Oddly intriguing, suspensful and also morose, “The Black Cat” first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post on August 19, 1843. Poe’s first-person narrative falls into the realm of Horror/Gothic Literature, and has been examined in association with themes of insanity and alcoholism. A fitting brew for Halloween – the traditionally dark Poe, a black cat, and a firm reminder that the capacity for violence and horror lies within each of us!
