I had an interesting encounter today on the Vernian Docks with a chap claiming to be from some far off land of “Arcania,” or “Arcanum.” I was too polite to inquire after his business in New Babbage, and he was not forthcoming on the subject. I am left with the sense that he is an exile, or an émigré of some sort. He is constructing a kind of “Ark,” which, by all appearances, seems outfitted for both sea and sky! Perhaps he will use it to return to this mysterious homeland of his.

While touring his ship, I asked after the power source, and happened to mention in passing my own inquiries into extracting galvanic currents from seawater. In response, he proffered me a miniaturized example of the “re-actor” he asserts will provide the power necessary to operate his construct. Most intrigued, I have set it out on my workbench, and intend to proceed with a closer examination of his more fanciful claims, when I find the time.

Despite these distractions, I have managed to complete the construction of the occupant’s compartment of my “Space Gun.” This compartment will comprise the “projectile” to be fired from the giant barrel. With the help of my Autobot, I have just now emplaced the bullet into the assembled cannon.

The calculations are complete. The charges are set. Can a closer observation of the surface of the Moon provide answers to the origins of the mysterious rocket? What may we learn of the history of Earth’s enigmatic neighbor? Only time will tell….

Uhm, once this “bullet” strikes the surface of the moon, how do you propose to return? the “gun” is still on the earth…or do you merely plan to fly the moom and return in flight?

hmmmm…. one of our engineers has his hands on a reactor he don’t understand but finds intriguing… he’s about to fire a big canon, that’s loaded up with a lot of high explosives…. both these seem to indicate a large area of New Babbage is about to become flatland….

”blinks” Um, someone in the House of Mureaux just handed you an atomic reactor? Did it at least come with a user’s manual?

What could possibly go wrong?! *wide-eyed*

The intended trajectory for the projectile calls for it to orbit the moon once, and then return to the Earth in the waters of Iron Bay. While reasonably certain of the calculations myself, I had really wished for representatives of the Church to review the mathematics , but the fathers have been strangely absent of late.

As for the “re-actor;” a cursory review indicates that it is comprised at its heart of a strangely luminescent metal or heavy ore. My working assumption is that the exchange of ions from the ore must be the basis of a chemical reaction that generates the galvanic current. Perhaps its inducted through the odd bronze alloy that forms the container.

Regardless, it’s quite obvious from the diminutive size of the curio that it poses no real danger, certainly. I’d be surprised if it were even sufficient to induce the convulsions in amputated frog’s legs that the misguided re:animators such as the notorious Mr. Footman routinely go on so about…

I did see Father Pizzaro last week, . . ah I forget when. It was after the reading of that play.. was it The Exorcist? I forget. Ah, anyway, that’s the last time I’ve seen either of them.

This does sound interesting. . potentially quite explosively so.

I think that if I’m back then I’ll watch through the glasses.
