Taming of the Shrew…er…Sultana

Washing the stentch of the previous evening from my face, I collected my thoughts on what in the world happened. Unable to grasp this new facade of Bianca, I felt my heart sink slightly seeing what once was a beautiful, elegant leader of our country, now reduced to the gutterish slum of a petty merchants pub in  place so charmingly nicknamed…”The Gut.”

Poor Bianca, I know it is not easy to lose a kingdom, as it was not easy to lose my twin brother in it’s distruction, but she should at least retain her dignity even if she could not retain her kingdom. She is always, and will be by blood and nature the Sultana. Kingdom or not.

I her royal guardsman…and a noble position of honor that has been passed through the Swift Family for generations. I will not let that nobility sink into the dross of this city and drag her elegance with it.

Who does that walking emaciated corpse of a man think he is?  Does he not know that a woman of the Sultana’s status and breeding is as far above him as the sun is above his filthy pub?  What an insult to the dignity of the Sultana’s person!  Somehow he is determined to drag the Sultana’s name through the muck and mire of the street.  Perhaps he is ignorant of what royalty is?  In such a place, I would not be surprised.

Perhaps…perhaps it is his base desires that lead his mind?  I have looked into his past and have found evidence of licentious behavior.  All I have to do is look into his eyes and see the corruption of his soul.  After viewing certain actions of his guests I can tell that…how do these westerners put it…he has “a way with women” and in no way is THIS a compliment.  He has a way with women that a novice farmer has a way with the stubburn sow.  They both end up angry, frustrated and covered with filth.

My only hope is that the Sultana does not end up marked by this muck.  I pray that I will be able to keep her safe from herself until she can see the truth of such matters. That is my only hope…

Spread the love

Underby awoke next to Bianca, who slept still, and thought back on that hilarious guardsman from the night before.  The poor fool, probably believes literally in the concept of “noble blood”… Was he disappointed when he first noticed it was not truly blue?  Or did they have that legend in Mondrago?  He would try to remember to ask Bianca when she awoke.  Chuckling, he though: He shall be in for a rude awakening as to how royalty is treated in Babbage.  He wondered if he had been introduced to the Emperor yet?

    Underby smiled.

If not, he would be more than happy to introduce the guard.  Let him see how alleged royalty is viewed here.

Underby enjoyed the warmth of the bed and wondered, amused, which cold cot the guard awoke in this morning…

Bianca sat up slowly, her head ringing from the alcohol she consumed the night before. Looking down at her attire, and slightly aggitated she had fallen asleep in her dress, she looked over taken back a bit to see Underby beside her. He was smiling…she did not.

“IS…there a reason you are in my bed?” she said confusion upon her lips, “Better yet, why are you smiling and in my bed.”

“To ensure that gorilla did not return to attempt to carry you off over his shoulder again.”  Underby replied, taking the small double-shot derringer from beneath his pillow, standing, and placed it back into his right hip pocket, as usual.

    Underby yawned, and stretched.

“I don’t sleep on floors.” he said, and walked out the door without another word.

Bianca removed her hair tie, eyepatch, and winced as she felt the sensation returning to the area. She watched him leave before uttering with a sigh, “Thank you for staying by my side then…my love.” and with that she rose to prepare for what will probably end up a very, very long day.

Dear, Ms. Namori. I must say I had no idea Akidami was such a charmingly fussy chaperone. But then I never had the opportunity to meet him in person in my quiet visits to Mondrago.

“walking emaciated corpse of a man” hey, no reason to compare Underby to corpses, they’re usually more polite, aside from maybe the ravenous ones
