1. the act or an instance of motivating, or providing with a reason to act in a certain way.
There’s more of them. They won’t trust me enough to follow me to the surface, even when they could see I was bringing meat from the cow from the street.
==> What have do they usualy eat?
Junie and E. bought airworks. Momoe, Kaylee, and sometimes Njalli with me at the Plank.
What motivates more, what is needed for survival or pleasure?
Dunsany ==> meat
Emerson, Junie ==> hookah leaf
Bertie ==>
When does pleasure supercede survival? <—Does it? <?vice versa>
Lapis likes Momoe? Njal? ==> women??? (why didn’t I see that sooner?)
–survival override?
archimedian state – truth or legend?
*find James

Emerson looked up from the paper he was lazily reading over coffee at the bar when Junie came through the front doors of The Gangplank. He maintained his smile though he noted a troubled look furrowing her brow.
“Em,” she began tentatively. “Have you looked at the books recently?”
Emerson paused waiting for the punchline. Once he realized none would be forthcoming he tipped his head quizzically.
“I just happened to glance at them.” Junie continued. “I do that from time to time, mainly because I love Martin’s fine script. But I noticed we ordered triple the coal this winter from what we ordered last winter.”
“Maybe he is expecting it to be extra cold this season.” Emerson shrugged.
“You are probably right.” Junie sighed. “I’m just worried, he seems to have been acting a bit… erratic since the incident underground this past summer.”
“Well, he is a teen-ager. They are supposed to be a little erratic, perhaps even irresponsible from time to time.” said Emerson reaching for his hookah and satchel of leaf. “We’ll keep an eye on him.” Emerson added, drawing deeply on the hose and coughing once. “Make sure he doesn’t get himself into any mischief.”
*suddenly envisions Martin and Emerson in Victor’s Benz, flying over a hillock on the Fells in slow motion, faces lit by expressions of pure glee*
Does that mean that one of them will be sitting beside the pool later, comatose, when they see the odometer?
