Miss Hienrichs asked me today how the BAR might handle the onset of Display Names. So far we’ve asked for BAR usernames to match Avatar Names, for two purposes:
- make sure posts come from avatars, not impostors; and
- tell spammers from real avatars.
Or, more specifically, we don’t want some random griefer to start publishing comments as if he were Mosseveno Tenk.
With Display Names being A) non-unique and B) optionally private, it seems we may have difficulty with our policy going forward. Any ideas?
Simple, ask new registrants to register with their real sign up name and NOT the display name. Even if someone changes their name with a “display name” their actual old sign up name is still seen in their profile.
For instance, i could change my display name to Victor McAndrews but in my profile it would say victor1st.mornington cause that is my original sign up name when i registered.
It seems like the best way to deal with display names would be to only accept them from avi’s who have IM’ed you and set it up in-world first. Say I tell you I want ‘The Shadow’ If ‘The Shadow’ gets accepted on the board and later starts sending viagra spam it’s my fault.
as one of the folks who has been tasked with sorting this out, I am all for keeping the actual account name as a requirement for joining, something that can be verified in SL. Perhaps the design team can come up with some way of making a posting name to accomodate this new feature. we still have folks signing up who can’t follow these rules as currently laid out…
A posting name would be good, I think. The thing is, from what I can tell, one *can’t* create a FirstName(space)LastName username anymore. The user name can only be letters and numbers–no spaces or other non-alphanumerics. The BAR, right now, only displays the username. If I couldn’t post here under my chosen display name of, say, Samatha Cartwright, but had to use my username of SamCar23skidoo, because that’s the username I picked…well, that’d kinda stink. *wry grin*
say hi to Hoss and Little Joe for me…
