Where In New Babbage Did You Originally Land?

I landed at the end of Jefferson Street, where the old Dagon Temple was.

I was looking through different stempunk sims, but stopped at Babbage.  I couldn’t believe it just kept going and going, each building just as stunning as the last.

    I never left.

On the cog at old Babbage Square. for some reason I always landed at night. to this day i keep my lights at midnight unless working.
I found her searching the map after hearing the name in a stray comment in a random group i had joined, people seemed surprised that a stranger had found it. First time i had ever seen non-grass terrain. it was stunning.

I’d heard of New Babbage . . I forget where. I searched and found it and looked at the map for a place to land. I landed in the alley right behind the CocoaJava. It was winter and there was a pile of coal there.

I think I’d brought an alt through here before on a hunt at one time but I don’t think Gaby had been here ’til then.

I landed in Clockhaven on the waterfront just next to Tinus’ shop.  I did a search for “steampunk” and picked it out from near the top of the list.  Wandered and found the Gangplank, with Kaylee and Tenk sitting inside.  Then Mr. Underby appeared and told me where to find men’s clothing (though he turned out to be wrong).
It took me a while before I realized that there was more than one sim, and they were all next to each other, and they all had the same theme!  Things usually don’t work that way in the furry SL world.

Eggberta’s cafe (which doesn’t exist anymore) back when it was at the very edge of the world in Babbage and the Kahruvel Steamworks was at the opposite corner of the world.  It sure was easier to find my way around town back when that was as far as you could go.

Every time I came to Babbage at first to visit Loki’s Theater and store fronts (and other urchiny stores) I always landed at the Babbage Square end of the train station.

I couldn’t believe how large and dark Babbage was (or how huge Caledon was for that matter) but at the time I never really felt I had a place in SL. It wasn’t really until a year ago that I felt I had a place here.

I first found New Babbage coming to BlakOpal’s old store in the New Babbage sim (the same parcel I currently own, ironically enough). At the time I hadn’t heard of New Babbage, and I kept looking over the wall across the sludge canal at the industrial buildings below and thought “some’s put a lot of work into this.”

I kept coming back to BlakOpal’s over the next few months, and started seeing the name New Babbage all over the place in SL search(and especially on YouTube). I finally decided to come back and make a serious effort to explore the place; I spent three days exploring the city, and I have been here ever since.

I landed on the docks, Summer of 2007.  After that, I returned to that landing point a few times a week and would take off in various directions to explore.   I often ended up in Eggy’s Willow Tea Room, and would sit and soak up the ambiance there.

When my home sim (Disturbing World) vanished, I moved to New Babbage and became the first tenant in Her Dark Materials.

Ruby’s Pub, when it was the original structure built by Salazar Jack. I camped on the docks to the East, where an old ironclad was anchored. (behind where the fire house is now). New Babbage was just The Canal District and Babbage Square back then, and still at original Linden sea level.

Book! You don’t know what that picture means!  I’m standing in the background, that was the night Scottie and I met (the beginning of a long friendship!).  *does a little dance!* look at that!

      • Scottie Melnik Scottie Melnik August 18, 2010

That is incredible! Between this (thank you Book!), the balloon invite for that particular dance (thank you Breezy!) and a wonderful, lasting friendship that was sparked that night (thank you Star!) it would seem I have a rather complete set of cherished memories.

It’s funny how something that easily could have been a footnote in my travels ended up as a full-blown obsession. I guess Babbage has a way of doing that sometimes.

(Oh, and I still keep the balloon up in my lab floating along the ceiling.)

That’s true!  Our reigning queen of roleplay, Miss Book, had her first roleplay experience trying to talk a delirious, frothing at the mouth Ceejay off the roof of Her Dark Materials. Where I was waving a gun.

It was too long ago for me to remember correctly, certainly for my first year in SL I spent most of my time as a vagabond explorer and visited so many regions that they became a blur!
I do recall a square with a magic lantern show in one of the buildings near by. I remember the dust sparkling in the light of the lantern. But that is about it.

    • Gabriell Anatra Gabriell Anatra August 18, 2010

I’ve spent some time falling into and getting out of walls and sewers since I arrived here. I’ve found that running will do it every time, I slow to walk at crossings and it happens much less often.

I recall seeing a pic of a wiggyfish that Mayor Tenk had found under a canal wall.

You were on the wait-and-see list after some ‘i don’t know if this guy is a perv or a griefer or what but maybe you might want to keep an eye on him’ IM’s from a some women in Palisades. Underby’s original presentation was a succession of identical men that had no previous knowledge of the one you’d met a few minutes ago. He kept trying to lure the urchin boys into the Dagon Temple. Waaaaaay back in the dark recesses of time Babbage was mostly inhabited by scripters and builders. There used to be Town Meetings every few months and at one point (possibly mid 2007?) someone suggested a dance be held in Babbage. This was voted down at the meeting.

I think a lot was probably in reaction to places like Steelhead, which still has it’s weekly Friday dance, and Caledon (then working on about 15-20 sims) who had a fairly active Social Calendar. Babbage had almost no RP at that point either. It was a “serious steampunk sim”(TM).

  37. Osric Worbridge Osric Worbridge August 19, 2010

I landed in Babbage Square. (It was always night for me as well.) If I remember correctly Kaylee was sitting on a wall. She was the first person I met in NB. The second was Shaun, who was still Mayor. Every visit I always seemed to gravitate to a building with a glass front. I believe it had banners for the academy and big banners of the teachers of the academy. I defiantly remember a larger than life Salazar Jack on one of the banners. I wondered why he was blue.

    • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk August 19, 2010

That was the information center, you’ve been around longer than i thought if you remember that! There was a city map embedded in the floor tiles and a vertical banner slideshow of citizens in giant cutouts against a white background. My fave build was the Steamed Palette.

I’m sorry to say the very first Babbage citizens I met aren’t here anymore and haven’t been for sometime, and I’m sorry to say I can’t even remember their full names anymore.  One was the owner of of Unity Hall, and the other was an Admiral who was ALWAYS in character.  They both had parcels in The Port.  Then, when I came back to Babbage to settle the first person I met was Slender Means (a great/fun character who is also now long gone), closely followed by Mr. Dagger, and Django Yifu.

I became a Real Boy because my first account could not stay in Babbage Square more than 10 mintues without locking up. The lot was acutaly bought for me to live in (as a retired airship pirate hiding from his past) once my developement phase was over, as I was being kept confined to my home sim until I “grew up.” I had a difficult personality settling, my name saved me from deletion.

#1 was planning to live in Caledon. Oddly, when he lost his home in a homestead switch, he was the one that came to Babbage and I went to a lot in Caledon Penzance on embassy row.

Ah, the Gaslight Emporium was my introduction as well.  My employee, Mr Underwood, of Caledon, informed me of New Babbage and I followed his suggestion.  It was last winter, snowing.  Delightful first impressions with the one exception of coming across the evidence of a murder in the snow adjacent to City Hall.  A bit distastful but there was the promise of “gritty”, neh?  I was delighted, and explored and wandered, still a wonderful memory of revelation and discovery!

  46. Jasper Kiergarten Jasper Kiergarten August 28, 2010

I think the first place I ever visited was Kandace’s old lighthouse in the Vernian, where Doc O’s observatory now rests. That was winter ’07. First settled in the Port, in the corner behind the Mermaid Arcade. This would have been a few months later, in early ’08.

It was just the Canals, Sqaure, Port and the Vernian then. The Palisades was there very soon after though.

i used to sit on tiny tin’s shoulder, for hours… simply staring out to sea…

one day, a whole year ago, a giant spider chased me… at first i climbed away and ran hither and thither… but then i stood my ground and stared at it rather fiercely, saying, you are not so scary!…  and then it turned into an enormous eel and swam away…

and so then i swam after it, rather recklessly i am sure… then, when i reached dry land… at clockhaven, rather near the gangplank i think… i saw a terribly pale gentleman in a top hat… i thought perhaps he may have been able to shapeshift… so i quite boldly asked him to teach me how!…

and that is how i learnt of roleplay.

since this thread showed up i was thinking where i droped from the sky. i think i was looking for a (any) nautilus submarine after visiting caledon several times and TPed somewhere near the town hall into empty snowy streets on 17th of december 2007 (i only know that because i found a screenshot from that day). while ice skating around the only green dot near me turned out to be mister dagger who offered a guided tour through new babbage. the rest is “visited-rented-bought”.

I think I wound up at the port, first. I had been a reader of steampunk novels starting with Difference Engine, so I did a search for “Babbage” and wound up there. It wasn’t the first Steamland I visited. Caledon or Steelhead I visited first.

My first reaction was “Wow this place is really messy. I love it.”
