The Bath

Broken-hearted, exhausted and filthy, but finally free, Phaedra sent Pip out with a small purse, and orders to fetch “Tobacco, more lavender soap and a bottle of laudanum. Get the last from Dr. Berithos. The coward should at least be given warning that…” she took a shuddering breath and leaned against the wall, “Nevermind, don’t say anything to him. Just get the laudanum. I am in pain, Pip.”

Pip touched her hand gently, “Don’t ye fret none, mistress, I’ll be back quick as a blink and we can pack our things and go away!”

Go away?  Should we all be so lucky?

As you have never felt a sentiment more delicate that hate or greed, Yoyo, I do not expect you to understand in the least.

But let me assure you, when your little pawn realizes that she’s yet another gleaming gold-piece you’re dangling for your own amusement, she will do much the same as I am: try to leave before forced to witness her love’s next conquest.

You should write that one down, so you don’t forget it.  Quite nearly convincing.

In spite of everything, I feel oddly compassionate towards her.
