Sept. 8 — Once Again, a New Direction

((Private journal entry, but feel free to comment.))

My visit home was really quite wonderful. It was splendid to spend time with my parents, with my brother and sister-in-law, and with my niece, who is turning into quite the charmer. And I learned that I’ve another niece–or nephew–on the way! I shall have to see, as time passes, whether I can return for the birth or not.

There was also plenty of training with Mariah–not much of the physical fighting this time, but other techniques she considered important for me. A great deal of time was spent on lock-picking, which I can see as being useful. She gave me tools and sample locks to take home with me, and even suggested I try my hand at some of the locks around New Babbage! I don’t know about that; I’d rather not do that without good cause. Though perhaps with a few of the currently empty buildings…

Well, we’ll see.

I had hoped that the city would have calmed down during my absence, but it appears things only got worse. The Dagon temple is complete, there are rumors of the strange behavior of Miss Stargirl, and, worst of all, the murder of Mr. Pip in the Church of the Builder. That people would so condone it…

I can, in a way, understand their feelings. After all, I would not be overly grieved if Dr. Obolensky were to finally die. But if the line isn’t drawn at murder, then where is it drawn? Or would there be no line at all, and all of us free to respond as we please?

No. Not even in New Babbage will I stand for that.

At least Miss Jedburgh and Miss Sky are investigating it. I know this can be left in their very capable hands.

There was other news, waiting for me alone, when I returned. I found an extensive letter from Baron Wulfenbach, asking if I would consider becoming one of the New Babbage liaisons for his consulate. The letter detailed the duties and functions of such a liaison, none of which seem particularly onerous.

It’s so flattering to be asked to such a position of trust! But there’s more to it than that for me. If–when–Dr. Obolensky attempts something again, if I can call on the Baron’s resources… Not that I’ll ask him for help for every little problem–no, I know I’ll need to be more judicious than that. But I know he could be of inestimable help.

So I wrote back last night, accepting the offer. I shall have to talk to Master Jimmy soon, as he is another liaison, and I’m sure he can help me learn all that needs to be done.

This should be very interesting.

Spread the love

Welcome back, Miss Hienrichs. Your presence has been sorely missed.

Yes, things do seem to be in much disarray. For one, I do not condone Pip’s murder. Nor do I condone the Church overstepping its “authority” and detaining him like they did. Although, from the evidence so far (from what little i am aware of), the Church may not be responsible for Pip’s murder. (Although detaining him without proper security certainly made him more vulnerable to attack, and for that I DO hold the Church accountable).

Perhaps you missed the rampage last night of a martian-like construct through the streets of Port Babbage and Babbager Square?

    Welcome back….

I *did* miss that! ((Drat the luck!)) I shall have to look around later today to see if there was any damage.

    Fraulein Liaison,

I am pleased that not only have you accepted my offer, but you are pleased enough about it to at least parenthetically share it with others.  Your Co-Liaison has said he shall arrange a meeting with you soon to make plans for your shared office.

    Vielen dank,

    K. Wulfenbach
