A happy, cheery, affluent town with tacky architecture that surrounds a brutal, hellish, largely subterranean prison full of murderers, madmen and incorrigible master criminals. Once a significant source of imperial iron, the town now makes buckets of money by incarcerating the worst of the worst convicts from any country willing to pay. Most citizens spend at least one year as a prison guard and some travel the world transferring prisoners to town. By the time they reach primary school, the town’s children have already had instruction in several forms of armed and unarmed combat. No prisoner has ever escaped and every prisoner who dies while incarcerated is given a Builder’s burial regardless of their crime (or what religion they actually practiced). Many successful stage actors got their start in one of Gaulthes’ renowned community theaters.
