Personal Notebook, August 10

It has been but a day since I was with Father Pizzaro when the MacBain woman made her accusations against the dwarf Pip. This morning Father Moonwall stopped me for a conversation. He is very please with my progress and has appointed me to lead the examination! I cannot believe my good fortune to be given such a task. We discussed possible strategies to gain access to the subject. The Father did note that I had a reputation for recklessness that reminded him of himself in his youth, can you imagine that? Old Father Moonwall once being as me?

That gave me the kernel of a plan to let myself be drawn in by Underby to gain access to his servant. He will see my youth as an opportunity for his corrupting influence. Father Moonwall smiled, he smiled at my plan! How I want him to be proud of me.

I waited until evening to approach the Bucket of Blood, perusing the bookshelves as would any curious student. While  I was there I saw a Moreau boy try to order strong drink, he even claimed that the Mayor himself had given him his first taste of liquor. Underby grabbed him by his prominent mouse ear and bodily dragged him up the steps onto the street. What a sight that was! Does this happen often in bars? How can  this city achieve its full potential as the capital of a new empire when the children are raised in debauchery?

Underby himself is a hideous man. I saw to my horror that he has the eyes of a goat. He assured me that he is a devout follower of the Church, but his duties as a shopkeeper prevent him from enjoying full fellowship. I promised to return the following night.

I do hope I can persuade Underby to serve coffee if I am to frequent his bookshop. I had to make do with black tea, which did not sit well at all. My sleep was disturbed by strange dreams, of horses siloetted against a city on fire. Strange, yes? I do not recall ever startling out of a dream before. I sat for breathing exercises to make use of the time until sleep would come again, but soon I heard Anton stirring and we talked of these events together, while the rest slept. Anton is nearly as excited for me as I am!

I am not afraid.

*running a match across the bar top, Underby lights a cigar and puffs.  He thinks about that young monk, and whether he could manipulate him as an ‘in’ to the Church.*

“Brother Malus: I witnessed the militia operation on the observatory.

    Father Moonwall: A ridiculous affair.

Brother Malus: They lack organization. There was little strategy in place.

Father Moonwall: Exactly. They lack the logic and reason we hold.

Brother Malus: The scientist Obolensky was able to manipulate and control the entire force.

Father Moonwall: He is a brilliant man in his own way.”

*sputters* Now wait a minute! We were…that is…
