Walking down the street, Cadmus stopped, he heard guitar and a man singing from the nearby building.
“… And maybe tell you ’bout Phaedra and how she gave me life and how she made it in …”
He shuddered and briskly walked down the street.
Phaedra stood at the window and watched until Lapis was well out of sight. Though their conversation over the fortune telling had been amicable, she disliked giving any member of the church a chance to linger unnoticed near her home. When she turned Pip was crouched against the wall, his dark eyes glittering.
“Baaaaad idea.”
Phaedra smiled, “Nonsense, Pip. Don’t be cheeky. Now be a good lad and make sure he’s not circling back.” He darted out of the house.
The evening had been beyond her expectations. Lapis had proven surprising to someone who was not easily surprised, and she was forced to re-evaluate her initial opinion of him.
