The 2014 Oiling Festival Feb 28 – April 6

As the last of the snow runs down the gutters and out into the canals, the factories are shutting down to clean out the grime and do the annual maintenance (and this year, recruit new workers too!)

It’s time for the Oiling Festival! Building opens Friday Feb. 28 and closes Saturday April 5th. Judging and walk around will be Sunday April 6th. If you choose to sponsor a category, you are responsible for judging and providing prizes.

This year there are lots of things that need replacing with more efficient mesh objects. Winning objects will not necessarily be chosen to be taken into city inventory, Tenk will be assessing objects on LOD, mesh density, and land impact before deciding what will actually be used by the city.

(That means you don’t have to be practical to score a winning entry!)

This year’s categories are……

Spread the love

We used to have one of these out in Iron Bay, but it blew up one winter when the freeze cracked the cooling water pipes. One will earn a permanent place on the Iron Bay horizon. Objects should be able to be linked to an anchor prim so it can be pushed as far offshore as possible.

Airships need a place to park, and frankly, the ones we have are showing their age. We wouldn’t want any accidents, would we? Build some new masts out in the Palisade green and hook them up to the ramparts or the elevated tracks. Or let them be free standing. You decide. Need one for Mureaux Park and one for the existing tower outside the city gate.

    BARRICADES

    sponsor: Tepic Harlequin

    prizes: L$2000/1500/1000

    15 land impact

There are many dark episodes in our city’s past. Molotov cocktails are the drink of the hour if you cannot get past the barricades to get to your favorite pub. But the Moreau Riots could not have been the only time citizens rose up and barricaded the streets? Why there was… ummm…. er.. well, while I check my history books, why don’t you go barricade Greg Street? No technique restrictions. Tepic would be particularly happy if your barricade had special sits and moving parts.

Greg Street. Link objects so land impact counts to the street, not the lots.

    MONUMENTS

    sponsor: Fr. Juris Pizzaro

    prizes: L$2000/1500/1000

    10 land impact.

This is the storytelling category for this year.  Now Father Pizzaro, he’s been living here since before the Great Fire, but he’s not as sharp as he used to be. Still, he remembers a lot quite clearly from his younger days, as you would know if you’d ever had tea with him. How much history will we loose when his generation passes? We better make some monuments, quick!

Most the existing monuments were created at a past Oiling Festival and have become sadly outdated for build techniques. They need to be replaced. Storytelling aspect will have an impact on judging.

First – Myrtil and Jimmy for the memorial to those lost in the air kraken fly-over of 1832, when a freak storm pushed them back into the city at low elevation. before that year, air kraken were strictly cryptozoology.

Second – Satu Moreau for a monument to the spirit of the city.

        Thank you!!!

The memorial was of course to those lost in that horrible air kraken invasion, but also to salute the Aether Corps of the time who managed to push them away in the end (after great losses…). Some might remember what the symbol on the bottom left of the monument’s base is.

Too bad the invasion didn’t happen at the same time as the Great Fire, we’d have had roasted squids!

Congratulations to Satu, I was really impressed by your statue and all its meshy and texture details. I am sure it will have a place somewhere in Babbage for everyone to go and admire when they want.

    SEWER HUBS & UNDERGROUND PROPOSALS
    sponsor: Henry
    prizes: L$3000/2000/1000
land imact: as low as possible.

Remember those salt mines last summer? The sewers under babbage square were ripped out after city hall demolision. A mesh object was going to be made to provide a realistic intersection that long runs of prim tunnels could be connected too. The corridors provided are 4m and 8m wide, but the sewers themselves can be wider as long as they are centered on public access corridors. This is something that could be really cool, but the prim burden up to now has been more than the prim budget could allow. Babbage Square and Clockhaven have the best potential for underground roleplay, can it happen with mesh? You can make just the hubs or complete kits as proposals for city use. Note, not all of the underground is wet sewer. There are abandoned passageways and catacombs also.

    • Loki Eliot Loki Eliot March 1, 2014

what are we talking about, Sewer tunnel sections to hide the fact its crappy prim walls?

      • Avariel Falcon Avariel Falcon March 1, 2014

The Clockhaven sewers could do with some love. As people have moved out more and more holes have appeared. I have filled some by pushing anchored prims off the power station plots, but really they need a rethink as there is a limit to what I can fix that way.

        • Cyan Rayna Cyan Rayna March 1, 2014

And sadly I think a lot of areas are like that. Also I’m sure some would like the sewers extended and if there was a low prim generic mesh version it would be easier to do. Being circular though makes for hard meshing.

          • Garnet Psaltery Garnet Psaltery March 1, 2014

Does it help if they’re square with a round hole?

          • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk March 1, 2014

it has got to a state where the whole underground needs to be ripped out. need a more modular solution.

            • Cyan Rayna Cyan Rayna March 2, 2014

Actually that was what I was thinking too. The it would be easier to not only make the in general but come up with interesting non-modular bits as well.

      • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk March 3, 2014

the cabbits were going to make me a mesh hub that I could connect long runs of 2 prim arch + half square hollow tunnels, since we figured there was no way to do runs of that size in mesh for less. if you look underground on the south west corner of city hall block and the end of per dido street there might still be some prims I was messing around with one night.

this is really me fishing for proposals. if you got a solution, I’d love to see it. please put actual upload impact in the description of objects so numbers can be more accurately crunched.

    • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk April 7, 2014

Tepic was the only taker on this one, so he wins the entire purse!

However, I am leaving this one open, as this is something we really really need, and I know there were some other people that were bogged down with other projects that wanted to have a go at it. there’s room for more than one proposal, as the stuff under clockhaven is much older than the stuff under babbage square!

      • Loki Eliot Loki Eliot April 7, 2014

I could not grasp what exactly was needed. I mean if we are talkign abut under the town hall, where does the town hall end and the sewers start since the town hall is still being built.?

        • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk April 11, 2014

What is really needed (for starters) is a hub, 4 way intersections and T’s, that long prim runs of tubes or arches can be hooked into that makes some sort of archetectural sense. i’ve never been satisfied with how the junctions looked. look under the streets around Perdido & Jefferson, where Loki and Holmes and Watson and the Kahruvel Steamworks are.

After seeing the three entries above at the Piermont, I can only say — yes, very clearly.  I’d also like to add special regard for Miss Ember’s “I Lift My Wrench,” for illustrating a new, regional artistic category: New Babbage Utopian.  In a city of builders, whose deity is The Builder, and whose coda is, “…it is GOOD to BUILD,” I think Miss Ember’s portrait has caught something important, here.

Mr Emerson’s portait — I can almost see the hammer and sickle…  brilliant composition.
