re: Blogging vs SL

I thought it might be time to remind people that what you read on the BAR (or NaNaNing or the Not-Ning) is NOT NECESSARILY something your character would know about in-world, in New Babbage.

It really seems to be bleeding over into SL a lot recently, I’ve had a lot of people visiting Underby in jail and mentioning things that there is no way they could know unless I told them myself, or someone like Phaedra told them, which is highly unlikely.  Of course, there would be rumours flying around about Underby, his “zombie servant” has been seen on the streets, Pip was never good at keeping his status a secret, so I understand that there would be a certain level of talk behind Underby’s back, but its making RP a little difficult.

Do other people think this is becoming a problem, or is it just me and I’m nuts?  Are there suggestions as to how we might curb this a bit?

Spread the love

((You’re right, and difficult to deal with because so much is text-RPed in here and assumed to be included with inworld RP.  Disclaimers at the beginning of posts to separate the known and the unknown might be a way.))

I tend to not post many RP stories on here for that reason, as I’ve noticed the same thing happening to me. I just go along with whatever it is they know as if they heard about if from the mouth of someone else. But yeah, I do believe whatever is said here in story form, should not be known about in New Babbage SL. That just ruins the fun for everyone and makes them grow bored quickly.

I think the Steampunks Group Chat is another factor worth considering. Once something is said on there does it become common knowledge?

Excellent forum topic. And yes, I’ve seen a bit of a bleed, but nothing that was too shocking. Perhaps we need to emphasize the fun and importance of talking “face-to-face”?

Can’t wait to hear other thoughts on this.

part of why when I blog, i try to leave details I want hidden to stay hidden out.

I do have to admit lately it’s been tough to keep track what i’ve heard IC as opposed to what i’ve heard OOC, they have been bleeding over a bit

It can be quite difficult to be involved in a roleplay, however, if one spends little time in Babbage physically.  I think the best idea for stopping info bleed is to follow Jimmy’s suggestion and add a little background to any RP’d story bits posted here.

The spirited discussion surrounding current RPs is great, but we probably should all remember that the philosophical discussion is only happening on the BAR – the actual results of these discussions still need to be played out in the City.

However, as I lack the skills to actually post the letter on the militia’s door, please consider Grace’s letter to Mr. Tenk and the militia as public knowledge.

((Good question. In the past I used the NING as a place to post most of my Role Play. Was it meant to be common knowledge? I assumed that people realized, that while it was fun to respond, if it was someone’s journal entry it was not common knowledge and in SL would be Meta-gaming.

Sharing these things was a way for people to get a feel for my character for those whom Cadmus has never had a chance to RP with. (Which is many of you.)I tend to respond to posts as Cadmus would. I consider the BAR part of my RP. So I see at least 4 status for a post.
1.) Out of character (or typist)
    2.) IC Commmon Knowledge
    3.) IC Not Common Knowledge
4.) IC to others posts (The persona of the character out of context of actual RP in SL)

I am afraid Jimmy is right about Disclaimers at the beginning of posts.
If I am going to need to do that for every time I type something then I am going to request the web designers to put in a drop down box with my 4 Disclaimers. >:P ))

I was thinking that actually… we will look into it.

Excellent points.  Often times I have difficulty remembering what is common knowledge and what is not. But then my character is rather dense at times anyway, so that works for me :-)

Anyone else like the idea for drop-down tags for posts that Cadmus suggested?

    • Gabriell Anatra Gabriell Anatra September 16, 2010

That sounds like a good idea to me too.

I had the experience of asking someone a question IC, and their response was “Read my blog”

    • Jimmy Branagh Jimmy Branagh September 16, 2010

      ((LOL.  IC – “Wot’s a blog?”))

    • Mosseveno Tenk Mosseveno Tenk September 16, 2010

that’s better than ‘Don’t you read my blog?’

      um, no.

cf. tenk’s rules of roleplay “No One Cares.”

I would hope people don’t stop posting things here–this is pretty much the only way I know about what’s going on, as I’m not on as late as most people. And since I’m the only one maintaining the Current Events page on the Wiki, I’m even more dependent on this site.

(So someone post something about the whole Martian thing! I don’t know enough about it to add it to the Current Events!)

The way I see it is that if something is posted as a blog post, it’s private–unless otherwise stated, or I learn about it through in-world in-character conversations. Anything posted to the In-Character Forum is public knowledge.

    • Grendel Footman Grendel Footman September 16, 2010

I only know abut the martians even because Gizzy told me she saw them

  10. Mosseveno Tenk Mosseveno Tenk September 16, 2010

i’ve always been pretty good about being able to keep it seperated, even when things are jokingly mentioned in group chat that really would not be IC common knowledge (like my ears. you’ve never seen them unless your name is myrtil or keithan).

Yes, some people do have trouble with the seperation. That is called “metagaming”

    • Cyan Icewolf Cyan Icewolf September 16, 2010

Actually you showed them to Nat, Myrtil and I think once when we were looking for land :3

That’s not one of his ears, that’s one of the straps on his goggles, zoom in on the photo and you can see that. :)  I’ve never seen Tenk’s ears.

Yes, I love reading the blogs, but half the fun is in remaining ICly blissfully ignorant of the creepy undercurrents and Things Beyond The Realm of Science.

  13. Ceejay Writer Ceejay Writer September 16, 2010

This is why Ceejay drinks to excess.  Her memory is a bit fuzzy.  She might forget something or ‘remember’ something the green fairies told her.

That’s the flippant answer.  But it’s handy, since what I see here in the BAR always feels flavored by whatever is going on inworld, and what seems to me to be more and more direct roleplay in Steampunks open chat.

There is absolutely no way we can be in the BAR, in Babbage, and in Steampunks chat 24/7 (and if you are, you need to step back), so keeping in mind that there will always be the blurry bits of knowledge is good.  Talking off-sides with others can help you stay on track.

BTW, I love roleplay, especially good, solid stuff done with care and cooperation.  I saw glimpses of a concept in another thread a few days ago that I loved, and as we slide into Autumn and winter, I may find a moer time, and way to tease that thread of the fabric out and see what Ceejay can do to become involved.  It’s the notion of the rights of non-humans, so ya know.  I will of course approach it in my own laid back way. :)

Right now i’ve given up with roleplaying in New Babbage…it’s like walking into a minefield, probably why i’m not spending as much time in Babbage latley.

it can be vic, tread carefully’s all I can really reccomend

  16. Mr Underby Mr Underby September 19, 2010

I hope you don’t stop RPing permanently Victor, simply because some folks are too stupid to know the obvious difference between RP and IRL, ruining it for everyone else who can.
