Prime Minister Morningtons First Speech

As folks looked up into the sky, they seen the massive 90m long HMA Fullarton II, an airship which has been almost permanently parked above Brunel Hall slowly and very laboriously make its way over the border of Academy and into Port, in its wake, leflets, thousands of them, was dropped on all major parts of the entire city state, littering the streets, gardens and roofs of almost every home…the letter reads…

“Dear Opressed Citizens of the Opressed City State of New Babbage

I write to you, from the free Independant Township of Academy of Industry.  Unlike the scurrelous and heinous rumours from your oppressor’s in City Hall it has not been renamed “Morningtown”.

Your oppressive leader, the ACTING Mayor Underby, has done nothing to alleviate the turmoil and strife which has plagued the fine city state for almost two weeks.  His rampaging ‘Night Patrol’ shoot’s innocent by standers, and city property all in the name of protection.  The overworked dockers, overworked NBTA and overworked staff of the Hawksley pump house and even the clockworks of the AP&E in Clockhaven have joined a common goal, to work in the FREE and INDEPENDENT Township of Morningtown Academy of Industry.

I realise, being a business owner myself, that times are tough.  Your deliveries have not arrived, your stock is laying waste in the docks due to the strike, a strike which Acting Mayor Underby could have avoided for the good and prosperity of the City State of New Babbage.  Alas, he did not.  Instead he has the entire city in the form grip of his dictatorship.

I however, being the self appointed Prime Minister of the free and independent Township of Academy of Industry realise that your businesses are suffering, your families are suffering, and the city state is suffering.

Today, myself and the entire Port gangs have completed the airship dock tower and the flag pole and obelisk which is now sitting in Builders Square.  If you want deliveries made, you can trust that the port gangs you all know and love who used to work in the opressed docks of Port Babbage and Clockhaven will take delivery of your stock here, in the free and independent Township of Academy of Industry, a very small and minor surcharge of 5% is the only fee we ask.

Be well, fine citizens of the opressed City State of New Babbage!

Yours

Victor Mornington

Prime Minister of the free and independent Township of Academy of Industry”

You’ll want to be careful with that percentage Victor, too high and you’ll become Victerby, evil prime minister of the Academy!

  2. Buckminster Solo Buckminster Solo January 30, 2013

Returning to Shockley Hall from a portside shopping excursion, Mr Solo noticed a newly-erected, incredibly odd sign on Savory Street and the ground littered with fliers. He picked one up, quickly scanned it’s contents and…

    “What! WHAT!! WHAAAAAT!!!”

Solo marched into Brunel Hall, passed the front desk and began pounding on the door to the owner’s office.

“MR MORNINGTON!! MORNINGTON!! GET YOUR FREAKY MUTANT BACKSIDE OUT HERE RIGHT NOW AND EXPLAIN THIS!!!”

A befuddled-looking porter approached the angry visitor and said “No’ in, is ‘e.”

“Where is he? When will he be back? Where’s he gone?!?”

    “Dunno, do I.”

Solo’s frustration mounted. Through gritted teeth, he managed to say, “Tell your boss that neither I nor my employers came here with the intention of participating in a civil war! And furthermore, with this act of untrammeled arrogance, this… ANNEXATION, he has overstepped his bounds by a considerable margin and unilaterally involved parties who wish to remain, in all respects, neutral and nonaligned — AND that he does NOT represent the Institute in the irksome political theatrics of this preposterous city! WE DO NOT TAKE SIDES! Tell him that!”

The porter stared blankly. “Uhhh… ‘kay.”

A small portal from Lovelace opens and several small bags of popcorn tumble out.

      Mmm… popcorn…

“You know, there is not much I am not good at,” said Emerson putting down the hookah hose on the flyer he had found blowing along Prince Dakkar Blvd.

“That is true,” commented Junie, sitting beside him on the couch.

“Whatever,” said Malus with a tone that indicated he was not really listening as he primed a third hose.

“But there is one thing I am not good at,” continued Emerson. He reached for the hose again and appeared lost in thought.

    “Care to share,” winked Junie.

“Do you really need to ask him?” Malus sneered.

“Suffering.” Emerson replied, picking up another of the flyers that had been slipped under the Gangplank’s door. “I don’t do suffering well. I have never really been suited to it.”

“But you dish it out so well.” Malus started to laugh at his own joke.

“I think we need to meet with Victor,” said Emerson. “Junie do we own in excess of 25% of the Gangplank?”

“I think so,” she looked over at Malus.

“You two own it outright,” he replied rolling his eyes.

“Good!” clapped Emerson. “Then I propose we secede from New Babbage forthwith and align ourselves with Morningtown.”

“Oh, that sounds fun,” said Junie. “Do you think the law applies to private businesses? I thought it was an obscure clause for districts.”

“We have our own flag” Emerson pointed out.

    “Good point,” said Junie.

    “Should we vote?” suggested Emerson.

    I’m in,” said Malus.

    “Me too,” added Junie.

“Great, let’s assume Momoe, Kaylee, Bert and Njal are all in agreement so it can be unanimous. Victor will be thrilled,” Emerson smiled. “He’ll likely make me co-regent or something of the sort.”

“No doubt dear, but do you think Mr. Underby might be mad.”

“Define mad. Besides we’ll have the backing of Victor’s military might. Fire up the boiler on the carriage, Squire, we’re off to Morningtown.”

      co-regent…..riiiiiiiiiight…..

    • Avariel Falcon Avariel Falcon January 30, 2013

This is an interesting plan indeed… But it would stand more chance of success if you held more of the region of Clockhaven…

As you probably know the Clockhaven power station stands just behind your property and those of us who live and work at the power station are great supporters of Mr Mornington. So may I propose an alliance? Let us pool our resources and declare the greater part of Clockhaven part of Morningtown! Yay!

      • Emerson Lighthouse Emerson Lighthouse January 30, 2013

We can be Morningtown’s first official colony.

    Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

Seeing as how you are the Prime Minister, that would imply a representative government of ministers.

I propose one minister per building. Each building should appoint its minister and the Parliament should convene as soon as possible.

    Regards,

    Blackberry Harvey

    Humble shopkeep

    • Emerson Lighthouse Emerson Lighthouse January 30, 2013

      *raises hand*

Can I be finance minister? Co-regent sounds too responsible.

Ooh!  I want to be Minister of Health.  I do believe the Brunel cellar harbors potentially-dangerous organisms and must be inspected at once.

I vote myself minister of fashion! All men must hereby wear kilts at all times!
