“Down in the Air” or “Angel Upside Down” are variants of a children’s street rhyme. There are several versions, but the basic rhyme is thus:
Wots an angel upside down in the air
With his hair gone crazy, and his eyes so fair
One by one; they fall like pinecones
Two by two; they ride the mare
Down to the ground, inside out
Swim if you can, cause there’s no one about
Wots the moon spin dizzy down in the air
With night turned day, and round gone square
One by one; the angel dances
Two by two; they ride the mare
Down to the ground, inside out
Swim if you can, cause there’s no land about!
”All Fall Down!”
A girl’s clapsong variant goes thus:
Angel upside down in the air
Hair gone crazy, eyes so fair.
One by one, fall down stairs.
Two by two, ride the mares.
Three by three, say your prayers,
Here comes the priest to check your squares.
Down on the ground, inside out.
Swim if you can ’cause there’s no land about.
