I’ve been looking for any old pics of Babbage I can find online, it’s amazing how much it’s changed. I’ll put some here now and then……..
Does anyone know how to make the images be smaller and have you click a link to enlarge, like when you upload directly ?
A town hall meeting from August 11 2007……
Wow, the old Town Hall. And many old names.
Thanks for sharing Miss Amber
Oy musta been off thet dye. Me an’ Myrtil did everythin’ together back then.
probably sleepin under one of the couches, having drunk all the rum!
Yer prob’ly roight Tep. Them’s wos th’ dyes, eh? Now we’re loike foine, upstandin’ cit’zens an’ awl.
i remember that building. didn’t know it was the town hall tho! i didn’t much meet anyone that first year.
And these too pre babbage models by Jefferson Gould, I put them in another post but started this old Picture post to replace it, more obvious title now …..
March 21 2006 for whatsits sake !!!!
This pic has some info in the original flikr page about who is shown in it ….
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ordinal/95700526/
Feb 5th 2006 , thats even older still lol.
This has made me wonder if it would be possible to make a detailed lowish prim model of the city in mesh ? Could make it wood textured so the buildings look carved from wood rather than try to acurately texture them all maybe.
Here are some more, I’ve found lots I’ve never seen by older Babbage residents, also alot of their flikr pages, I’ve tried to put up ones by other people I havn’t heard of first instead, I imagine most of the old timers have seen those ages ago.
Map, November 30th 2007
Canals, May 19 2007
Canals Dec 28th 2007
Old City Hall Babbage Square April 14 2007
And again April 29 2007
In a Babbage Cog page I found they show a glass floor in this building with giant cogs below in what I assume is the basement there now. It seems to open into the canal in the same spot.
I am almost positive there was a city hall before this one, more primitive. I don’t think I have any pics of it. But this one did open to the canals below. When planning the Canals sim, Shaun had his map with parcels on the floor of the canal beneath City Hall. Underwater. I really don’t know why.
Update: I found a pic of the older City Hall, posted to comments.
Check the New Babbage Register group in Flickr for more goodies! I have some in my own flickr stream from 2008, if interested.
This one is fun. For a time I rented space above Piermont Landing for my airship, the SS Spanky (don’t ask) when I wanted to free up prims over my loft in Her Dark Materials. Breezy named a bit of path on her property “Writer Way”. Apparently I was excited about this, based on my pose.
Anyone else remember the Mark Twain Study that was also on the Piermont property? I loved that.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ceejay_writer/2840983018/in/pool-1818746@N22/
Do you mean the Mark Twain study that’s still there? You should visit Babbage sometime.
Rudely said, sir, but information well taken. Since the remodel of Piermont Landing, I have only arrived at the upper platform for events. I didn’t realize the Twain study was still there. I am very happy to know this, and do apologize for not noticing the ground level in some time.
Here we go. Babbage Square, February 7, 2007. That big monstrosity in the middle, with gigantic smokestacks? The first City Hall. I wish I had pics of the interior, but I don’t. The smokestacks inspired the flag, if I remember correctly.[img_assist|nid=5753|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=534|height=439]
Oh wow. And the original hospital (in white). And I think the teal
roof building was Carricre Wind’s “Society of Undaunted Ladies”.
Odd. I have no memory of that town hall. If it have already been
replace by April that means it survived less than three months.
Yeah I think that was a pretty shortlived one if its the one I am thinking of. A long hallway with a big cylinder of rotating gears going down each side of the hallway.
Can’t remember at all what the other room looked like though.
I thought I’d seen something that sounds like that, like that, is this it ? ……..
This picture was on the New Babbage Cog page here ….
http://newbabbagecogarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2009_02_01_archive.html
And this page shows the original design for the flag …..
http://newbabbagecogarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/vol-i-issue-iii-28-february-2007.html
Here is the Cog page for the newer town hall being opened in April …..
http://newbabbagecogarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/11-april-2007.
At this point I don’t trust my memory on the interiors of each. I think the one in the sepia Cog pics above were of the “new” town hall. Shaun came to me to get pics for the Cog, and I think we had an article or blurb about the new one opening. (And I’m too lazy to go check the archives at the moment to see if that’s the case.)
I only keep remembering that there was another, short-lived City Hall before the glass one that has been posted before.
Edward, I have a set of aerial pics like the one I posted for every section of the sim at that time. I’ll try to stich them together to post.
This picture seems to show the part of the hall behind the camera in the pic of the cogs above, the floor looks the same and has a cut in it in the same as the other pic …..
The window textures seem to match the ones in the other outside picture above and the bay window resembles the one in the second picture. This is dated March 10 2007.
Here we go, just found these ….. Same room, different angles , taken on the same day …
There are those cogs in the background of the first pic too.
Anyone remember the name of the pale gentleman in the pinstripe suit? I recall he had a flying bird av that I found rather impressive at the time.
Hengst Whitfield? But he had more meat on his bones, as I recall? It’s probably not him.
I want to say Hax. I can’t remember both names.
Yes, Junie, I think it was something like that. I remember hanging out in front of the Willow Tea Room, maybe with Rachel Breaker.
Nux Chaplin would be my guess
That’s it!
Three letter name…contains an ‘x’…. *shrug*
Oh! Just realized I’m in the top pic! *bounce*
I’m the redhead in the back next to the guy in the stovepipe hat (whom I don’t remember).
I wish I still had that dress. ;-)
i rezzed in may, i can see that gear on the ground where the forced landing was, and i have a pretty strong memory of a green glass interior for the building, and the phantasmagoria across the lawn was there too.
The more i go through the New Babbage Flikr group, the more i cringe when I see that old gold and glass town hall, that thing just looked so out of place….
Awww, I really liked it, a single tower set in the park was a nice contrast. Like the city tried to make one bit clean and modernish (For the time period) even if the rest of the city was grimey and industrial and all brick etc.
Aw, I have such fond memories of being maimed in the elevator shaft, though! And it was so Golden Compassy looking. *grins, ducks*
I used to have the boiler from the building, I grabbed it after the Big Explosion Wot Cleared The Land. Lost in the 2010 Inventory Glitch.
Yeah funny about the Golden Compass look, that was very intentional :-)
I found this picture from November 2008 which appears to be the interior of the Golden Compassy tower.
I recognize the Baron as he still has that same outfit, but as for the rest I’ve no clue.
Skusting in the bowler hat. I recognise Mr. Jack’s feet to the far right. The neko in black in the middle (given the blog it came from) would be Dr. Malegato Alter in her human form. I think to thr right of the podium might be Kandance but I’m trying to make out ears.
Other than that the guy in the purple suit is familiar and pretty sure the woman in the blue hoop skirt owned a gallery but beyond that I got nothin’.
I was there, somewhere…
Squee! I believe I’m the one on the left in the green ensemble with my old coiffure! If not, I have that same gown & was a resident then…[mutters] damned doppelgangers!
this is a monthly town hall meeting, less than 2 months before the elections were declared. mayor shaunathan sprocket at the podium. i’m in the center back, i recognize the ao stand that i don’t use anymore. right of me might be trilobyte zanzibar, judging from bald head and cut of suit. the dark dress of the two women in front of him is probaly viv trafalgar, who would have stood with jed, beq, serafina, or storm thunders, so the man to the right of them is jasper kiergarten. blue skirt might be mara razor, by height and wig. right of blue skirt is kandace commons because of what is on her head. old woman on back right has to be cessida thetan, mr. jack’s gran. couple in center bottom is orchid macmillan and rip wirefly. green dress on left *might* be redgrrl llewelyn.
Christmas 2008.
things in background – very first Blakopal Designs store? (Wax Museum)
skull balloon over Elleon’s Steam Funk shop (Curious Seamstress residence).
airships over P. Irate (‘Cuffs) and the awesome Gaslights Emporium build
(Music Box Shop & Chav’s new store) on the Port Babbage front row.
Max Queller’s glass elevator (Mureaux Park & Thrice’s factory)
Pizzini Mayo’s Spiral Arcade (Otenth’s greenhouse)

ooooo look at it explode! Nice pic! Shaunathan mentioned to me it was Golden Compassy on purpose. That amused me.
So can we get an official count on city hall builds?
By my counting….
The one with the giant cogs in the long hall. Then the green windowed one at the top of this thread, then the Golden compass tower, then the current one ? I think I’m right in thinking the one with the cogs down two sides of a hall isn’t the first ? So 5 in all ?
I think the one with the giant cogs and the long hall was the first, the one with the smokestacks. (Edward?)
I vote for only 4. :-)
I remember one with cogs in the floor along the sides replacing an older one (maybe the one with green windows?) Were there maybe two versions that had cogs in the floor?
Also, really wish I had taken more pictures back then.
In this Babbage Cog page , it shows the same gears under the glass floor of the green windowed town hall ……
http://newbabbagecogarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/11-april-2007.html
Yeah I’m going with 4 including the current one as well. The pic of the long row of cogs jogs memories. They went into the floor and there was supposed to be a giant Babbage Engine under the Town Hall. I think the first and second Town Halls used the same wall texture which is why my memory gets fuzzy (and that both only lasted a few months each).
I also remember city hall meetings outside :) ..
then they were so rare . i have some 2008 photos as well smiles :) ‘arrival of Wheatstone ..
gosh .. I remember meeting Eggy the first time in front of the comming soon University Sign .. Must find those Photos :) It was early am before work for me .. we used to log in for a coffee .. she was just getting home from work .. smiles .. Miss Eggy and her own darling Tea Room .. I just remember a time we used to all chat more .. visit .. and laugh together .. a different time in Babbage .. we made and found time to just laugh :) ..
But most of my early days were spent in the canals , Sea and Port smile ..
the Palisades had just arrived back then ..
** Mark Twain Study is well and still visited often :) .. A most special honey spot for many ..
Amber thank you for taking the time to share these gems of finds :)
Eggy’s tea room was wonderful! That was my first point of reference in the city – if I were lost, I’d rush back there (had a landmark) have some tea, get my bearings and go exploring again.
Hey Breezy! Remember this?
Another source for intrepid history and photo hunters may be back issues of The Primgraph. While it doesn’t go back as far as some of the pics you are finding, it might yield up other bits and pieces. I do know that Tiny Tin is featured on one cover. Issue 5, I was pleased to feature the Mark Twain Study. Issue 6 featured New Babbage as the Sim of the Month (I know, I wrote the piece!), a very silly interview with the Clockwinder by a Miss Poppy Ratzzi (grin),and a story by Cleanslate titled “Tenk’s Clock”. Plus other articles about the people and the businesses of New Babbage, as they existed in June of 2009.
Issue 7 had coverage of the rise of Obolenskidonia. :) As memory serves, there’s something for Babbagers in nearly every issue.
Overall, The Primgraph highly favored New Babbage. Worth a browse. There were 16 issues published, up until it’s retirement in April 2011. All are at calameo.com, search by “Primgraph”.

Late 2008, Babbage Canals. The fire and demise of Vertically Challenged. This is the lot where Steamweaver’s shipyard sits now.

Here’s the oldest one I could find on my drive. Old Navy Pier pavili0n (Portside Books),
Pizzini Mayo’s Spiral Arcade with the ever present circling air squid (Melnik Tower & Otenth’s greenhouse), Terry
Lightfoot’s To A T (unchanged), Nix Sand’s rebuilt Excentricity shop (Curious Seamstress ), and I think that was Moses Mureaux’s consignment shop on the far corner.
[img_assist|nid=5828|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=640|height=385]
Jimmy, Myrtil, and some of the old urchin
crew hanging out on the seawall.
Gemini Enfield and I believe Loki (standing) to my right. On the end I don’t know, maybe Jeremy Ondricek. Shay McDowwl is to Myrtil’s left.
hey Jimmy, you wouldn’t happen to have a copy of a picture of the Paleolithic Museum Annex would you?
Dunno. I’ll look tonight. I have stuff on other computers.
I hope to get unlazy soon and post stuff to flicker. I don’t have a lot, but some interesting stuff.
I think that’s Tenk standing.
Mmm, the hair didn’t photograph, and I thought standing behind the wall.
it’s tenk standing.
My first build in the newly raised Wheatstone … dear Miss Breezy helped me to select it!
See this picture & more early New Babbage pics from my blog post Aug 2008 – Exploring New Babbage
Cheers!
Oh! I do remember that bouncy thing! Whose was that? What was it called? I’ve totally forgotten, but it was great fun. :-)
Wracking my head to recall the name of the bouncy thing. I LOVED it. It was interactive, you had to pull levers and ride a lift to get started. That was one of the first machines I figured out how to play with in SL.
(also, Tenk mentioned up the thread somewhere about BlakOpal’s first store. I think one could make a case for Her Dark Materials being their first store. I remember an ornate Victorian Christmas tree being set out for sale, BlakOpal was quite proud of it. I bought one. That, and perhaps a few other items, were for sale in HDM in 2008.)
mr greggan’s phun phactory?
Mr Greggan’s Cavorite Repulsion
One thing I’ve been trying to find pictures of but without alot of luck is the bridge/pier that went from tiny tim to the south edge of vernian sea. I found two that show a bit of it on his arm but nothing else……. help ! ;P
Thanks for all the comments and new pics .. well, old pics, you know what I mean hehe.
I have been trying to find one of thatwierd wireframe tree thing that was where the steam punk hotel. I think it was mr greggan’s.

June 2008
This heah is just wonderful for me to see, but also makes me a tad meloncholy. I rezzed in September 2007, but wasted two years wandering the silly lands before I saw that New Babbage kiosk in New Caledon.
