The 2016 Oiling Festival

Welcome to the 8th Annual New Babbage Oiling Festival, our version of Spring Cleaning. We hope you will have time to visit.. and build!

The original Oiling Festival was held in 2009 to add needed items to the city inventory and invite the greater steamlands to experience the Babbage way of life.  All good citizens and visiting steamlanders are encouraged to roll up their sleeves, show their national pride,  and participate!

The Festival is now open. Building stops at midnight on APRIL 2nd.

You may use any building technique at your disposal, althought sculpts will be barred from categories that are intended to be added to city inventory.. I encourage building in place to encourage sharing information and techniques, it helps everyone become a better builder.

And don’t forget to put what you build on Marketplace so we can all enjoy it for years to come. (Not to mention that sales help you stay on your land, which keeps the city rezzed! you only have to list it once!)

Judging and walk around to admire the results will take place on Sunday, APRIL 3rd..

This years categories are:

    CITY HALL MODELS
    sponsor: Mosseveno Tenk
land impact: 100. Don’t prim the dang sim out. You know who you are.
    prizes: L$ 5000/4000/3000

City Halls have an average lifespan of 2 years. The foundations of the standing build have been found to be unstable so it is time for a new one before the old one collapses under its own weight. Use the provided 1/10 scale mockup of the lot to build a model on. Finished full size build should be around 500 prims, so it can be lavishly furnished. There’s a lot of memrobilia to display.

So that there is not the usual argument about textures, the interior should be done in the gold metals and rich browntones. Use a steampunkesque palette. Absolutely not blue tones. If you know what the inside of a really big reduction gear looks like, that’s the color.

If you are SERIOUS about actually building a new city hall in a timely manner, should your model be chosen, color the base BLUE. If you are just messing around and having fun with it, color the base of your model RED. We miss having a working city hall.

It needs some rugs for unicorns and other unusually sized folk to sit on.

You would not believe how many splinters the floor has in the Bucket, and the smell! I think people die in there. *nods*

We really need more comfortable sitting arangements for our meetings.

      1st -Jimmy Branagh

      2nd -Elizabeth Jarvinen

Tough call on the top 2. I had to stare at them a while to find a deciding factor. In this case, it was a negative one. Lizzy’s building had a distinctly mosque-like profile from a distance. Not that I have anything against muslims, but every building tells a story and it’s telling the wrong one. It would have been a fun building to explore! I would like to see some more height on Jimmy’s building, the central clocktower may need to be raised so it stands out in the skyline, and it might also make a good airship mooring point.

3rd – Nathaniel Lorefield. Good solid design, and although the interior wasn’t finished, looked like there would be a large central area, keeping the galleries to the side as in Cleanslate’s city hall. Would have made an interesting dispay area for large exhibits and inventions.

Seriously, have you ever gone shopping for cemetery furnishings on Marketplace? Let’s fix that. Bonus points if you can actually apply a name to the stone without sticking an extra prim on it. Now that we have mesh, that shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

Rez inside Babbage Square Central Cemetery, back lot. Not Silas Merlin’s lot, which is also a cemetery.

1st – Dee Wells-Dagger for the incredibly detailed set of headstones and celtic cross. Excellent mesh work!

2nd – Myrtil Igaly for the elaborate headstone with chains and planter. Very appropriate for the era.

3rd – Miko & Edward Pearse for the family mauseleum. Not sure how to call this, since it wasn’t placed by the builder, but it is an impressive piece.

HM – Jaiden Magic for the scripted fate. Sorry Jaiden, it didn’t do anything when I touched it.

Mayor’s Choice for Humor – Kimika Ying for the dead parrot.

There’s a certain sense of awe one gets when watching a monumental engine go through its paces – whether it’s the massive pistons of an ocean liner’s engine room or the elegant, massive power of a beam engine pumping water. So build one – it does’t matter what it does, but it should move, be noisy, and be huge. An HBM will fit on a 25×25 meter platform and have a land impact of no more than 100.  Entry limited to platforms available. One entry per person. Build only on city provided platform, rez prim on platform to claim. IM Mosseveno Tenk if you need more platforms.

    LIGHTHOUSE
    sponsor:
    land impact: 25
    prizes: L$ 3000/2000/1000

The old lighthouse in Clockhaven harbor is stupidly primmy. Build a new one that will fit at the end of the breakwater.  Selected entry will be added to city inventory.

Rez in wet dock where the Rookswood Brewery used to be in Port Babbage. There is a copy of the current lighthouse base nearby so you can check your scale.

    • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk April 26, 2016

Bugger this is a hard one. These were all good, and only 2 made it under the prim guidance, but since mesh has entered Oiling Festival the prim allowances are more goals to shoot for rather than hard rules.

1st -Myrtil Igaly. What I really liked was the entrance. She took the existing foundations an breakwater into consideration and incorporated it into the design so it should be a seamless replacement for Rip Wirefly’s original lighthouse, but now we’ll be able to climb the inside. I would prefer that the light cones be removed, those look silly to me considering how far we’ve come in what we can build now.

2nd -Nathaniel Lorefield. This solid grungy number reminds me of some of the offshore lights on the Chesapeake Bay. Very credible design, though not decorative enough the old harbor.

3rd – Dee Wells-Dagger. A very elegant shape with a slow rotating light. I found the textures on the main body of the tower to be a little strange, but I’m guessing that’s the trade off for the intersting shape of it. And yes, I know I did goad you into building it at the last minute.

HM – Momoe. Sorry Momoe, but at 65 impact I can’t place this one higher. This is an absolutely gorgeous piece of building and you should finish it!

There are people out there that really like lighthouses. You should put these on marketplace, all of you!

    ROBOT SENTINELS
sponsor: Steadman Kondor and the Quarry Hill School of Mines & Industries.
    land impact: 10 or less
prizes: L$ 6000 to be shared with top 3 entries

The old clockwork sentinels at the city gate are primmy old sculpts, and when you link one to a mesh block to see what the true accounting of it is, well, it’s just too high. And they’re starting to look mushy. Build us some new ones that are not so prohibitively expensive to rez so we can display more of them, make official or civilian models for home and business. Bonus if they come with a texture set to change the colors & costumes. Selected items may be added to city inventory.

Correction: This is not a L6000 prize pool where one winning entry gets the entire loot. L3000, L2000, L1000 prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd entries. If the top three entries are of similar wonderful merit, however, judges reserve the right to award equal prize money to all three… ie. L2000. If there is only one wonderful entry, then only the 1st prize may be awarded. Thank you :)

    • Steadman Kondor Steadman Kondor April 28, 2016

We had three entries though one was withdrawn – a charming prim build that was over the limit. We do wish the creator had allowed it to remain!

1st prize went to Tepic Harlequin for the versatile set of weaponed sentinels

2nd prize went to Kaylee Frye for the charming steampunk robot

Thank you both for your excellent and inspired entries!

The creator is a friend and associate of mine and while he did not intend to remove the submission, its disappearance somewhat puzzling to him as it was located on the bottom of the harbor, he is quite delighted and touched to have been awarded a ribbon for the effort. He is honored and accepts the compliment, considering it was substantially over the prim limit. It is a sentimental piece, his first building effort, created for one of Doc O’s old Christmas Tree competition as a children’s toy a long time ago…
