Gartloch was a beautiful Victorian general hospital, built in 1889 – it closed in 1996, and parts have now been redeveloped into the usual soulless executive village. Some bits are still untouched – the development has stalled.” – Ben Cooper

Ohhh! pretty and spooky!
The only building of that quality that’s abandoned I know is flinders Street station’s office (which is odd considering how busy the station itself is)

there used to be a building near where I lived that was close to that level of :O
used to be a TB hospital.    rumours of haunting ended up making he caretaker and police constantly paranoid about tresspassers and so it sadly got torn down and is now an empty lot

Yeah, the old Gartloch Asylum in the Greater Glasgow area, been there a few times passing through.

In Scotland there’s a lot of old decaying early era to late era Victorian former asylums and hospitals sitting around slowly degrading with collapsing roofs.  There’s a reason this happens.  As a FULLY intact building local councils can’t do anything to renovate or change the appearance of the structure because they are listed as “Class A+” builldings by National Heritage.  National Heritage states that any buildings of Class B, Class A or Class A+ cannt have any redesign, or redevelopment.

So…what do local councils do?  If they can’t redevelop the area, it means they cant stick semi detached housing down.  They offer the building to National Heritage so NH can pay for the upkeep.  National Heritage refuse because they really dont have much money left.

When they refuse it defaults back to the local council.  The local council then state they they do not have enough money to care for the building.  They put a fence around it, and let the building slowly decay for 3 or 4 years.  These old hospitals got closed in the 1980’s to the early 90’s, are in usually poor condition and dont really take long for sections of roof to collapse.

The minute a collapse happens the local council declare the building “Unsafe and a danger to onlookers” and then demolish some…or all of it.
Below is a link to the old victorian asylum in this town…Ravenspark Hospital.  Named after the numerous raven to roost in the massive old trees around here.  The original hospital is on the bottom of the page.  The council here was publically hauled over the coals and subsequently voted out when the next election came around…

Its not just old Ravenspark thats being ignored by the local council, what is considered a classic peice of Venetian Victorian Revival, and one of the only ones left in the UK is also being ignored by the idiots who run this town.  Pilkingtons Trinity Church…

Irvine is a VERY old town.  Former Royal Burgh of Scotland, former major port for Glasgow (before the clyde was deepend) theres a lot of history in this town slowly decaying…its sad.

That is a beautiful church. I’d love to see something like that in New Babbage.

It would be amazing to see all those buildings built in New Babbage, to be honest. I really love old architecture and really think it’s a shame to see such beautiful buildings litteraly rot away.
