Yeah sticking this into empty plots across the entire city.

I’ve returned some of them, but left the rest.  Theres a few pissed off people in the city who seen these, some of them voiced their opinion of it in Engineers chat and other said “it was ok cause its an alt of a well known person”.

So thats what it has come down to.  Us and Them…

    • Professor Parx Professor Parx April 29, 2012

If I was a person who’d recently moved into the city then yes, less leeway would be given. That’s how life works. I’ve been here nearly 4 years. In that time people have complained about a great many builds. People complained about Red’s Tree House. People complained about the current Town Hall. People complained about Brunel Hall.

I would have thought the neon sign on a build from someone who’s been in Babbage that long a dead giveaway that it was a joke.

      • DoctorDinosaur Runner DoctorDinosaur Runner April 29, 2012

as someone who’s gotten complaints from past buildings and things over the years, all I can say is, it’s SL, even away from the mainland, some people will find cause to complain, obvious joke or not, I honestly had no problem with it, ……..and really wanted some soylent green and okra cola

  3. Arconus Arkright Arconus Arkright April 28, 2012

“Okra cola”? Is that for when you’re out of ipecac?

    • Bookworm Hienrichs Bookworm Hienrichs April 29, 2012

Dang it–now I want to write a jingle to the tune of ‘Oklahoma,’ but not being a Southerner, I’ve no idea what okra’s like.

/me sings, “Oooooooooooo-kra Cola is the drink that satisfies your thirst…”

Griefing + “Alt of Well Known Person i.e. Babbage Old Guard Approved” = Perfectly Fine

  5. Jimmy Branagh Jimmy Branagh April 28, 2012

All I meant is that Parx is a long established character, an alt of an even longer established character, and that it was unlikely that he was being malicious.  He’s certainly no griefer.

My final word on the subject.

If ‘know person’ is equal to someone who has been around for years and contributed greatly to the city, then yes, I think they are due some slack when they do something wrong.

It looks like this was ment as a joke, so maybe treat it as such.

  7. Caesar Osterham Caesar Osterham April 28, 2012

Last night at Foot Tappin’ Friday there were several jokes made about putting up some huge, neon signs around Babbage.  I honestly didn’t think that anyone would do this.

  8. Elleon Bergamasco Elleon Bergamasco April 28, 2012

Historically the absence of the Clockwinder has sometimes resulted in good humored shenanigans by citizens with that mentality. While I was tounglashed by those who did not appreciate the “First Annual Babbage Flower Show”, I was not run out of town on the rails, and even shown some leeway/enthusiasm by those who enjoyed the humor of the event. Hopefully this will be seen as a similar happening, tho I really would encourage those considering pranks to keep in mind the hard work that many Babbage citizens go to in order to maintain a semblance of period. I do think “Griefing” perhaps is a bit too harsh a classification..

    Sincerely,

    EB

I have to say that doing it today, on a day when visitation will be up because of the ball, with residency so low makes it a very, very poor decision.

    Poor form.

Griefing? Wow. I’ll order in some new dictionaries for the library. It appears the definition of griefing has changed.

I’ve been making comments in chat about this all week. Yes it was meant as a joke.

No Victor it’s not “Us and Them”. Yes Elleon the New Bloomage was part of an inspiration. I just went a different way.

Covenant-breaking jokes only happening when Tenk isnt around to do/say anything about it are all I need to decide whether I think theyre funny or not.

Maybe if its something covenant-breaking thats so funny, do it while Tenk is here to have a say in it instead of waiting until he’s away.

  12. DoctorDinosaur Runner DoctorDinosaur Runner April 29, 2012

neon signs aren’t greifing, now if those neon signs spawned hordes of particle penii to overflow the sim and crash it, then I would say greifing, giant neon sign , not so much

  13. Blackberry Harvey Blackberry Harvey April 29, 2012

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a little fun. We can be a humorless, reactionary, and sober bunch sometimes. Odd for a town with so many pubs.

If it were me, I would even try to make the neon sign into something ridiculously in theme — a Jacob’s Ladder “A” for instance.

  14. Jedburgh30 Dagger Jedburgh30 Dagger April 29, 2012

    My 2p.  As always YMMV.

Griefing, maybe not.  Bad timing with the ball, maybe.  Amusing, a touch.

Perhaps if it has been a Starbucks or a Trader Joes….

The next bit will only have maximum impact if you were raised in the south, or had a southern mother.

When I saw it, I shook my head and said “mm mm mm.  Bless his heart, that’s just tacky.”

    • Glaubrius Valeska Glaubrius Valeska April 29, 2012

The secret, for those handicapped by not having grown up in the South, is the pronunciation of the “mm’s”: short, short, long. And with a soulful hint in the last mmm.

      • Jedburgh30 Dagger Jedburgh30 Dagger April 30, 2012

You understand the full depth of that phrase, delivered with the proper inflection.

  15. Tepic Harlequin Tepic Harlequin April 29, 2012

Well, they are a bit bright… but it got me thinking, what would a similar shop look like in New Babbage? I have some idea, having seen the Shambles and such like places in the UK, though even those are “gentrified” now. There is also a Victorian pub nearby with beautiful, brightly coloured exterior tiling (I will get pictures when I can, pouring with rain just now!). So colour, and tacky can be in character….

Maybe a selection of temporary buildings would be useful, as window dressing on empty lots. Just for fun, after this broke, another resident (I’ll let them say who they are, if they wish) and myself had a go at making low prim, low rent shops from bit and bobs we already had. It was fun, and although we didn’t get very far, it’s something that could be useful for the City?

As for lighting, does anyone remember how old stage lighting was done, I seem to remember some sort of chemical reaction, with limestone, hence “lime-light”?

  16. Junie Ginsburg Junie Ginsburg April 29, 2012

For me it wasn’t an issue of neon, it was an issue of modern urban decay. The ATM sign and other anachronistic indicators in the window. The hip-hoppy graffiti. It broke theme in a way that was an eyesore.

That said, I won’t go as far as to agree with the griefing charge, but it does seem to have been poor judgement. Everyone makes poor judgement calls sometimes, so unless they stick around it seems like a good idea to move on.

(I’m not always known for my exquisitely good taste, so I don’t think it’s fair on my part to throw too many stones.)

    • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk April 29, 2012

Junie sussed it. I have done this myself on my old estate late at night on empty land. The problem here is the modern signage and graffiti, which “takes you out of the problem” as we used to say. It “breaks” the illusion of era, which is why it crosses a line. New Bloomage, while a prank of the same theme, did not cross that line.

There is a lot of signage around town that makes me cringe through bad font choices.

  17. Jedburgh30 Dagger Jedburgh30 Dagger April 29, 2012

Just dawned on me…new build contest fodder.

    A proper Victorian bodega-esque store.

  18. Kaylee Frye Kaylee Frye April 29, 2012

If it were just one then I’m sure it would have bothered me much less.  But that I found six of them around town even after victor had said he returned some, seems a bit overboard.

  19. Toshiro Tigerauge Toshiro Tigerauge April 30, 2012

Joking asside, wether people found it funny or not. A joke is only amusing for so long, and these have been there at least a full day now, perhaps its time to clear them and the boxes of cobbles encasing some of them away now?

For both visitors and residents that may want to rp or take pictures or make machinima or simply enjoy the ambiance of the estate, I think things that take people out of the theme visualy should only be very short term and temporary.

    • Kaylee Frye Kaylee Frye April 30, 2012

The cobble boxes are mine.  I’ll be happy to remove them as soon as there arent full-bright covenant-breaking neon buildings under them.  I figured an ugly cobble box is better than the alternative.

      • Phaedra Underby Phaedra Underby April 30, 2012

As the admins are the only ones who aren’t sick of this joke, you can hardly blame someone for deciding to DO something.

      • Jonathon Spires Jonathon Spires April 30, 2012

How the blazes can anyone who has invested so much time in NB; understands, one supposes, current situations and challenges, be so obtuse about this?

Your joke is not funny, and seeing what had happened anyone with a speck of decency would have removed all six or however many of these 42 primed delights you plunked down wherever you could. Sometimes a joke bombs. Deal with it.

For whatever its worth, I had two friends looking to buy land in town the day you put these down, both were former residents. Neither much cared for the Zindra looking objects on the land they were interested in. Wow, what a laugh.

But hey yer Grace, you’ve got beaucoups of time and merit in town, so whatever, right?

        • Professor Parx Professor Parx April 30, 2012

Mr. Spires you are welcome to your opinions on humor. As the comments here have shown not everyone else agrees with you. The builds were returned as soon as I was able. My apologies for not being at your beck and call.

As for my decency, they were DESIGNED to be OFFENSIVE. Hello! Villain!

          • Mr Tenk Mr Tenk April 30, 2012

No one ever said it was easy to be a villain here. Have the urchins stripped the hubcaps off your chair yet?

      • Kaylee Frye Kaylee Frye April 30, 2012

So if you put something in every empty lot across town, it’s ok, but if I do it’s suddenly somehow breaking the rules when yours weren’t?

You know, I’d really like to say so much more here, but for the sake of the mods on the site here, I’m done.
