The Painting – an OOC explanation…

Yes…. /beginkirkimpression EMERSSSSSSOOOOOOONNNNNNNN! /endkirkimpression

The Painting, which first turns up here… http://cityofnewbabbage.online/reader/node/4014

…and then pops up in several stories about Emersons travels and rumors around town.  Apparently the painting is of me, 200 years ago, standing next to the great great great grandmother of The Island where the extremly expensive tobacco for the even more expensive Sagrada Lucia cigars.

Several people asked the question…and its a simple one…

“You went back in time to bail youself out of the Chivas hole, why not go back in time, take the painting so Emerson never finds it?”

Good question but this is where the strict Timelord RP of New Gallifrey (the actual region called New Gallifrey) comes in.

Before Tenk our Clockwinder became Mr Sir Mayor, New Babbage was ran by Mr Sprocket.  About a year before Mr Tenk took over from The Clockwinder deals were stuck between the independant victorian and stemalnd states along with other RP centric or RP light states between the fledgling Timelord RP groups and these states, places like Caledon and New Babbage for instance.

The deal was a simple one, these states are timelocked.  Caledon, New Babbage, Steelhead etc etc are all in a locked state.

Ya see Timelord RP is very, very, very convoluted…VERY convoluted.  Just like the actual TV show, the High Council of Timelords in Second Life like their classic show counterparts, observe…they only step in if something goes horribly wrong.  Its happened only twice, just two times in the 5+ year hostory of Timelord RP when the high council stepped in to stop a full out RP war between two states, the last one in the old sim of Artificial Isle.  There is about 900 odd active timelord roleplayers in Second Life, the vast majority of them part of the New Gallifrey group…of which im a High Council member of.

Because a timeoord can literally go back and change history the rules layed down by the High Council regarding timelocks is a simple one.  Places like New Babbage is “linear”…there is NO way to go back in time in New Babbage to visit its past,  there is a SMALL possibility, with enough power to burn up a sun to visit New Babbages future, but the past is locked, totally and absolutley.

The Painting arrived in New Babbage at the time without my knowledge…i had forgotten all about the painting (heck it was 200 years ago!), Emerson now has the painting in New Babbage, its part of the citys timeline…i can bend the rules (and i always do) when it comes to Timelord RP, but the city is locked…and i cant break the rules…to do so would have me answering to the High Council of Timelords and to give you an idea of what that lot are like, less than 2 months ago, an arrest warrant was released for two prominent timelords of House Prydonian, the most powerfull of the 6 houses of New Gallifrey…their court trial is taking place in my Time Station within the next few months…and its a full RP trial…and the ending is TOTALLY unknown to anyone…even the President of the High Council.  Fully free form RP.

…yeah, thats how serious things get if ya cross the line :)

Thats why The Painting hasnt magically vanished…cause i cant go back in time and grab it before Emerson does :)

The difference with the Chivas bail out is I knew what i was getting into, it was me who placed the bet with Emerson initially for a years worth of Chivas if he won the bet…he won…and he started rinking me dry, so i bent the rules, went back in time, helped the Chivas brothers set up their business, jumped forward 200 years back to New Babbage’s current timeline and no one is the wiser.  That kind of intervention isnt direct, its the kind of intervention that barley causes a ripple, theres no written documents of the major transactions and plus any documentation from so long ago is probably long gone…maybe…

…and theres the other plot hole…what if that letter i wrote signed with my name did show up somewhere?  Thats the inticate problem with time travel, there are always repercussions somewhere along the way…which is why theres literally no way for a timelord to absolutley botch up the history of New Babbage or to adversly effect the current timeline of New Babbage, because they simply cant :)

Spread the love

Just to add OOC some stuff about the aetheric portal.

The portal is not strictly a Time Lord thing, or at least as far as I know. It is based on a mish-mash of old imperial era experiments and the genius of the late (or at least lost) Doctor Falcon.

That said it can’t be used to mess with the past timeline of New-Babbage because an unknown force resists attempts to do so.

The primary use of the portal is to travel in space rather than time anyhow, time travel adds a lot more complexity to setting up the portal.

    The painting:

Why not nab the painting using the portal?

There are a couple of issues here:

Avariel does not know much about the painting, or where it is being stored, so has no reason to search for it.

Although the portal generator has been used for travel within the city in the past, this is usually not very worthwhile as it takes a lot of power to generate a portal and there is a load of complexity to targeting a portal precicely to a spot within a room without inadvertently destroying the odd house or two.

So in the past the portal generator has only been used for travel within the city in very specific cases, such as investigating the dark aether machines, where the destination is both precicely known and there is a compelling reason to go there via a portal.

of course time is linear. duh. even i can’t turn it backwards. i have to use a strap wrench on the main axle of the master clock to slow it down for…

    *looks around*

    what?

always figured the timelock thing was a technical thing, like the timelords actually put a lockon it,  and so RP’d it as that’s why Dr. D can’t ever get back to Mesozoic Babbage.

though stealing technology from other cities in the future’s something I do all the time

Might have to drop a few Timeforce 10 agents in for a look see.

Not that I’d know anything about that.
