Such an odd event occurred last night. I was in the Gangplank having a glass of milk when I noticed Master Pocket *in* the fireplace. Needless to say, I considered this highly unusual. Not many creatures can withstand being in a fire for long. I politely asked the apparition if it was Mr. String and received a reply in a language I could not understand. After asking for the whereabouts of the Clockwinder and Miss Maggie, Miss Netizen was kind enough to stop by and confirm what I was seeing. In a short period of time several other citizens also appeared and all saw what I had. Sadly, none of them understood the language either. Mr. Mornington hazarded a guess it might be a Hob dialect but could offer no further insight.
I tried an invocation but nothing occurred, not an acknowledgement but then again not a refusal either. Just…nothing. Could it be that he was not dead? I have heard that Mr. String had lapsed into a coma shortly after touching Mr. Footman’s device and I have seen the body as it lay in the Clockwinder’s apartment. I have also heard that he has been moved to an unknown location for safety. Pity…
After Mr. String finished speaking he vanished. The occult specialists that were there at the time tried to get a lock on him but were unsuccessful. Mr Spires lent me his notebook and I wrote down what the apparition spoke. Thank goodness for all the times that the monks made me memorize chants and then repeat them back days later! So I have something to show the Clockwinder if I bump into him. I also owe Mr. Spires his notebook back as it looks like it is brand new and he is most likely missing it dearly.
It was odd. Normally something like this, a person within a fire speaking a strange language, would mean that they were dead. However, I could get no indication that it ever heard or saw me. I know Mr. String is not human; I wonder if that means he exists in a different space than the ones that I am used to working in? Time to consult the notes and scrolls in my temple room. Perhaps I can even get a hint as to what language it was speaking. At least I now have a day bed to recline upon instead on doing all that reading on my knees….
