it could fill a gap between a functional build and the property line to close in a street.
3rd – MacKnight Culdesac at 13 prims. Very basic with sloped roof and no interior that was narrow enough to use as filler to close in a street.
HM – Scottie Melnik at 22 prims. The Port Baron offered a big square “lot filler” with a ground floor facade, nicely contoured exterior all around, and no interior. Good for plunking down on a big bare space when someone moves out of a 1024×1024 so the neighborhood doesn’t get too much sunshine while waiting for the next resident.
ELEVATED RAIL (Infrastructure Replacement)
sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
land impact: be reasonable
prizes: L$ 5000/4000/3000/2000
The iconic 42 prim uprights on the elevated tracks in Babbage Canals have a “true impact” of over 1500. They gotta go. Will be looking for a replacement that keeps the drama of the originals. Distance LOD is important. Presentation can be as a kit – uprights, tracks, undertrack supports, access ladders, etc.
Place entries parallel to existing tracks on designated lot.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Babbage%20Canals/60/158/106
Two takers for this one, so they will split the unclaimed purses.
1st – MacKnight Culdesac. Mr C chose to use the existing tracks as a model, taking the uprights to 13 land impact and the spans to 10 impact, and also provided a glass street elevator for stops. He will be replacing the main railway from the rise near Jefferson & Brunel in Babbage Square to Bow Street Station in the Canals. I would request the texture to be darkened, the standing textures are tinted.
2nd – Scottie Melnik. “Baron” Melnik chose a steel cased stone stack for the risers and a twin steel girder span straddled by open sleepers which will make for interesting lighting effects. He will be replacing the rail extension to Iron Bay, from the “Brew Thru” build in Babbage Square to the terminus in New Babbage sim. He is allowed to knock down the brew thru in the process.
Congratulations, Engineers! These are the last of the original Sprocket era prims standing on dry land and I had turned down a few replacement proposals over the years. The NTBA boys may have to adjust the trolley beacons once things are settled.
Let’s try to get everything swapped before Bonfire Weekend on Nov. 11.
WATER TOWERS
sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
land impact: 15 max rooftop, 25 max freestanding
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Because we need more hardware on the skyline! Clutter it up. Or maybe Tenk has been watching too much Daredevil on Netflix. I know you can do better than some of what is on marketplace.
Place entries at Central Cemetary back lot. Place all entries on the ground.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Babbage%20Square/254/78/106
1st – Scottie Melnik for his detailed traditional wood and strap rooftop tower that would look good on any building from here to New York City. It’s set for sale at the moment, so get one before it gets derezzed.
2nd – Loki Eliot for his freestanding brick tower
3rd – Violet Solano. I wasn’t too crazy about the textures on this one, but a tip of the toque for over-engineering it.
Honorable Mention – MacKnight Culdesac, for a humble but solid rooftop model
Mayor’s Choice for Humor – Silas Merlin, for his truly frightening alien ensemble.. my first thought was that the Martians were back, or maybe they are. Are these intended to lure them in? Will they hatch? Are they sentient? I am filled with dread…
Also entered – Tepic Harlequin with a well thought out fire safety tank of dubious durability.
OVERHEAD LIGHTING
sponsor:
land impact 20 or less
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Ya know, it’s kind of dark in the exhibit hall. I need some lighting over the tables.
Hang entries on the low girders in the front section of the exhibit hall
VISAS
sponsor: Scottie Melnik (acting Port Babbage Customs Master)
land impact: 1
prizes: L$3000/2000/1000/500
Since the Old Empire collapsed, travel has been… well, not as easy as it used to be. We want to see the stamps we would collect in our passports as we travel about. This is where you get to make up stuff on the map that might work its way into the lore.
Rez on table in front section of exhibit hall.
Due to summer travel plans, RFL weekend, solar eclipse, and many other distractions, let’s make the deadline August 31st because that’s easy to remember, then judging done through the following weekend.
Huzzah! More time to get these @#!*%&! scripts to work!
