-Jekyll Writes- A Dangerous Con: The Doctor’s Lament

-From the private journal of Dr. Henry Jekyll-

July 14th, 188X

This investigation has gone too far. Hyde’s plan ended in
disaster; two men injured, one of them in critical condition. Miss
Domino’s blade had pierced Mr. Quillman to the bone in two places,
and he had lost a lot of blood. It will take at least a few weeks for
him to recover.

Wright worries me. He came into the operating room as I was
running the X-Rays and asked if I could stall the recovery. I told
him that wouldn’t be sensible at all, seeing the damage, and it
certainly doesn’t help my nerves. It is rather fortunate that Wright
and I were left alone, and we have been keeping each other’s secrets
ever since the incident involving Mr. Eliot. Otherwise he may have
never known my worst fears at the time. At the very least, Wright has
assured me that I, as my own self, did not seem to be involved.

I still have my doubts…

Attempted to speak with Miss Domino while she was in her holding
    cell.

    She didn’t seem to
care too much for my company, though. However, she was more willing
to speak to Mr. Wright, who had apparently wanted to visit as well. I was made to wait outside the door while she asked him about what happened last night. She must have assumed the militia was involved.

She did let me look at a wound, though. A bullet had grazed her arm, but the wound seems to be healing faster than expected. Wright and Domino suspect it may have to do with an alleged “vampire” that has been employed as the militia’s prison guard. I can’t be certain.

At any rate, Domino is showing her usual desire to escape. If I was speaking of any other criminal, I would have disagreed, but Hyde seems to have depreciating pity on her… Or a shared goal. I do not know which.

Our efforts have been in vain! The mess Hyde has roped our friends into has only made things worse for poor Beryl!

Mr. Quillman had died of blood loss last night. We weren”t able to find a suitable blood donor in time. I am attempting to locate his family in Wuldram Shores to offer condolences, but..

Mr. Firecrest also pulled Wright and I aside to deliver his horrid news. Rather than thinning their numbers, the fight only caused Mr. Herding to hire more men. It also seems they’re no longer allowing “regulars” into the brothel, on account of “being too clingy.”

I’ve begun to think otherwise, since Firecrest then mentioned being followed.

For my own safety, I have decided that I will not be directly involved in this mad plan. Furthermore, I will have to keep Hyde at bay, for who knows what more trouble he might cause for the rest of us.

I can tell he is not happy with my decision…

After talking to Myrtil about the letter in the Wax Museum, and her involvement in Beryl’s investigation, I came home to find Mr. Firecrest knocking on my door. He came to warn me about something Wright was plotting, and to share his concerns.

Clearly, Mr. Firecrest had not gotten any decent amount of sleep in three days.  He told me he hasn’t been able to since he had a nightmare involving the gruesome deaths and an ominous raven. (Could this be that same raven from last week?) Poor Firecrest must have been heavily affected by this dream, for not only was he unable to relax, but he also seems to have an unusually adverse reaction to my cat. The only thing I could do for him at the time was to make him some tea, though he really ought to see a psychiatrist.

Mr. Firecrest also asked me to look at a gunshot wound on his right shoulder. Allegedly, he got into a fight with two brothers from the city of Bump, one of the more infamous places in the vicinity of New Babbage. No word on the status of the brothers, other than being “in no state to come after [Mr. Firecrest].” The wound seemed to be cauterized, so I simply applied clean gauze around the area.

I plan to see Wright about his alleged plan of attack. He does have good intentions, but he is rather aggressive in his execution. I wonder if that’s part of his lupine heritage.

I’m not sure if I can take much more of this.

I remember a time where I managed to abstain from Hyde for two months… Leading to a disaster once he was loose.

Here, though, Hyde has managed to not only get involved in various affairs, but he has somehow befriended a few people as well. Kasa and Firecrest have asked about his whereabouts, but I was unable to give them a proper awnser…

    And Beryl…

I can feel Hyde lurking in the shadows of my mind even now. I know he’s planning something horrible or irrational… Possibly both.

It is getting late, I should try and get some rest.

    EVENING (Hell if I know)

Forgive me, Dr. Jekyll, but I prefer to get involved.

You think I would go in without some sort of rational plot? Huh? You worry a lot, I will admit. I tell you this, I am not planning on repeating my mistakes.

Besides, you don’t have to worry about me, I ain’t the only one with
bad ideas. At least most of us managed to get our plans straight thanks
to that leopard kid. Something cunning will be more effective than
brute strength, he said. Something like that.

So yeah, nothing to be fussing over. I’ll even let you have the body back after I finish writing. Trust me, I will be careful in planning my revenge.

    – Hyde

P.S. You can thank Domino for being the straw that broke the camel’s back. She seems to have some secrets of her own we can blackmail her with if she squeals. You remember the detais, I bet.
