The New Babbage Register is beginning its work…

After the temporary outage of the New Babbage website a few weeks ago, I got to thinking about what might have been lost had the website had been compromised or suffered a catastrophic event, for whatever reason.  After a bit of consideration, I thought that a location that archives and documents the past of New Babbage, seperate from the main New Babbage website, might be a good idea.  As such, I’ve started a new endeavor, the New Babbage Register.

The purpose of the New Babbage Register will be to document and archive the past of the Independent State.  This being said, I’d like to specifically state that it is not the intention to replace the New Babbage website, in any way, shape, or form.  The main NB website is an interactive forum for news, stories, and other events regarding the current events of New Babbage (the proveribal “pulse” of the city).  The Register will focus on the past, from the inception of the Independent City-State, through to the current era, tailing off at about the demise of the New Babbage Ning.  A lot has happened in NB (RP and RL wise), and I’m hoping to consolidate the kaleidoscope of both into a somewhat visible prism.  I realize there is a repository for existing New Babbage history (the New Babbage Department of Records and Archives), and I’m hoping the Register will be a useful supplement to the DRA.

Additionally, I’ve started a Flickr account to attempt to accumulate photographs from the old days of the City-State.  If you happen to have a photo you wish added, please do follow to the NB Register’s Flickr account, located at:  http://www.flickr.com/groups/1818746@N22/

The time frame from the original establishement of New Babbage (late-ish 2007) through late 2009 looks to be the most challening aspect of this project (especially the timeline aspect) – if anyone has suggestions, recollections, etc… of events from that era, please feel free to contact me here, or offline at: TheNewBabbageRegister [at] Yahoo.com – Thank you!

PS – The posted url for the NBR is: http://newbabbageregister.blogspot.com/

Spread the love

Quick correction – the city was off and running at the beginning of 2007.  The first Town Hall was held in February. (Sans mayor, I might add. Umm…and sans Town Hall, now that I think about it.)

    :-)

As I’ve mentioned to a few folks (including Dr. Fabre), I’ve recently recovered my cache of SL images and documents from 2006-2007.  I’m hoping to share the New Babbage materials with everyone as I’m able to get it organized.  I’ll contribute to both the New Babbage Register and to the Archives here.

I will have to dig up the few photos I have from early Babbage.  I wish I had taken more pictures back then.

[Just to set everyone’s minds at ease, the website outage happened because the hosting company determined that we were over our database transaction quota for the day. We think some rogue script found something dynamic on our site and hammered at it to put us over quota. The restriction was lifted once the hammering stopped, and we were down for less than a day. We were never in any danger of losing data. It was also our first sustained outage in all the time the BAR has been up.

The database behind the Reader (and the Archives) both get backup snapshots made automatically every 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours. We also still have a full backup of the Ning (including comments and images), which can be reimported into a suitable vessel when it emerges.]

@ Mr. Sieyes – Thank you, sir – I’ve updated the attribution!

@ Mr. Cleanslate – Thank you… didn’t realize the backups were compelted that frequently.  Additionally, if the Ning is still in some sembelence of existance, I might have to pester you for a few tidbits at some point in the future, if you don’t mind.

and @ anyone else who might be privy to this time frame… at this point, I am currently attempting to reconstruct the “very early days” of New Babbage, from shall we say, “inception” of New Babbage, until its official landing.  I have been busy attempting to gather photos of the time, but for anyone who was there, “back in the day”, any information about the development and promulation of New Babbage would be highly appreciated!
