PSA: Smarter Window Meshes

The mesh is getting better, but the windows are getting worse. when you build a wall, leave the  windows empty to be fitted in later. It will probaly be cheaper that way.

When you make a window mesh, start with a picture
of a frickin’ window. Now build the frames over that, using the pictures as a guide. You’ll get the subtle shadings on the glass and grime
around the edges that are hard to fake if you start with the right
image. This is your highest LOD upload.

The trick to low impact mesh is simplification of low and lowest LOD uploads.

The picture of your window will be the 1 prim flat shape you upload as the low and/or
lowest LOD, the other texture you used for the frames and such are
cleverly hidden on the edges of the flat or, inside (because chances are you’ll be too close to see lowest lod if you are inside the building).

Now instead of collapsing when you pull back, it snaps to a flat texture. The window is still a frickin’ window because simplification.

Too many buildings are looking like
what you used to see looking up from cross bronx expressway in the 1980s
at a distance. you’ll get the subtle shadings on the glass and grime
around the edges that are hard to fake if you start with the right
image.

We also need to get rid of those empty pane frames that are left
over from the scultpy style of doing things. quit making those!
