I’ve been shamefully neglectful of this journal this year, I’m afraid. But then, there really hasn’t been much to write about. This has to be one of the quiestest stretches of time in the city since I came here! I don’t think I’ve truly had to put on my militia uniform once since the year started.
Not to say, though, that I haven’t been busy. There have been monthly Salons to assist with, monthly balls to photograph, and fundraisers to organize (with varying degrees of success). And, this past week, preparing for traveling.
I shall be leaving Saturday to travel to America to visit my family, and then to join some friends in traveling to the Southwest region. It will be wonderful indeed to see those marvelous sights again, after so long! I’m very much looking forward to it!
Not without a bit of trepidation, however. I’d heard that Dr. Obolensky was building up his complex in the Vernian Deep, and yesterday evening, I took the firefighting ship out to get a closer look. Not too close, though, as rumor had it he has gun emplacements defending it all. My binoculars showed me that he has, indeed, spread well into the Deep area, with both ship and airship platforms, as well as a platform with a giant Smashington. (Can it fly, I wonder? Or is it waterproof?) This is a worrying development, but whatever he’s doing, I don’t believe he’s completed it. So hopefully, he won’t try anything against the city while I am gone.
No. I mustn’t let such considerations sour my trip. Time to put him out of mind for a few weeks!
