The Plague that Mornington Didnt Cause

Mornington stodd in the newly completed Hawksley Water Pump House just next to what was The Gut and watched the beam engines slowly rise and fall and listened with intent to the distinct window rattling *BOOM* that emerges from the over sized piston cylinders as each upstroke started.

“Pearse is gonna hate that piston stroke…its almost deafening”

The piston engines was oversized….for a reason.

For the past 3 days of operation, one engine of the pair had been collecting canal water and pumping it stright directly into the sewer system, over 500,000 imperial gallons…per day.  The sewers below the New Babbage district was of an older thinner tunnel diameter and no one ever ventured down there, the sewer connected directly to Port, Clockhaven and the entire ‘wet’ sewer network.  For three days, at half a million gallons a day that single pump worked relentlessly.

Mornington seen the result on the several large offshore sewer pipe ends.  Large floating masses of filth was floating far into the sea, rats had abandoned the partially flooded sewer system and headed for the pallisade wall and out into the North Fells.  It was the cleanest the sewer network had been for probably a decade or so.  Mornington smiled as he patted the piston cylinder of No.2 engine as it continued to pump the canal water into the sewers for one final day.  Once final day of scouring out the dead waste matter, one final day of getting rid of anything and everything which could cause another outbreak of the plague of which the blame for the outbreak had landed firmly on Morningtons shoulder, for two years in a row.  If there was any remnants of the plaguye from last year, it was now washed far out into sea.

Mornington had lit a Cigar and just as he was feeling secure in the knowledge that an outbreak for this year would be practicaly impossible…the voice of Underby shouting “Mornington!” echoed in the pump house…

“Ohhhhhhhhhhh shi *BOOM*….now what”

Mornington turned round to look at old Underby…and Underby smiled.

“I know ytouve been flooding out the sewers Mornington…even if it isnt a total flood and only a partial one, trying to clean them out are you?”

“Listen Underby, Mr Tenk decided to put a full out ban on me inporting any large unopened crates into the city for the ENITRE month of October.  The WHOLE month!”

Underby laughed… “Such an inconvenience for you isn’t it?  Sitting up there in your big hotel with your rich clientele and slowly running out of all that posh grub you serve.”

Mornington quietly seethed.

“Why are you here Underby, spit it out.”

“Well Mornington…the plague has been seen in the City Again.”

Mornington stood wide eyed as Underby broke the news.  Apparently some Doctor in Clockhaven decided to “innoculate” everyone.  And some of the people who took the injection was showing symptoms of a plauge simmilar to the same one which had infected New Babbage fore the past two years.

It was back, and this time Mornington and Elleon had nothing to do with it…

…and that worried Mornington…a lot.

((for the folks who are wondering, the main story line of this plague run is being done by Jimmy and Mr Tenk from what i have been told.  Myself and Elleon aint running World Zombie Day in New Babbage this year)

    NBS Scylla
    Vernian Sea

Jed stood on the aft deck of the ship, looking out over the expanse of deep water out from the city. She had decided that “Big Sister 1” needed some sea time, and it felt good to take a turn out at patrol.

That was of course short lived as the forward watch began to scream about an island off in the distance. She ordered all ahead slow and went forward with a long glass to see what was causing the commotion. See would have been preferable to what she smelt as she came forward of Turret 1. It was green like an island, but not with vegetation, and the stench was incredible, even at long cannon range.

The glass told the tale of a very large clump of what could only be described as everything that could have been stuck in a drain for half a century. Even the poor rats that clung to the effusion seemed sick to be there. Jed closed the glass and ordered a turn to give the clump a very wide berth. Lucky for them, it was already in the current and would end up somewhere very far away….
